  1. That debacle could have been prevented had the GM been paying attention to strikeout numbers. While missing bats wasn't very important to the last regime, it appears to be for this one.
  2. Yeah, things are actually lining up to put my guy Cody Stashak as a possiblity for a promotion right from AA! Not that I'm excited that the Rochester crowd isn't looking great, I just believe that Stashak is going to eventually show that he's been really overlooked for a couple of years now.
  3. Yeah certainly exceptions. After two years of this he doesn’t look to be one of them though.
  4. I’d think guys who already got paid are much less likely to revamp their mechanics and approach than guys who are much less certain of their job security. I’d think most pitching coaches, not just Johnson, have more impact on young guys and desperate journeymen. If you’re Soria, Robertson, Familia or Allen why would you change what got you there?
  5. Yeah, I’m not a believer in gimmick pitchers. Hildenberger is far from the only sidearmer to see this happen. Moya’s herky jerky delivery doesn’t work anymore, if it ever did. Duffey’s arsenal of magic curves got figured out quickly and just about every knuckleballer has about a year and a half shelf life tops.
  6. I’ve seen the complaining, but while those maybies are proving everyone wrong, maybe we shouldn’t. I wanted them to sign no less than three big name free agent relievers this year and every one of them have been brutal. I don’t see how the preferred alternative would have made anyone happy.
  7. It's kind of hard to be upset about 7 of the 8 BP spots at the moment. Rogers, May, Parker, Harper, Magill, Duffey and Morin have done nothing to really complain about. Way better than anyone could have expected. I'm OK with upgrades, but it's not like any of these guys are hurting the team in any way. Hildenberger on the other hand, wow. Why do they keep riding this train?
  8. Compared to the 2018 team, the 2019 Twins also look like a roster that can better absorb a high strikeout bat. Not only are many of the biggest offenders last year either gone or marginalized, but nearly to a man, everyone on the team is striking out less this year. Maybe some of that will rub off on Sano as well. Oddly, Nelson Cruz seems to be the only batter that is striking out more this year.
  9. I actually was never on the fence, I always wanted him. I am on the fence now though, by this point I have next to no faith that he wouldn't be completely rusty and lost most of the year. I'd be happy with a three year deal though so the team has him when he's back to form next year. The good news is that Reed has been so bad that there's probably no way the team can rationalize putting him on the 25-man. If he was throwing 87 MPH but still somehow junkballing AAA hitters on his way to a 4.75 ERA, they'd probably still find a way to justify a call up.
  10. I care more about getting his bat back in the lineup than anything. Might be able to get him some DH spots quite a bit before they ask him to crouch for 9 innings.
  11. Perhaps it could be that the Twins are hopeful/expectant that Graterol may be able to contribute to the big club this year so they aren't going to have him eat up all of his innings down in the panhandle.
  12. I'm willing to see if Duffey's increased heat can pay dividends, but since you're asking, I want the team to go down to AA and get Cody Stashak, who probably should have been put in AAA to start the year but isn't because of all the journeymen vets Rochester is carrying in the bullpen.
  13. While I'd take another starter, and those two would be fine additions in my book, I'm not sure I'd consider them top end starting pitchers at this point in their career. I wouldn't be trusting a guy as streaky as Stroman or an NL-only guy like Bumgarner in game 1. Barring injury, they'd probably still be my #3-4 starter. Which, this team does need more of for depth. I don't think there's going to be a Randy Johnson, Cliff Lee, CC Sabathia, Justin Verlander type available this year.
  14. Yeah, I wouldn't want to give up a 3rd rounder for Rudolph. Or any non-elite TE. So at this point the options appear to be, 1. Trade him for a pick, 2. Let him play out his contract and let him walk and get a comp pick or 3. Release him and get nothing. I have a feeling they're going to end up with nothing.
  15. I agree it looks like they might be saving him. After last year though, I'm not sure I'm completely against it; some of those arms looked really burned out. I still want to see Rogers end the year with the most IP out of the pen, since he is the pen's best arm after all. If they're keeping him fresh for the 2nd half, I might get behind that. Of course if it doesn't pay off, criticism is fair game.
  16. I'd like to think a large group with a right attitude would be able to absorb and alter the negative attitude. But the team is winning and Giles sounds like a particularly troublesome case study, so I wouldn't care to roll the dice on him. Maybe if I thought more of him as a player.
  17. Yeah, I threw quotation marks around the word chemistry in my above post. After doing a bit of Googling myself I retract them so as the word does not appear to be used sarcastically. As a guy who prefers production over clubhouse compatibility 95% of the time, Giles is getting that 5% exception. That perhaps should have been clear after recalling the Astros preferred a guy suspended for domestic abuse to Giles. Though I don't wish him ill because some of the things I'm reading make it seem like he might legitimately need help.
  18. I'd guess Giles publicly known personality and attitude problems would have caused the prior regime to have no interest in him. I'm not sure if this new one puts as much stock into "chemistry" and what not. I'd be interested in Giles, but with what appears to be significant inconsistency (on the mound, I care less about "chemistry") I don't know that I'm as head-over-heels for him as some are. More luke-warm; this guy's always been Jekyll and Hyde. Call me crazy, but I'd probably be more interested in someone like Sean Doolittle, who has proven to be quite consistent across different teams and different leagues. Mark me down for Raisel Iglesias as well if the Reds throw in the towel.
  19. Seeing as we're still about a decade away from seeing if these signings will pay off in any meaningful way, I have no problem with people getting excited (or disappointed) based solely on a ranking, if only to keep a discussion going.
  20. There's clearly a method to this madness, but if someone wrote an article detailing the minutia of this process it would probably be interesting. I'm sure the new spending limits are helping spread these prospects to all teams, but is it kind of a "dibs" situation with gentleman's agreements among clubs? How do small market and cold weather clubs talk these kids into signing? Is no other team offering as much, are the kids even involved in the decisions or is it all scouts, wanna-be agents and "handlers"? If the kid comes from a specific organization's academy, is he most likely to sign with them? Are these kids even at specific teams academies? Because they never seem to get mentioned in the write ups for the players.
  21. So the solution is to not get too many good international players and draft picks in the same years? They should just get one or two they like and then a bunch of chumps so they don't have to pay them 8 years down the road?
  22. I'd be more open to giving 2nd chances and rolling the dice if the team wasn't in 1st place. I don't feel compelled to cross my fingers that the team can wring more value from the contract. If they were in the tank and I thought even at a long shot Reed could regain a bit of trade value come July 31, then I might say let's see what he's got.
  23. If it all correlates, then the same direct line that runs through the proper amount of rest and his effectiveness should also run through what is a velocity that is capable of success, which when he was rested last year appears to be 92 MPH. Since rest is pretty arbitrary and his effectiveness can't be determined until after the fact, shouldn't we just determine if we want to go forward with him based on his velocity which has already shown to be an effective gauge of his success?
  24. He was good in the past, but that just emphasizes that he's getting older. Seeing as his early season games last year coincided with his just barely acceptable FB velocity and his statistical decline coincided with his velocity drop, I don't think we should evaluate him on his track record from 2012-17 so much as his velocity. From my view, if he's not back up to at least 92 MPH on the four seamer, the track record indicates he's going to get shelled.
  25. Cave goes first, then my money is on the team trying to get Morin back through waivers and accepting a Rochester assignment. The Twins haven't had much issue getting relievers through waivers lately. I'd bet Adrianza won't be on the chopping block unless the rest of the roster stays healthy when they have to make a decision on Mejia, but they still might choose to cut ties with Mejia over Adrianza seeing as Mejia hasn't been too helpful this year and the team is leading the division. I don't think Reed suits up for the Twins again unless his return to health coincides with multiple injuries on the 25-man.
