  1. I think bringing him back allows for too much of a comfort situation. A vet that the team knows well will get too much leash. Busenitz, Moya and Curtis got no leash. I'd much rather have those guys up plus Reed and Bard.
  2. If he can do this for a couple of more starts hopefully it makes the powers-that-be much less reluctant to make tough calls on poorly performing vets. It would be nice to get Gonsalves a start in Lynn's place prior to Santana coming back. It would be a lot easier to go with three youngsters in Berrios, Romero and Gonsalves if they've all had a look at the majors. It's going to be hard for him to get his foot in the door when Santana, Lynn, Gibson and Odorizzi are all fighting for three spots.
  3. No matter how this turns out, I'm still happy to see 95-97 from the starter in the 5th inning.
  4. I don't want to set unreasonably high expectations as far as a timeline goes. On the other hand I also don't want to hear people saying it can't be done or the team is smart not to do it when other teams are promoting their 19 or 20-year-old top prospects.
  5. If Polanco or Gordon are destined to be the starting SS here the next couple of years, I'm all aboard the Escobar extension train. The future of Dozier and Sano are murky and he's an excellent safety net. He's versatile enough and still likely cheap enough that extending him in no way would preclude the team from also addressing 2nd or 3rd later should better options appear.
  6. He must be pacing himself. Only reasonI can think of that he's tossing 89MPH heaters up there.
  7. It's usually both at the same time though.
  8. Fine, I'll ask my boss about using some PTO tomorrow since everyone is so insistent.
  9. I'm under contract with another organization, sorry.
  10. Why not then put him to use in the first half then demote him should he struggle in the second?
  11. Geez so cynical, it's not like he's going to start! We've got a 28-year-old SS with a career .638 OPS ready to make an impact.
  12. I'm just fine letting him go as deep into a game as his production allows. That just doesn't seem to happen with young guys too often; Molitor, like many mangers tend to pull rookies instead of letting them try to work out of jams, especially if their jobs may be on the line as well. And if Molitor needed more incentive to routinely yank him after five innings, didn't we already hear someone from the front office talk this spring about managing Romero's workload? Although, going five innings would still be an improvement.
  13. I'm excited to see Romero and endorse the move, but is he going to help the short-start situation? Isn't he the one prospect who's innings and pitch counts are most closely going to be monitored?
  14. Yeah, not a good sign when the only offered solution is "reestablish his prior levels of horizontal movement". I don't think he's getting that movement back. I think he has to scale back on the four-seamer and the sinker and bump up his previously little used slider and offspeed pitch. An offspeed pitch which has been so underwhelming that Fangraphs and Brooks Baseball can't agree if it's actually a curveball or not.
  15. I never wanted Duffey up to begin with but I don't think it's fair to rip him unless Souhan has more information that he simply has not provided. "Tyler Duffey slammed his way around the clubhouse, upset about being sent back to the minors. Sounds like conjecture to me. How does he know Duffey wasn't upset with himself for pitching so poorly? It seems quite possible, but of course it doesn't provide for as good of a punchline.
  16. Oh no, Duffy has a change up, but it's terrible and he probably should stop throwing it.
  17. Well if we're going to watch futility, they might as well make it historic.
