I'll be the odd man here; Arraez can battle with Urshela for the 3B spot, but he doesn't need to be penciled into the lineup every day and he certainly doesn't need to take up the DH spot; there are better hitters available. He's trending downwards in every conceivable stat the last three years and he's got pretty much no extra base potential.

Josh Winder Shouldn't Make the Opening Day Rotation
nicksaviking replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If Winder is “damaged” because he gets hit hard early in his career, he’s not going to be the type of pitcher I want on this team. That’s cold I know, but that’s professional sports. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the only three good starting pitchers this team has developed in the last 30 years, Berrios, Santana and Radke, got the snot knocked out of them early but were mentally tough enough to learn and prosper from it. No codling, toss these guys into the deep end; we only want the ones who can make it back up anyway.- 48 replies

Josh Winder Shouldn't Make the Opening Day Rotation
nicksaviking replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
90% of rookie pitchers struggle no matter when they are called up. Probably more. Is there a better time for him to learn and adjust than early this season? From my perspective, it’s better to do it now when the team doesn’t look ready to contend.- 48 replies

How Soon Do the Twins Need a Fifth Starter?
nicksaviking replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Geez, putting the cart in front of the horse aren't we? I'm more concerned about the 2nd, 3rd and 4th starters! -
I’d like whatever pitching they get to be controlled longer than the A’s duo. It would be another pipe dream for sure, but Miami wants a CF. Would they consider moving Trevor Rodgers for Kepler + Lewis or Martin + Arraez or Urshala + Strotman or Winder?

Twins To Sign Carlos Correa
nicksaviking replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is disorienting. This is also a great deal, even if it turns out to be one year. It shows the fans they team is willing to go out of their comfort zone, and it shows future top end free agents MN is a legit destination. Never hurts to get on Scott Boras’ good side either. His top clients tend to funnel toward a clique of teams. -
Second Deadline Passes, Still No Deal

Second Deadline Passes, Still No Deal
nicksaviking replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This should be true but is wholly inaccurate. These are billionaires who know that a dollar in their pocket today is worth more than the buck fifty they'd get next year. They want every dime they can grab now and will worry about the future later. You need to look no further than their short sighted and likely fatal broadcasting decisions. They could and should buy back the TV rights so they can broadcast them to everyone in the country either for free or next to free, just like they did back when everyone on this board grew up watching baseball. Now we have an entire generation that doesn't care about baseball and plenty of kids who have NEVER seen a game. This is 100% on the owners. Do the players want more money? Of course they do because the teams are constantly trying to grab every penny they can, consequences be damned. The owners could have taken the path of the other professional leagues and opened their books to the union and agreed to revenue sharing amongst teams and a percentage split with the players decades ago. Now that bridge seems to have burned. These men are flat out awful stewards of the game. Sure, the players may also be villainous, but the owners set the fire long ago. Saying they care more about preserving the game than the players, who have a finite amount of years to earn what they can, doesn't amount to much. I get that the owners will never care about the game as much as the fans, but could they at least care as much as the NFL and NBA owners? -
Shortened Season- A Win for Twins?
nicksaviking commented on Melissa Berman's blog entry in The Hot Corner
I was one of those very few fans in the stands. My family and I always found a couple of games a year to go to, which was pretty good since we were 230 miles away. You could go to batting practice and almost always get a ball. As a teenager I jumped down behind the baggy and grabbed a half dozen of them once. The only employee there to chew me out was a nervous 20-year-old who told me I couldn't do that again. Even the organization didn't care enough to run a tight ship it seemed. That strike did coincide with the start of some really awful Twins teams though, so it's probably hard to determine what was the main cause for fan apathy, at least for Minnesotans. However, I can honestly say that my level of enthusiasm for MLB baseball has probably never been lower than it is right now. -
Lockout Lookup: Cristian Guzman
nicksaviking replied to RandBalls Stu's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think you're underselling Brian Buchanan. He was traded for Jason Bartlett, who was traded for Delmon Young, who was then traded for Lester Oliveros who holds the Twins record for career ERA vs the Yankees at 0.00. -

Peacemaker is pretty damn funny, and surprisingly emotional. Well, maybe it shouldn't be too surprising, James Gunn did some similar stuff with Guardians of the Galaxy.

We Should Be More Excited About Noah Miller
nicksaviking replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
No. Michael had zero upside and was a college bat. He wasn't even a particularly good college bat; he had no power and his only skill was being able to draw a walk. I wasn't alone in loathing that pick from the get go.- 24 replies

Stock Watch: 3 Falling Twins Prospects
nicksaviking replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I'm bummed out about Lewis, but seeing how quickly position playing prospects Sano and Kirilloff recovered from TJ surgery, I'm looking forward to seeing him rebound in a big way. Cavaco stings, especially considering Bryson Stott was picked right after him and he's in AAA for the Phillies right now. He might have solved the Twins 2022 SS conundrum.- 22 replies

What Happens if the MLB Season Gets Delayed?
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Baseball can't afford to lose this season. But honestly, the MLB player pay structure, service time, economic disparity and revenue sharing are so broken, there's no way to fix it all in a couple of months. Anything they can accomplish between now and March would only be a band aid over a gushing wound. I'd guess the only way the young players stop getting taken advantage of and the fans get team parity is for the owners to suffer a lost season. -
Still Looking Up for Larnach
nicksaviking replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins have always had more success with offensive prospects than pitching, I think that’s a big reason 2021 was so disappointing. At least one of Larnach, Kirilloff, Rooker or Celestino should have popped. They all crashed in one way or another. Need this to happen this year. -
Ranking the Twins Top Pitching Prospects by ETA
nicksaviking replied to Nash Walker's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Good list, I'm getting excited to see these guys. This team didn't get the starting pitching it needed in free agency. I'm over it, but unless they want to drag out contending into 2024 or beyond, they can't tinker with these guys in the minors most of the season and have most of them debut late in the year. Get them up to the majors early. Much earlier than we expect, let them work out their kinks against the real competition. Don't coddle them, toss them in the deep end. We need to have a large sample size on most of these guys this year if the team is planning on building a competing rotation through development alone. Radke, Santana, Berrios are the only three starting pitchers this team has developed even remotely recently that weren't at all cringeworthy when the team ran them out in the playoffs. All got lit up as rookies, it was ugly. I don't think it's a coincidence that the best pitchers this team has developed did NOT suffer from 'not-being-ready' in the long run. They were mentally tough and figured out what needed to be done to be good pitchers. If getting their butts whipped is going to stunt the development of any of these new arms, I don't think they are the types of pitchers I'd want leading the rotation anyway.- 15 replies

I'm probably in the minority, but I've always thought good defense was overrated. While I'd prefer a better option at SS, if the alternate option is Polanco at 2B and another season of a blackhole bat at SS, I guess I'd roll with Polanco again. Giving 500 PAs to someone who's going to have a .600 OPS seems way worse than someone who's going to bungle a couple dozen balls as opposed to an average SS who will bungle only a dozen. But I mean, there's no rule saying the Twins can't go get a SS that's competent with a bat and a glove..........

Josh Donaldson is Better Than You Think
nicksaviking replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like Donaldson as a player. The only reason I'd move him if there is an interested team, is because the Twins inaction during free agency informed me not to take the 2022 season too seriously.- 25 replies

The Lockout Diaries: Week 7
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
*****Moderator Note***** Let's stay the course on this thread please. This doesn't need to dissolve into more finger pointing and protectively guarding a pet topic. This thread was about the lock out, not justifying payrolls and market sizes. -
I used to think this was an easy no. But the team has next to nobody else to spend money on any time soon. There aren't any young players that need to be extended in the next couple of years and free agency doesn't appear to be a priority at the moment. If it's not outrageous, go ahead and pay the guy.

Sorry, but I don’t think I’m the only one who couldn’t care less if the Twins won 75 games or 55 games. These guys do nothing to win the club a World Series. If all the team is willing to do is make extremely minimal effort improvements, it’s better to make no improvements at all. I’d rather hold onto he trade equity and give more innings and experience to the prospects. When the best adjective for a free agent is “serviceable” keep walking.

Minnesota Twins to Sign 3 Top International Talents

Most of the top young talent in the league comes from these international signings. Fingers crossed. The Twins absolutely have to start finding their Accuna’s, Tatis’s, Guerrero’s and Soto’s here.- 25 replies
