  1. I don't know. There are a total of 12 qualified position players 33 or older with a WAR > 0.0 right now; only seven with a WAR > 1.0. Five of those seven are Nick Markakis, Jed Lowrie, Brett Gardner, Shin-Soo Choo and Matt Kemp. Four players who their teams long ago regretted signing. 30+-year-old vets have not been fairing as well in the post steroid era. Selfishly, I'm all for cycling them out.
  2. Another HS arm in round 16, Anthony Tuionetoa. Probably sign-ability issues but I do like HS kids! Um, er, that didn't come out right.
  3. You mean like on the analyitics team? I think I'd keep him at shortstop. I think he should be called up to the majors though.
  4. Ugh, already dropping the Willie? It's Willie Joe and it better stay that way.
  5. It's hard to put into words how much I like having a guy named Willie Joe in our system. Already one of my favorite prospects!
  6. Wow, the Twins don't even have the worst catcher on the field today. At least in terms of OPS.
  7. I like the HS shortstop, after that, the guys taken after round 1 don't really excite me. However, at this point, no one specific player drafted should be expected to ever make the big leagues, so I guess doubling down on specific skill sets probably doesn't hurt.
  8. It's after round 10 because teams don't lose their slot bonus should those players not sign. And it seems like guys who are in the top 100 or so never sign. Not that I don't hope they don't take other HS kids. I guess I could rephrase my prior post, we can probably wish that the Twins draft some of those high ranked HS kids, but probably shouldn't expect them to sign at this point.
  9. Well they took more college arms than I would have wanted, but any KC fans complaining after seeing what they did with their first two picks are probably just those folks who complain about anything.
  10. There hasn't been a HS kid taken from MLB's top 100 since round 4. I'm guessing we can start crossing all of those off the wish list. We're probably not far from being able to cross off all the HS kids still in the top 200.
  11. Big bat HS middle infielders; I'm in favor of those. I'm guessing the team is saving money with the other picks.
  12. Outfield depth might have been the key to the Twins sustained run early this century. Hunter anchored CF, but they had prospects ranging from elite to pretty dang good in Cuddyer, Jones, Garbe, Kubel, Rabe, Restovich, Ryan, Kielty, Ford, Buchanon and Mohr. They flipped some for need (SS Jason Bartlet, lead off hitter Shannon Stewart) but probably could have swung more deals had they wanted to.
  13. I thought your reference to "type" was aimed at the type of hitters they were selecting.
  14. The really good ones, but there tend to only be a couple of those a year in the whole league. There's rarely much difference between the 7th best catcher and the 27th best.
  15. It looks like they like they want to get the best bats and position isn't given heavy consideration. That's my position as well.
  16. Ugh catcher, baseball's equvilant to a kicker. At least he can hit I guess.
  17. Maybe not, but I'm thinking the local sample might be tainting your opinion. If we were in St. Louis we'd probably think otherwise. Looking at the board for the Twins, Blaine Knight is my choice.
  18. So both Florida pitchers fell and KC gets them both? Is that a coincidence or was it gamesmanship?
  19. I would have liked pitching but there didn't seem to be any truly high upside guys there that didn't look like they were most likely destined for the pen. Looks like this was the best bat available, Im fine with that.
  20. Well, if someone were to offer me 7.5M for the rights to something I don't even own yet, I'd probably do it too. It probably wouldn't matter how much money I already had. But I'd do it knowing that the fans over at Twins Daily and Fangraphs who dedicate more of their time to baseball than typical fans do were going to call me out on it and rightfully so. I find by jiminy's postulation a few pages back quite plausible. Falvey wanted to free up Hughes' roster spot and the Jim Pohlad let them cut bait but only on the condition that if another team was willing to take on some of the salary then they'd agree to that deal.
  21. It could also be that 2019 was the only year San Diego was willing to fork over some cash towards his paycheck. $7.5M seems like an overpay for the draft pick, but I'd be thrilled if my team was willing to pay for draft picks. The Twins payroll is right now 124M. If it's not at least 131M next year I don't think any spin can hide the fact that this move in no way was intended to make the team on the field better. And it's not getting to 131M unless they sign Machado or Harper; probably need both to surpass that number.
  22. Only two, but I agree. If anything, the Twins did go BPA in 2009, Kyle Gibson falling due to a relatively minor injury was all the talk. There was more talk about Gibson than there was about Trout at that time. If anything, I'd think picking a toolsy HS outfielder in Aaron Hicks the year prior would have been a more likely reason for passing on another the following year. But, that's not too likely either. I'd bet if we could go back and look when the Twins were on the clock, way more mock drafts had Kyle Gibson sitting as BPA than they did Mike Trout. Seems to me, the other guy who was seen as a BPA but was sliding was James Paxton who fell due to sign-ability issues. Which were proven right since he opted not to sign.
  23. ****Moderator Note**** - The previous title was framed as clickbait, I have changed it. Additionally, if a bunch of adults can't discuss this without finger pointing, getting upset, hyperbole and making implications about each other, we won't be discussing it at all.
  24. Wow, you know the Twins are winning when we get spammed and a half hour goes by with no one noticing!
  25. If the front office wasn't looking at 2018 being our year, they sure made a show of pretending they did. I think this team is close, but ONLY if Romero and Berrios are actually the real deal. They need to be on the level of Kluber, Verlander, Price, Severino. If not, then they still have plenty of work to do. And offensively? Oof, that's tough. This team has a lot of promising young bats, some might be the answer, but nearly to a man they are awful at getting on base. If most of them are OBP blackholes, yeah, they might have to scrap most of the parts and try again. Too many of these guys are probably good individually but less so as a cohesive unit.
