Article: Tyler Austin Traded to San Francisco

Yeah, comparing Austin and his one tool isn't fair to Benson who at least had three. -

I may have missed that. Congrats I'm sure are due to all who participated, I'm very proud of the e-talent our club has assembled. -

With managers' reluctance to play both catchers in the same lineup, it's probably hard to see Garver and Astudillo regularly on the field if Castro is sent down. I'd rather Castro be removed from the roster than either Garver or Astudillo sent down, but I'd keep him around if it allows for the other two to play most days. -

I feel bad for De Jong, but I was never terribly interested in him due to his inability to miss bats in the minors. I'd like to see Vazquez or Stewart in the pen instead. Assuming Romero isn't ready. -

I like the subtext here as well. Even though they're not in the same clubhouse, Garver's still chatting up the pitchers. That sounds like a real catcher to me! -

I would have even preferred low end pitching and see if Was Johnson is truly magical. But either way I’m glad they ripped the band aid off now instead of letting it linger into the summer. I think it was better for the anxious fans on both sides of the debate. And certainly better for Austin. -
Sure but if Andreoli is called up to the majors to be the 4th/5th OF, I think I'd still prefer he was the 4th OF in Rochester so the prospects could get most of the defensive reps. It's only been four games so we'll have to see how it plays out, but I'd worry that if Raley is stuck DH'ing half of the time, he's going to be pigeon-holed similarly at the majors. I'd also hope that if the Twins needed another defensively competent OF for a short term replacement, even if it's the 4th OF, that it would be Wade, not Andreoli. There are too many of these guys in Rochester right now. Even if it's sporadic, I hope they start giving them some MLB looks when they can because there will never be a scenario where there's room on the MLB roster for all of them. The clock is already ticking on figuring out the growing logjam of corner bats, they need to use any kind of injury replacement for MLB evaluations.

Why is Raley playing CF and DH? Is Wade not a better CF candidate than Raley? And is Andreoli really going to be the primary CF? Because I'd like to see all of Wade, Raley, Rooker and Weil starting and playing the field most days. Also, Cody Stashak = future Twins multi inning bullpen ace who too many people slept on. A year from now 29 other teams are going to look at each other and say "I can't believe we didn't grab him in the Rule V!"

I don't know, it kind of looks like he stole two maybe three strikes and had five maybe four strikes called balls.

Article: Tyler Austin Traded to San Francisco
nicksaviking replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I wouldn't have minded trying him in the OF. Though even if they had, the way things are shaking out this year I wouldn't have wanted him to get too many at bats anyway. I used to be a platoon Kepler guy, I'm starting to buy into the hype and contract extension now though. -

Article: 2019 Fort Myers Miracle Preliminary Roster
nicksaviking replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If the rules had actually been meant to hold teams to spending limits there wouldn't have been penalties in the first place because there wouldn't have been the option of going overslot. There was no breached agreement, if there was, teams would have been forced to relinquish the rights to the prospects, as the Braves were forced to last year when they actually were in violation of International Signing rules. It was no different than going over the salary cap luxury tax threshold. Plenty of teams (used to) do that.- 36 replies

I'm not very high on glove only (mostly) catchers in the minors. Those guys tend to only end up as nomads in the majors, never sticking with a team overly long. He'll get me interested if he starts OPSing +.800. And I'm not at all suggesting he can't do that. Just that there seems to be little indication he's going to have much of a bat.

So then isn't your argument that had the Twins gone overslot and paid the penalty they could have had Eloy Jimenez?- 36 replies

Yeah, there will be a point where the hits stop falling, but his track record suggests he'll always be an extreme outlier when it comes to not striking out; that's really valuable from my perspective.

Last year stunk. I'm guessing even though he was under contract, Molitor knew his job was on the line and no matter what Astudillo did, Molitor was going to have a hard time entrusting his future to a guy who's abilities compared to his physique seemed to defy the laws of physics.

At this point I wouldn't lump Astudillo as part of the get away lineup, if he's not starting somewhere most days I think the fans are going to be frustrated. Schoop hasn't done much yet, it kind of seemed like the right time to give Adrianza a start. Austin was probably due for a start as well. The optics might have been better had he started for Kepler instead of Cron as Cron has been hitting well, but I'm not sure if Austin is going to play OF this year and even if he is Kepler in CF might be the default option all year for when Buxton is out. Anyway, it might have been a getaway lineup, but the bench is solid and I'll be in favor of any rationale that keeps the superior bats of Garver and Astudillo in the lineup over the "starter" Castro.

Article: MIN 5, KC 4 (10 Innings): Cruz Steps Up
nicksaviking replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think the team has some decently rounded hitters in Cruz, Polanco, Rosario, ideally Kepler and even Cron based on last year. Gonzalez is generally satisfactory at getting on base and Astudillo always makes contact. I think the team is built to hit HR, but I think they've got +.320 OPS potential throughout the lineup which should allow for them to string together some nice rallies consistently.- 60 replies

Article: Three Catcher Conundrum
nicksaviking replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't like the personal catcher route; all the pitchers would ask for Castro due to his veteran reputation, whether it's deserved or not anymore. I'd start Garver behind the plate about 50% of the games and Castro and Astudillo 25% of the games each, with Astudillo getting time at other positions more days than he's riding the bench. If this all gets to be too entangled, the team could do the inevitable and find Austin a new team now, making Garver the off day 1B as well. -
Gondalves and Gordon may be heading in the wrong direction, but Rooker, Raley and Wiel aren’t. Wade is holding steady and Thorpe and Stewart both bounced back last year. I mean the elite guys, Lewis, Kirilloff and Graterol aren’t there yet but they’re not far away from Rochester. That is if they don’t skip it altogether.

Sounds like Wilin Rosario was hitting well and I'm rarely against any MiLB deal, but boy, now you're pushing two of Rooker, Raley and Wiel out of the DH/1B spots and into the OF? Though to be perfectly honest, I really don't care about Rochester's defense or their W/L, (sorry Rochester fans). Those guys could play SS as far as I'm concerned as long as they're getting their at bats. Is Nicolino's rotation spot only temporary until Gonsavles comes back? I had no interest in him in the rotation, I only thought he might have a slim chance of being one of those starters who took off in the bullpen a year removed from being a starter.

Forget about his big doubles yesterday, I think his 5th inning sac fly is the reason he should be playing most days and hitting near the top of the lineup. His MLB sample size is small, but I think his unmatched ability to avoid the strikeout was legendary before he was ever called up. Terry Francona was a fool for pitching to him with less than 2 outs, runners on 2nd and 3rd and a base open; every batter's goal is just to put the ball in play to score a run and Astudillo is almost a stone cold lock to do so. I could see an arguement for him to be a clutch situational pinch hitter, but there aren't enough black holes in the lineup that would tempt Baldelli to make that switch regularly. It's not like Castro is always going to be the one at the plate when you just need someone to make contact. Bottom line: if you assume the strikeout and un-intentional walk are not one of the probable outcomes of the at bat, he's often going to force the other team's manager to make decisions he typically would not have to.

I'm hopeful he just did it yesterday. I think Polanco/Astudillo at the top of the lineup would look good right now, hopefully replaced by Buxton/Astudillo in a couple weeks.
