On the positive side, it looks like they've really improved his control as his BB numbers are down quite a bit. He's more hittable now though. Maybe there's a similar adjustment to remedy that.

Nice list. Yeah, there's nearly a dozen names on that list the fans could/would/should resent losing. No better time than to start making some 3-1 or 4-1 trades.

He was my adopt a prospect last year, and my bold prediction last Rule V was that it would be Stashak, not Jay, Diaz or Reed who would be selected. I was wrong but those other 29 teams look like they're missing out. Also the 30th team as well, because he should be on the Twins 25-man by now. But, boy, you know the Twins are having a good season when a 1B/C like Wilin Rosraio still hasn't sniffed the MLB roster. He's hitting well, could be a third catcher and has the veteran name people remember. Seems like typically he'd be the exact guy the organization would go out of their way to promote at the expense of the fans' eyes rolling out of their heads.

Article: Week in Review: Second Half Statement
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm Ok selling off the livestock, but agree with the Thorpe/Smeltzer/Stashak takes. I'm a little worried that the Twins are going to find that the bullpen is all so perfectly mediocre that the decisions regarding it will be difficult to make. Rogers is the only guy who needs to be kept, but there's not any particular guy who's in imminent need of replacement.- 29 replies

Well I would say that after Cleveland got their new stadium in the mid 1990's and were good through the decade and into the early 2000's, they were almost always a top 10 payroll team. The Twins have cracked the top 10 once. Recent Cleveland teams haven't been given that luxury though. Good counterpoint though. They were competitive for a decade and didn't stress the front office about easing back on the throttle. Though, it's not like they were spending all that much to begin with.

Yeah, that trade was just what the doctor ordered. It had been fun watching Jacque Jones launch a lead off HR once a week, but he wasn't drawing many walks in 2003 and always was a quick out when a lefty was starting. While Kielty was a fun player, I didn't remember the trade dealing too much stress since he was still only platooning with Dustin Mohr, and Michael Cuddyer, Mike Ryan, Lew Ford and Michael Restovich were all waiting in the wings tearing the cover off of the ball in Rochester. It was a great trade, but with Morneau, Mauer, Todd Sears, Jason Bartlet, Josh Rabe, Terry Tiffee, Garrett Jones and Jason Kubel all with very nice looking bats*, they had lots of equity to deal with. *Editors Note: BJ Garbe no longer qualified for inclusion with this statement and needed to be redacted.

Kirilloff and Lewis are both heating up. Their early season struggles may have timed out well after all. If they end up hitting in the 2nd half more similarly to what they did last year, they'll probably get their one-level promotion, which based on how the MLB team is rostered, was probably going to be the case even had they been hitting well in the 1st half as well. Which means less frustration from us about not seeing them in the majors already, since it was never going to happen anyway!

I don't mind the more under-the-radar names, but maybe not this one in particular. I just don't like all the contact he gives up. I'd rather not rely on the Twins infield to have to make almost all of his outs for him late in games. I'm not sure I buy into his sudden strikeout increase continuing with such a heavy sinker usage.

With Davis, Rooker, Raley and Larnich hitting so well and with Kirilloff, Badoo and Celestino still having some steam, I sure hope teams looking to sell pitching this year are interested in outfield help. The Twins look to be OK in that department at the MLB level in the near future.

I'd be interested be more interested in a "bounceback" kind of player, but Diekman's season isn't exactly an outlier, the lack of control isn't new, this just who he is.

Glasnow and Meadows weren’t elite prospects when traded, both had lost their shine, Glasnow in particular.

Pittsburgh has recently traded Gerrit Cole, Andrew McCutchen and Daniel Hudson, the return for all of these players, was exclusively MLB ready types. Nearly everyone of the players they brought back were former prospects who had lost some luster but had already debuted at the MLB level. It was no secret that Cole and McCutchen were going to be traded, and while everyone was picking apart how many top 100 prospects Pittsburgh would be able to get for them, they actually opted to go in a different direction. Only their Daniel Freese and Ivan Nova trades did they sell off a player for a (non)prospect, but those guys weren't going to fetch anything of value anyway. The Pirates have the history of a team that is valuing being able to place the players they get in a trade right on the 25-man. This is the team that may value the Romero/Gonsalves/Gordon types much more than anyone would expect. Those guys are fairly comparable to Joe Musgrove, Colin Morin and Kyle Crick.

Thankfully none of the injuries appear to be of great significance. Honestly, I kind of like this adversity at this point of the year. Guys are being forced to step up both out of position defensively and out of position as far as lineup construction goes. And so far they're winning despite the team looking like Baldelli is choosing who plays what position and where they bat by drawing names out of a hat. If the Twins cruised through the season with no adversity, I'd be more worried about them come the playoffs.

I agree that relief arms are the biggest crapshoots, but here's hoping they put that data to use. Don't chase trades based on name and reputation, those things are fleeting with this position. Go for the guys who data suggests have the repertoire, peripherals, velocity and make up to transition to a new situation. And that might still be the big names, I'd like Iglesias too.

I might think this would make for a good article all on it's own. For me, Allen went from a "Meh" to a "You have me full attention" with another great Parker Hageman deep dive.

I’ve seen Robbie Grossman, Marwin Gonzalez and Willans Astudillo do it the past two years. I think you’re overestimating what’s expected from the back up outfielders.

Same pattern as last year. I hope it's a 'getting adjusted to a new level' kind of thing and not a 'getting adjusted to the season/weather' kind of thing. I'm a Rooker fan, but if he ends up as a yearly staple on the 25-man, I hope he's not always struggling in April.

I'll never see anyone as a guaranteed upgrade, which is probably why I don't view current or past counting stats as a great indicator of continued success for a pitcher moving teams and why I'd prefer to use some of the peripheral and anecdotal evidence to figure out if the guy will be good upon a move here. These guys are uprooting themselves and perhaps their family, going to a new city, a new stadium, a new climate with new teammates and new coaches, sometimes against their will unbeknownst to the fans, sometimes to their excitement but almost always burdened with high expectations. I'm wholly in favor of multiple trades for the pen, but big names aren't going to give me a ton more confidence than under-the-radar names simply because how many psychological human factors are at play.

I'd absolutely take him for depth, but I wouldn't be counting on him slotting anywhere higher than 4th in the rotation. I'm not a fan of guys coming over from the NL and I'm not a fan of guys with that much mileage on their arms. But, a deal for such a big name, even if he's past his prime, would surely give the clubhouse a booster shot of morale. They may not need one, but extra morale isn't on the banned substance list last I checked so it wouldn't hurt. Also, it would make vanimal extra happy if anyone feels like throwing him a bone.

Article: Zack Littell Changes Role, Changes Mindset
nicksaviking replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not just the Twins. I love starters turned relievers, the Twins should be targeting these guys from other clubs. Some were only perceived to only have iffy stuff or control at best, some were busted prospects, some were forced into the role, but just some of the guys who came up as starters or were starters in the minors just prior to their call up: Josh Hader, Brad Hand, Will Smith, Raisel Iglesias, Edwin Diaz, Zach Britton, Blake Treinen, Hansel Robles, Felipe Vazquez, Roberto Osuna, Andrew Miller, Delin Betances, Wade Davis, Ian Kennedy, John Gant, Trevor Rosenthal, Jake MaGee, Jeurys Familia, Alex Colome. The Twins should never be letting a guy like Liam Hendricks out of the building before seeing what he has out of the pen first. The list of top bullpen arms is a who's-who of former starters.- 29 replies

I never thought much of Littell. Until I saw him throwing 97 MPH, wow, that was unexpected. I now I'm very encouraged about the possibility of him becoming a Rogers-ish organizational after-thought turned bullpen standout. Added bonus if the Twins end up being able to pull one over on the Yankees.- 29 replies
