I don't think it was widely reported, but I think it was generally assumed and his demeanor when on camera never construed to the fans that he wanted to be here, and it wasn't like he didn't know that being at the ballpark meant he could always be on camera. So, no damning evidence, but enough circumstantial evidence for me to pass.

I didn't want Lynn when the Twins signed him last year because all he threw were fastballs, but since it was a one year deal I didn't much care. Since that signing he has mixed in his curve much more than he had in his prior seasons, and that does make him a little more attractive to me. But nowhere near attractive enough for me not to worry about a chemistry issue though. But every time the Twins sign a guy to a 3 year deal and trade discussions come up, many people here argue that you can't trade a guy you just signed to a multi year deal, it's bad optics and it might stain your reputation with future free agents. I'm not sure if that's true or not, but I'd bet Texas does not trade Lynn, particularly to a team he clearly wasn't happy playing for last year.

Ha, yeah that one says the Mets should sell him at a “discount” which in his mind would be similar to the four prospect package (which included top prospects Frazier and Sheffield) Cleveland gave up for Andrew Miller PLUS another top 30 prospect. I’d normally presume the author meant organizational top 30, but with a New York publication, it’s quite possible he meant league top 30.

Yeah but the Giants won 3 World Series the last of which was with an 88 win team and now franchise icons Bumgarner and Bochey are performing their swan song. They’ve got enough track record, history and emotion to buy in right now. Forgive me if I’m wrong, but weren’t you one of the fans unhappy with last year’s Twins sell off?

Yeah, I've seen enough of Diekman to believe that Twins fans will be ready to roll him out the door before the week is up. If people are fed up with May and his command, they'd lose their minds with Diekman. I don't see him as an upgrade to what the team has now. Plus, he's historically been pretty LOOGYish, and I don't want a LOOGY, this team needs guys who can go a full inning or two.

I've been waiting to play this game! I don't think SF or AZ will sell and I haven't heard anything about Cincinnati selling, but they'd be dumb not to move at least one or two of their interesting bullpen arms: Felipe Vazquez Kirby Yates Ken Giles Seth Lugo Raisel Iglesias Amir Garrett Ian Kennedy Shane Greene Roenis Elias Buck Farmer Michael Lorenzen Scott Oberg Jose Leclerc Mychal Givens Robert Stephenson Daniel Hudson

Yeah, bullpens league-wide seem to really be struggling, which doesn't seem right after it seemed the Royals loaded bullpen strategy from five years back caught on like wildfire. It seemed like most teams attempted to stockpile stud relievers. There's still a few good pens, but so many of those stockpiled arms are no longer pitching well. Doesn't mean I won't expect the Twins to go out and become one of the few teams that have a pen that can hold a lead though.

I think you'll find that those of us applauding the win going to Thorpe are doing so because it's uncommon, though the right thing to do in our mind. I don't recall your other examples explicitly, but if they're as you state them, we probably would have applauded giving the win to the pitcher who did most of the heavy lifting in those cases as well.

I've yet to see that happen. I assume those butt hurt Tweeters were just watching on TV and not at the game, because it's been scientifically proven that 94.3% of New Yorkers have never been further from their home than New Jersey, and that's only when they got lost and realized they couldn't make a U Turn in the Lincoln Tunnel.

Well Kudos to Duffey for a job well done, but considering the situation, I think if someone was going to make an argument against WPA, this would probably be an ideal example of it not being perfect.

Duffey's effectiveness would only be considered if the starting pitcher went five innings and would have qualified for the win. If the starting pitcher didn't go five innings then the win goes to which pitcher in the official scorer's judgment, was the most effective. Which is usually defaults to the guy who pitched immediately after the starter.

I only got to watch the second inning, in which Perez could not have looked more dominant. He was painting the corners and pulling the strings perfectly on so many off speed pitches. I was surprised tracking the game on my phone that he was having so much trouble with the zone in every other inning.

No but he never turned into the ace they always hoped he would, and he probably never will in Colorado. They could probably get back for him a better haul than he's actually worth. Suckers will probably still bite due to his strong velocity and pedigree, and I'm just the sucker for them.

Ha, yeah pretty standard MO for Rockies hitters. After not moving Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez at peak value due to inflated home stats, maybe they've finally learned their lesson and decided to cash in while there's cash to be got. They did do pretty will moving a similar home/road splitter in Corey Dickerson a few years back though. I'd guess other teams might be wise to the ruse by now though. Or at least they can see his age and remaining contract and talk themselves out of liking him.

If Stroman doesn't start missing more bats, I'd rather look elsewhere. I don't trust pitchers who intentionally pitch to contact here in 2019. If the Rockies are listening to Charile Blackmon, that probably means they'd listen on Jon Gray. He's a name I haven't heard much of but I like to rescue from Colorado.

I want another starter, but Boyd is about the last of the available guys I want, I think he's a total mirage. Or was a mirage at least, I think the facade is already coming down. Does he still come at a premium price now that he hasn't allowed fewer than 3 ER in any of his last 8 starts and has given up multiple HR in five of those appearances?

Article: Building a Perfect Twins Trade Deadline
nicksaviking replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm not as big on Bumgarner as some, but sometimes those types of pitchers find a second wind. Also, if Carl Pavano can energize a club house after an August deadline trade, I'd think a big name Bumgarner would really get the other players pumped up. Not my first choice, but I could see some intangible benefits if nothing else.- 39 replies

Please Stop Telling Me How To Be A Fan
nicksaviking commented on Dave Overlund's blog entry in Dome Dogg's Blog
I'm willing to part with big time prospects, but I don't see any Cliff Lee-in-his-prime types available this year. The Twins find themselves contending in an unfortunate year where nearly all the best pitchers are already on playoff contending teams. Of the rumored starters available, only Syndergaard gets me thinking happy front of the rotation thoughts. I'd still like to figure something out. I like but don't love Bumgarner, but getting a big name (even if he doesn't provide big results anymore) may have a positive even if incalculable psychological impact on the club. -
I wouldn't trade much for him, but he's now dropped the sinker which it appeared Pittsburgh insisted he start using despite it not being a regular pitch for him in the past. I think he has a shot to be a good bounce back guy in the right hands. Not sure those hands are the Twins, but maybe. I've never been a big Sonny Gray fan, but that contract looks fairly nice, I might be able to be convinced that his struggles were all NY related. But the Reds just extend him, I'd think they might not even offer him up. I do like Anthony Desclafani though.
-
Pass on Diekman, but I've had my eye on Elias all year. Good velocity and I always like those former starters turned relievers, he should be able to go multiple innings when needed. I'm often on an island as far as preferred pitchers go, but he's much closer to the top of my wish list than he is to the bottom.
-
Whaaaa?!? Was he trying to catch it with his cup?! Show off. Anyone have a velocity reading on Cody Allen yet? I have no interest until/unless he starts hitting 94-95 again.

Yeah, the Giants look like a bad team that is still somehow winning a reasonable number of games. That 2nd WC in the NL is troublesome. I can't see St Louis, Philadelphia or Milwaukee waiving the white flag under any circumstance, so it would be real nice if two of them went on a blistering run ASAP. It sure would be a shame if SD, COL, AZ, SF, PIT and CIN all decide they're close enough to hang on to their players. Those teams have a lot of the arms I'd like to try to get. Or maybe even worse, if only one or two of those teams decide to sell, then they get to hold everyone over a barrel because of the lack of sellers. Sure seemed like last year it was a buyers market at the deadline; looks to be the opposite this year now that the Twins are shopping around.
