Article: MLB Draft Day 3 Thread
nicksaviking replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He's only 20 so there's probably sign-ability issues. Of course the Twins affinity for power bats and positional flexibility should be a good selling point to this young man. Though probably not as good of a selling point as a well over-slot bonus.- 111 replies

With all these college seniors, how much money has this team banked? Are they just going to draft one of the HS kids at pick 40 and offer him all of the money?- 111 replies

Article: 2019 MLB Draft Day 2 Thread
nicksaviking replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm kind of bummed about the lack of HS kids, though I suppose they can still try to get some later, if they're somehow able to get some of these college juniors to go underslot. I'm less concerned about the power/positional profile of these middle infielders. There seems to be a lot of them so it's likely someone will stick. Also, squeezing power out of the bats seems to be a new talent of this club. If they truly have found a trick to it, then getting guys who everyone else is unsure about developing power is a pretty smart move.- 171 replies

I’m just wondering what assumptions in regards to performance people have for these two unsigned pitchers? Based on the track record of in-season signings, my take is that that’d both be much more likely to be terrible than they would good. What are other people’s thoughts on what would make them buck that trend?

I remember when I was younger and the broadcast would cut away to the parents of a player getting interviewed in the stands, I'd think they were just killing time with some dopey hubbub for the grandmothers who were watching the game to talk about in their sewing circles the next day. Now they make me cry and I wish they'd spend the whole damn inning with the parents.

As is the case with most young pitchers who don’t miss many bats, my expectations are pretty low for Smeltzer. Though he was getting good strikeout numbers in AA. Maybe Wes Johnson has some ideas. Regardless, go get Devin, and keep rocking the Kent Tekulve look!

Here’s to a swift recovery for the young men. While I was hoping to see Graterol this year, there’s really not a ton of spots outside of the bullpen to see prospects this year. However, there are some pretty good trade chips on this list that may need to be crossed off.

I'd trade one of the top guys for Scherzer, but he's got a Bobby Bonilla contract. I might think that deal is almost trade-proof, particularly after it's pointed out to the buying team's owners that they'll still be paying this guy 5 years after he retires. Not to mention the actual total for two and a half years of service is going to cost about 100M. Sign me up, but uh, we'd probably have to take back every terrible thing we've ever said about a Pohlad if they take on that one.

I would like Syndergaard, but if the Mets keep hanging around .500 he probably won't be available. They have a bunch of key guys on the IL with short term injuries and their stud arms haven't rounded into form yet. I'm cheering against them for the sole purpose of trying to get my hands on their pitching staff, but my money is on the Mets going on a decent run in near future.

Interesting situation the Twins find themselves in. They have a surplus of talented OF and MI prospects, but don't really have any immediate offensive holes to fill. I hope the Mets fall back far enough to open up bidding for Syndergaard, but if they don't, there doesn't look to be much for top end starters available this summer. There will be relievers available, but it looks like most of the elite ones are either not on the rosters of sellers, or they are injured. Many of the relievers I find most interesting are probably more under the radar and may not garner big named prospects.

Article: Building for Primetime
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yup, Cody Stashak's my guy, and he's being groomed as a multi-inning guy too. He shouldn't be in AA right now Going externally, I think my top priority would be a starter over a reliever (though I'd take some of both). Mostly because I think Pineda's 4-seam/slider combo might play pretty good in the bullpen and shaving his outings down to 1 or 2 innings, he might end up being a better bullpen upgrade than what's available in trade.- 37 replies

It's starting to look like it's going to be a disappointing end to what three years ago looked like a great story for Hildenberger. Still, even it he doesn't get another shot, overall it was pretty good run for a guy drafted in the 22nd round.

Surveying the 2018/19 Free Agent Relievers at the Quarter Pole
nicksaviking commented on diehardtwinsfan's blog entry in diehardtwinsfan's Blog
Yeah, nice list Diehard. At one point I wanted just about everyone on that list. Funny thing though, of the top tier guys, the two I least wanted were Ottavino due to his long history of control problems and Britton as he had fallen back on what I felt was an outdated sinker and was putting the ball in play too much. I usually laugh at myself when i'm completely wrong, but it stings a bit when it ends up being the Yankees who somehow had it right. -
Why I'm Out On Craig Kimbrel
nicksaviking commented on Tom Froemming's blog entry in Get to know 'em
I'm right there with Tom. The bullpen has been just fine, but I don't trust it so I'd like to find some upgrades. And while I wanted Kimbrel early on, I don't trust any pitcher to round into form this late into the year. I would disagree in that while his end of 2018 numbers aren't pretty, his velocity is likely still good enough to work; but perhaps not until 2020. So I'd take him on a multi-year deal but I'd think there'd be a better than even chance that he'd be a pretty big liability for the 2019 club. -
Article: Buxton a Star in Center and 9th
nicksaviking replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I was an advocate for Buxton to move up early, but since everyone is hitting, I don't know that I much care. If I was going to move him up, I'd probably put him in the #2 hole and have Polanco lead off though. -
What?!?! How was the manager and pitcher arguing that ejection? The guy intentionally threw behind Lewis because of the silly push-up thing. That manager looked pretty young, and I feel bad for saying this, but if he thinks retaliation is justified for a batter doing a push up at 2nd base I hope he's never considered for promotion.

I'd like there to be as many good options as possible for the pen, but unless Vasquez can gain significant velocity I don't think he'll be able to do much at the MLB level.

OK, if he's 95-96 then I buy into the strikeouts more. I'm game for giving him a shot.

Please go to Pensacola for relief help. I've definitely got my preferred choice but there are a few arms down there that I'd rather see than Adams or anyone else still hanging around Rochester.

Perhaps it could be that the Twins are hopeful/expectant that Graterol may be able to contribute to the big club this year so they aren't going to have him eat up all of his innings down in the panhandle.

Article: Longest Tenured Minnesota Twins - 2019
nicksaviking replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So the solution is to not get too many good international players and draft picks in the same years? They should just get one or two they like and then a bunch of chumps so they don't have to pay them 8 years down the road?- 30 replies
