  1. ****Moderator Note**** Most of you know the rules, if you're new here, please read them. http://twinsdaily.com/topic/8228-twins-daily-comment-policy/ In short: -Discussing moderator policy always derails a thread and is not allowed. -Respect for everyone is required. That means both players and other posters. -Do not call out others' violations in the thread. Hit the report button instead. ** Anyone who plans on discussing this further can take it to the Questions About Minncentric forum. Further discussion here is going to result in enough points to get a time-out. Let's stay on topic.
  2. You can't put Lynn in the minors, he's long out of options I'm sure. His track record also shows a troubling over-reliance on fastballs and issues with conditioning. Those are issues that are as concerning as his control and likely part of the contributing factors for his lack of it. He needs a full off-season with a club and he needs to dramatically change his approach and his repertoire. The Twins are just throwing away starts if they think what ails Lance Lynn can be fixed on the fly mid-season. He should move to the pen, that's going to be his final destination anyway, just as everyone was saying from the day he was called up his rookie year.
  3. e] You're not the only one, I'm skeptical. But he's going to get his shot, might as well be now before Santana gets back seeing as the only other option is Slegers.
  4. If the starter gets yanked after 3 and Hughes can't be trusted to go directly in and be the long man, why is he still on the team? Hughes needs to be DFA'd, Lynn needs to be the long man and Gonsalves should get his look.
  5. It was only meant to cause a riot here. ***Moderator note*** Let's keep this discussion on topic. That means not derailing this thread with arguments about how good Brian Dozier is or is not and it also means not trolling the board with clearly intentional derailment bait.
  6. Good point in the highlighted portion. If it was me though, I think I'd rather have Garver than Russell Martin, Mike Zunino or Yan Gomes, and I'd certainly rather have him starting over the messes Boston and Anaheim have found themselves in. At least there is a hint of potential with Garver that is pretty much missing from every catcher on a contending AL team outside of Gary Sanchez.
  7. To me the problem with getting Realmuto is that Boston, Cleveland, Anaheim, Seattle and Toronto also have replacement level catchers and should/would be trying to get him also. And knowing Houston, they'll go after any good ballplayer even if there is of a less clear need. Those are the teams the Twins have to get past in the standings.
  8. As far as a RH bat goes, I'd think if he can play OF or 3B they could easily find at bats for everyone by rotating Kepler to 1B once in awhile and everyone getting DH days. The person most affected would be Morrison, which doesn't bother me terribly. Also, I'm still a Buxton fan but I'm not opposed to a AAA re-calibration. As for Realmuto, just as with all my trade thoughts, Gonsalves is on the top of my list of expendables. I'm on an island on this one but I'm skeptical of him panning out. I'd listen on the rest of the package, though wouldn't let go of Lewis.
  9. If they can get Realmuto without getting fleeced I'm on board. If not my focus wouldn't change; my priorities would be back of the bullpen, RH power bat - position be damned, with front of the rotation ace being on my list of fantasies I'll never see in my lifetime. I just don't think the difference between 95% of catchers is much more than negligible these days.
  10. I don't know, I think people are putting more expectations on today's catchers than they probably deserve. Sure, Realmuto is a good catcher and a clear upgrade, but he's one of about a half dozen catchers league-wide you could say that about. If you don't have or can't get one of them, I'm not going to stress out over the position. I mean aside from the Yankees, the other AL playoff contenders are rolling with likes of Martin Maldonado, Yan Gomes, Brian McCann, Christian Vazquez, Russell Martin, Mike Zunino and Jon Lucroy. Unless the year is 2014, I don't see anyone there that's significantly better than replacement level. It's just a black hole of a position these days, most of the time the best hitters are moved from catcher long before they reach the majors. Having an injured catcher these days evokes sympathy from me for the injured player, but an "Eh" in terms of impacting the team.
  11. I'd be interested in Realmuto but might say no after seeing the demands. I'm Ok with Garver getting a shot every day; as much flack as he's gotten for his defense, the pitchers have been better since he's taken over. He might not be the reason for the turn around, but thus far any deficiencies haven't appeared to be a significant factor. If not Realmuto and if the team absolutely has to have a known commodity, maybe Wellington Castillo? Surely the White Sox are ready to sell.
  12. Is it one thing particular about Swihart? There's some pedigree with him being a former top prospect but looking at his MiLB numbers, they actually aren't any better than Bobby Wilson's. It does look like most of Swihart's excitement may have been the old trumped up East Coast prospect hype machine. I could go either way (though would prefer neither), I'm just wondering if there is something to still like about Swihart or if we're just talking about getting Wilson out of here.
  13. I've seen this one before in 2003. The team had a bunch of pretty good young hitters who just didn't seem to be syncing up their productivity. They traded for a veteran outfielder in Shannon Stewart who was a good-not-great player but who brought a name-brand excitement to the clubhouse which sparked the team the rest of the year. I'd see about trying to get Adam Jones. He's not the OBP machine Stewart was but he's a name-brand vet that would get young guys excited. And he's right handed and can play CF. This team really needs a RH bat.
  14. I'd rather have Garver playing every day. If it's simply to replace Wilson, sure I guess I don't much care. Though with Swihart's lack of catching duties as of late, I'd guess that means he's a pretty poor defender?
  15. Don't all teams have Dominican academies these days? Why doesn't every team have a resident physician at these academies and everyone in the organization who winters in the DR and the minor leaguers who still live there are told by the teams that the team physician and ONLY the team physician can give them supplements, medicine and what not? Robinson Cano will be paid about 12M during these 80 games he misses. Seems like it would have been cheaper to have one doc on retainer.
  16. McKay's lack of velocity kept me from wanting him as the top pick. Thinking about the Twins taking a guy #1 overall who throws 92 MPH seemed like a stereotypical "play it safe" Twins move. I don't think his bat is going to be anything better than an extra-innings emergency pinch-hitter considering he plays the offensive dependent 1st base, but maybe his arm is more live than his college velocity let on. We'll probably know more once he faces better competition.
  17. He shouldn't have had to mention why. This isn't a video game, Javier is a living breathing actual human being facing a less than certain surgery that has a 9 month recovery time and he will be physically incapacitated for a long length of time. If an 18-year-old wants to see if rest and recovery will work first, it's his right, and it was probably the best decision for him.
  18. Another great lesson Heezy, thanks for sharing your expertise!
  19. He's still only throwing 89? I thought he regained his velocity after last year's DFA. If not, sadly I change my vote: time to say goodbye.
  20. Pretty good career for a guy drafted in the 29th round. I'm still waiting for Zach Ward to develop though.
  21. I hope someone explains this one. He wasn't on the 40-man and Rogers, Duke and Moya have been anything but consistent this year. They DFA'd him last year to our surprise but managed to get him back. It looked like it might be a shrewd gamble to clear a roster spot at the time, but out right releasing him when it wasn't necessary makes it look like they really don't care for him. I'd have to think there's off field issues or personality clashes. Even if his stuff isn't what we were hoping it would be, his stuff and numbers aren't worse than Dietrich Enns.
  22. I feel bad that this piece was largely missed until Fangraphs brought it to life for us. Very well done Teflon. I wonder how same handed batters are fairing against same handed pitching these days compared to decades past? I don't have any stats in front of me, but could it be that young lefties are better at hitting against left handed pitching in today's game? Making the need to switch-hit less impactful?
  23. Barring several injuries I don't see May in the rotation this year. Not only is he rusty, but they're going to want to manage his innings which is easier to do in AAA or in the MLB bullpen. But the guy can carry good velocity throughout his starts and has four pitches he can and does throw at any time, his profile is what the team has just turned Kyle Gibson into, what Jose Berrios is supposed to be and pretty much what every starter in Cleveland has been for the past half decade. I'd be pretty surprised if the team doesn't intent for him to resume being a starter any later than next spring.
  24. So Twitter for Trevor May = Bad? Twins Daily for you = Acceptable?
  25. Dang, I would have hoped that labrum surgery on a non-throwing arm would not require such a long recovery. I feel bad for the young man.
