  1. I don't remember people ripping Trevor May for his baseball work ethic due to his music career: Or his interests in journalism: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/09/mlbtr-mailbag-with-guest-host-trevor-may.html Remember the gall that Alex Meyer had to be a substitute teacher? Man, had he give that up sooner his control probably would be better: https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/twins/2013/12/25/alex-meyer-minnesota-pitching-prospect-teacher-offseason/4199115/ I'm ashamed to say that I type all this while sitting at work. I know I'm the only one here who is tickling his baseball interests while I have another occupation to focus on.
  2. I don't remember that David Lynch movie.
  3. I know many don't agree, but I find this all very exciting. Back in the day I could have recited every member of the 3000 hit club, the 500 HR club and the 300 win club and rank them in order; I have always loved the history of baseball. But change isn't good or bad, it's just inevitable and I'm thrilled that the Twins are now emphatically and without reluctance jumping on board with the game's evolutions. The next step is to not just get on board but be pioneers of whatever is coming next. You don't have to like the team's on field moves to appreciate the behind the scenes progress this organization is seeing.
  4. I don't know how much longer Kepler can continue to not hit lefites before his value goes to that of your garden variety platoon corner player, which is typically next to nothing. If TB wants to give something good to take that chance, I'm more than willing.
  5. Glen Perkins, Monday Feb 19th. Joining Hunter, Hawkins, Cuddyer and Morneau in some kind of vague front office capacity.
  6. The next generation just has to be willing to learn more skills. I'm guessing even in today's poor educational climate, plenty of people who's jobs are becoming extinct have opportunities to learn new skills but refuse to do it. I'd have to imagine there are even going to be plenty of new jobs created by today's innovation which will be obsolete, and just like our rapidly changing technology, they are going to become obsolete at quicker and quicker rates. People just have to understand that there is just going to be fewer and fewer jobs where you learn one trade and call it a career as has long been a workingman's tradition. That obviously isn't going to sit well with folks who resist change kicking and screaming. And yes, the government should be funding the education to keep the population up to speed.
  7. I want to spend the money on pitching. But I don't want to spend it on just any pitching it has to be a difference maker(s). If using that money on an ace is not going to happen, I could get behind getting a big bat. It's not doing anyone any good not being spent. It's starting to look more like this team is going to have to go back to the drawing board to find the arm(s) they need. Developing their own or trading for a young arm isn't going to cost much money. If they do spend on pitching, I don't want to waste it on more mid-rotation types. Top of the rotation only.
  8. I thought he was talking about Kyle Schwarber who can't play any position. Rooker's going to play RF or 1B, it's not like either are demanding positions. His ascension would/should have no relation to his defense.
  9. That #1 in the title of this thread looks a little crooked, it could almost be viewed as a #7. Want me to edit that for you Seth? Rooooookerrrrrr!!!!!!
  10. The whistle blower is a covicted liar. On the other hand he's blowing the whistle on an agency that has long been targeting young impoverished Dominican kids desperate for a better life. So I guess all this means is both parties are likely despicable and no one wins.
  11. It seems to me what the teams typically want are MLB ready players while the fans and prospect wonks want the unknown players, particularly teams that don't want to rebuild so much as try to stay relevant. Guys with MLB experience, even with their warts, tend to carry more value than we anticipate.
  12. But if you get an actual #1 than that fixes the hole at the top and beefs up the bottom by pushing Santana/Berrios/Gibson/et al down. I don't know why finding a #5 for the short term would be a priority over finding a #1 for any length of time.
  13. I can predict that if the WC game is Chris Sale or Corey Kluber or Justin Verlander or Luis Severino vs Colin McHugh, that the Twins are once again going to find themselves as gigantic underdogs.
  14. I'd rather have a team that's capable of winning it all but could miss the post season than a team that will make the post season but isn't capable of winning it all. There's no rule that the Twins have to go into the playoffs as the plucky, try-hard underdogs. That chip-chair-and-a-chance bit is so damn old and those long odds have yet to pay out for the Twins. This organization has to stop this business of hoping for the best. They need to PLAN for the best. Don't rely on luck and good fortune, make it yourself by stacking the odds in your favor.
  15. But he doesn't make them better where they actually need to improve. The Twins already have middle of the rotation arms. Their deficiency is the top of the rotation. If they have a hole they need to fill at shortstop it's not going to get filled by signing a third baseman even if he makes the team better.
  16. He only got a minor league deal though and the Twins don't currently have a 3rd catcher. I'd think re-upping him would have been just fine even had he not swung Darvish in their favor. But possibly swinging Darvish in their favor would have definitely been a reason to do it.
  17. I agree and have refuted those that said we know the Twins offer and that they lowballed Darvish, we don't know. But Lavine was quoted in Berardino's piece basically saying they would not offer the opt out and Berardino implied that the Twins would not offer 6 years. I don't care how Lynn, Cobb or Arrieta pitch in the next six years. I don't even care how they pitch this summer. Find me the pitchers who can legitimately square off against the best pitchers the AL has to offer come October. It ain't those other guys.
  18. I just don't understand how Lynn, Cobb, McHugh or Odorizzi get this team a WS trophy. This team can't get to the top until they figure out the very top of the rotation. Pass on these guys, the middle of the rotation isn't an issue. Save the prospects and the money, maybe the team could walk into a Justin Verlander situation again mid-season. This team has to figure out who's going up against Chris Sale or Corey Kluber in game 163. That should be the only goal right now.
  19. He's a starter, and a decent one at that, I think he'll cost more than expected. But I also don't think taking Houston's number six starter and making him the Twins number two starter is a great way to surpass Houston.
  20. Well I guess my problem is that I'm not OK with a repeat of 2017. I've waited long enough for a World Series title and those pitchers almost surely aren't good enough to get to the ALCS let along win it all.
  21. Excuses? There's no excuses. Argue that the Twins should have offered the opt out. Argue that the Twins should have gone to six years. Argue that the Twins should have enticed him with Giminez or Napoli. Don't argue that the Twins are "cheap" or that it's about money. Those are guesses and it's counter productive. Why? We don't need to fall back on that old crutch that the Twins won't spend money. There are legit factual reasons to disagree with the team staring us in the face. Why take the easy argument which has zero substance? It's doing the real arguments disservice.
  22. There so no evidence that the Twins offered above or below 110M. So why are people arguing as fact the Twins lowballed? We know they would not add the opt out. We are reasonably confident they wouldn't go six years. We know they didn't resign Giminez who may have been a key recruiter. There are other arguments to make, people pretending it's a fact that the Twins offered peanuts are only helping to undermine actual valid arguments.
  23. Look, I'm upset/angry/disappointed that the Twins aren't going to be getting the one pitcher available that would most likely provide a reasonable chance at winning game 163, but I'm also upset/angry/disappointed by everyone trying to assume the Twins offer was 5/100 or whatnot. We don't know; saying the Twins lowballed is a terrible argument because we have no freakin' idea. I get it, it's frustrating and it's hard to justify our stance without using hyperbole and unsubstantiated assumptions. However I hope everyone can stop pretending that they do know what the Twins offered long enough to come up with better arguments.
  24. https://www.twincities.com/2018/02/10/whats-next-for-twins-after-falling-short-in-yu-darvish-derby/ Berardino's piece regarding missing on Darvish. The quote that I don't like: “By definition doesn’t a player stay with you if he’s performing at a value less than what you’re paying him and he’ll walk if he’s performing at a value above it?” Levine said. “So I don’t know where the benefit is to the club. It seems to me very, very advantageous to the player and would have to take something unique in a negotiation to feel like that’s the right move.” The benefit to the club is that you got the player you wanted. I was really hoping with the new regime we were over the idea that the team had to "win" every trade and free agent signing.
  25. But they've always known that they'd have to pay more than the glitzy teams to get the same player. So why make a spectacle all off season if they werent planning on making the significantly best offer?
