  1. Clearly the Twins are out-performing expectations, but I have to think projections will be less accurate when trying to predict the collective outcome of say 45 players as opposed to 35. In other words, the Twins have had and will have lots of turnover, and with more players suiting up, there are going to be more variables available to mess up any predictions.
  2. Dozier's deal will be about over by the time a 2015 draft pick comes up for the Twins. I could buy into the idea of not drafting a SS if you already had a young elite SS already performing at the MLB level. However as much as I like Santana, he's nowhere close to a promised solution. I'd hesitate if the Twins had a young Tulowitzki, A-Rod or Jeter type. Santana is nowhere near that, neither is Gordon or Polanco. And again, Plouffe's deal will be about over by the time a 2015 draft pick comes up, and while I'm a believer in Sano sticking at 3B, I'm not putting ALL my eggs in that basket. I'm not really a BPA guy for the MLB draft, mainly because I think it's pretty impossible to make that determination between pitchers and batters as those guys have absolutely no usefull skillsets to compare, but if a SS is what appears to be the best elite talent, hell ya, take him. That being said, I don't think that about Bergman.
  3. The Twins would have to eat his contract. Anyone who picked him up after he cleared waivers and refused an assignment would mearly have to pay him the pro rated league minimum salary for the rest of the season. I'm happy Milone is pitching well in AAA, maybe it will fool another club who needs a starter. It's not fooling me though and I hope it's not fooling the front office either. There are plenty of things Milone will be able to accomplish in AAA that he cannot at the MLB level. Making terrible Tiger farmhands swing and miss at an 85 MPH fastball seems to be one of them.
  4. I'm sure most folks here agree. My hypothetical is supposing what the front office will do. I don't think they make room for him if all the current roadblocks are playing well (and winning).
  5. If Hunter continues to hit, and whatever combinaiton of Hicks/Arcia/Vargas/Rosario show that they belong, then what? In the hypothetical situation where injuries and production are not an issue for Hunter and the kids, does the club promote Buxton even if he's tearing it up in the minors?
  6. I would think there is going to be some regression, but the AL Central offenses aren't very impressive. Chicago and Cleveland have issues and KC is playing over their head. A team BB% of 5.7% is second worst in baseball along with their team BABIP of .322 kind of implies they are due for regression as well. I'd guess the Twins pitching will start looking like we expect them to, but the results might be different simply because the competition isn't great. Oh, but the strikeouts are still a huge problem.
  7. Both have some exciting aspects but both are long shots, Walker in particular. It's been four years now and his approach at the plate isn't improving. We can all drool over his power and pretend it doesn't matter if he can't get on base, but it does. The Twins will never put this guy in a MLB uniform except for a token call up if he doesn't miraculously change. He simply isn't going to be given a chance to prove anyone right or wrong, which sucks, but is life for minor leaguers who refuse to take pitches off the plate. Most teams will eventually give a shot to a guy like Harrison if he continually shows nice contact skills, even if his power is underwhelming.
  8. Of course no team could dare cut the anthem now. I can only imagine the radioactive hate cloud that would rain down upon a club from certain news outlets.
  9. WAR punishes first basemen as it is.
  10. If ISIS has a nice SS prospect, I might be OK if they send a scout or two. If fewer players standing for the national anthem is any indication of a more successful international approach, sign me up.
  11. During a rebuild. If they ever get back to that 2002-2010 level of competitiveness, then it's time to think about bad contracts to aging players that may help the short term goal of winning a champioinship. It's like Ryan has had it backward his entire career. When the Twins were bad in the mid to late 90's, Ryan signed a bunch mid-budget aging vets to a terrible team that was going nowhere. Then they got good in the 2000's, they made a few trades, but never signed any of those kinds of free agents to push them over the hump. Now they're bad again so it's back to the mid-budget aging vets.
  12. Yeah, it sucks, it's hard to get a young free agent, but I'm done with multi-year deals for aging vets until this team is to the point where they are only a player or two away from competing for a championship. More and more this game is being dominated by young players. Only five of the top 20 hitters by WAR were over 30 last year and only three of the top 20 pitchers. The steriod era saw players playing good ball late into their career, a decrease in HR isn't the only thing that's being affected by the new PED policies.
  13. I think the flak the Astros got was mostly trying to lowball the #1 overall pick by inventing an injury even though they had the money to sign him. Of course the Astros may have actually been right and we all formed a lynch mob to hang an innocent club. I'd say the Twins picking a player they may not be able to sign would be more like the Pirates drafting Mark Appel three years ago. I don't think anyone is holding that against Pittsburgh. It wouldn't be like the Twins refused to give Rodgers the money, simply their draft pool wouldn't allow for it if in the end the player's demands were impossible to meet. After all, he's not going to go undrafted, someone after pick seven will take a shot at him somewhere in the draft, even if his predraft demands will make it next to impossible for him to get signed. That being said, no way the Twins punt, this is quite possibly the most risk averse club in the league.
  14. 100% agree. No more 30+ year olds on multi year deals.
  15. My beef was that for some reason the team thought they had to have a significant number of vets on the team even though the franchise's past success came when they had lots of young players. I never had doubts that Hunter would be an upgrade offensively to Willingham/Parmelee/Colabello. Well except for the first couple weeks of the season.
  16. I don't think so, but really to little fault of Gardy. Something intagible seems to happen with managerial changes. Buck Schowalter, Terry Francona and Bob Melvin are recent examples of a new manager walking into a pretty similar situation to the previous manager and coming out with better results. "Energy", "momentum" and "urgency" often are words that tend to get thrown around and quite often sound silly as they are basically empty euphamisms, but some kind of change certainly seems to happen that is not exactly conceptual or describle.
  17. I like Funkhouser but I'd guess he may remind the Twins of Alex Meyers who clearly they are frustrated with. Of course assuming all power arms are too frustrating to deal with is a good way to ensure your rotation continues to be futilely incompetent when it comes to striking out the opponent.
  18. Eddie Numez might disagree, not only is he hurt, he's about to lose his job.
  19. TV. Funny how Potsie was the punchline instead of Ralph, Potsie was better looking. It's hard to remember but there actually was a time where being an idiot was worse than being ugly. I'm looking at you reality TV.
  20. Are you saying WAR is embarrassed to be mentioned in the same sentence as Suzuki?
  21. I just don't think Lucroy is a top player, certainly not top 20. I also find it highly likely his best years are behind him. These are the kinds of moves Ryan should have been considering last decade when the team was close but a player or two short of having a real shot. I don't like the move when your team still is this unsettled.
  22. I think this all hinges on the front office's historically loose definitions of the words "outfielders" and "starters".
  23. To the point of signing Hunter simply to tease the sentimentality of fans, my wife (who never pays attention to baseball) had to put up with me listening to the game in a long car ride yesterday. I believe Hunter's name was mentioned as he was on deck, which caught her attnetion. She said she was glad Hunter was back because she doesn't know any other Twins these days except for Mauer. I told her the team likely signed him to hook casual fans such as herself. She told me, she didn't care about their motives, she liked it just the same and it was no different than Target raising money and awareness for some cause. SureTarget's motives were to make themselves more money by pretending that they are philenthropic, but the cause ends up making tons of money anyway. I told her that I was just happy she was paying attention to baseball, even if Hunter wasn't the same player she remembered. Two seconds later he hits a 3 run HR and she tells me to stop being so negative.
  24. I agree, though there weren't a lot of OF available. It was basically Hunter, Rios and Rasmus unless you wanted to give out a longer term deal to Melky Cabrera, which I would have liked even less. Of the other three, I would have preferred Rios, Rasmus and Hunter in that order, but on a one year deal, I really cared very little. One year deals rarely bother me when most of us were predicting more losing. Not sure what all the fuss was about.
