  1. Pretty sure the Giants are paying half of his salary and the Mariners the other half. https://www.si.com/mlb/giants/news/mlb-offseason-mariners-trade-former-sf-giants-anthony-desclafani-twins-jorge-polanco
  2. They also signed Correa and extended Lopez. Gallo and those other mid level and lower free agents are the problem. They could have kept Sonny Gray or acquired a similar pitcher and basically kept the same payroll as last year; far less than 200M. I agree that the front office is being inefficient though, specifically with platooning. Two players to do one job? That's a bad use of roster space. One player to do one job and then you can build your bench to be more flexible and more productive.
  3. I don't disagree. I put most of the blame on ownership. Pulling the plug on spending on good MLB players is the biggest factor here. They took their foot off of the gas when it looked like this team had a shot at winning the race if they only floored it instead. But I am tired of Baldelli continually throwing the same things against the wall that he has already seen don't stick, instead of seeing if something new will. I mean, Wallner only has seven hits against left handers this year, but that is still incalculably a higher percentage than Margot has hits as a pinch hitter.
  4. I'd actually say Gardy was the different manager. Everyone's favorite manager Tom Kelly was more similar to Baldelli at least in terms of unabashedly deferring to the less talented veteran players. He didn't seem to trust or even like young players. Gardy took over when the team was at it's payroll nadir but prospect peak and did well both trusting the young guys and getting the most from them. If this team is slashing payroll again, they're going to need another Ron Gardenhire, because someone is going to have to get the most out of these young players or else we'll be stuck praying that more bargain bin free agents are going to somehow save the day.
  5. They fired Gardenhire after things got stale, and then did the same with Molitor even just one year removed from a playoff appearance. In both cases I was in favor of the moves, not necessarily because the managers did anything wrong, but because firing the manager tends to be one of the most effective moves when it comes to motivating under-performing players. The situation is similar now and it's easier and cheaper to replace the manager than a dozen players. However I agree, Baldelli likely isn't going anywhere for the simple reason that he's still under contract and with ownership crying poor, I don't see them paying two managers next year.
  6. Sorry, but I can't get behind the unconditional trust angle, because for every instance he trusts a player, he also distrusts another. His trust in Margot to pinch hit is offset by his distrust in Wallner to stay in the lineup. His trust in Cole Irvin or Caleb Theilbar or Ronny Hernandez is offset by his distrust of the starting pitcher.
  7. Announcer: Trevor Lawrence's problem is that he's always trying to be perfect. Sure? I can't quite wrap my mind around that logic, but you're the expert.
  8. Maybe they were saying Booooo-rrow?
  9. I thought he was going to be the best of the rookie QBs since he could improvise with his legs, yet he hasn't run all that much this year. I'm not a Kliff Kingsbury fan (geez, what's up with me and all the coach hate today?), but Daniels could be special.
  10. Admittedly, I never liked Pederson, I thought he lucked his way into a one in a million situation. I thought Frank Reich was the secret mastermind on that team. So, I obviously didn't nail that half of the take!
  11. As a team they seemed to give up as soon as the Bills scored. Kind of like another team I know.........
  12. I was just going to come here to ask who had the Jaguars as the worst team in the league? I'd say Lawrence is overrated but not a bottom of the barrel QB. Doug Pederson? Very likely a terrible coach though.
  13. I'm not sure what you mean by limited practice. Was he injured? He's been with the club for two years now. It's not like their offense is loaded, but they're far from the least talented group in the league. Honestly, I wasn't surprised, and even swapped out a Raiders defense in a fantasy league once they announced the switch. It seemed to be a reasonable comparison to last year's Joe Flacco situation.
  14. Royce to Max Kepler:
  15. Boy the Falcons. You're staring at a go ahead TD but need 4th down and a foot, and you stretch out a horizontal run instead of go right up the middle? I thought Cousins was going to pull another one out of his butt.
  16. Man, losing their best defensive player this past offseason was a genius decision. Remove Hunter and Hicks but then bring in 6 front seven players who can both rush the QB AND drop into coverage is going to be impossible to game plan. And then because of that, they don't need great coverage corners, just corners who can make tackles.
  17. The prices for relief pitchers at the trade deadline was absurd. I'm not too disappointed they didn't pay those prices. What I'm disappointed in is during the off season the team targeted no-name relievers in their mid 30's who had next to no track record of sustained success. The Rays get away with this, Terry Ryan actually used to be pretty good at this, but so far, Thad Levine has not shown a knack for this. Get a higher class of bullpen arms right away and don't put yourself in position to be gouged in July.
  18. Considering that in most years, the weakest division winners are usually worse than the teams that are 3rd and 4th in the top divisions, you'd actually be keeping the better teams out of the playoffs.
  19. The Twins waived the white flag on meaningful contention when they refused to replace Sonny Gray last winter. I know everybody is upset right now, but really, most of us knew the best case scenario was grabbing a meaningless playoff spot only to likely get walloped early. Honestly, if people want organizational changes next year, there's a better chance of that if the team collapses and misses the playoffs. A token playoff appearance means less pressure on the Pohlad's to spend, less pressure on St. Peter to do a fan-friendly TV deal, less pressure to overhaul the roster and less pressure to replace this site's whipping boy manager. Getting Swept by the Astros in the first round would just be status quo for this club, which means full speed ahead with the current game plan.
  20. You're probably right, and I think we're already seeing that with some teams. I wouldn't be shocked if the 49ers don't give Purdy a big deal and instead say, we can do this with another QB (even if they're wrong). I still don't like those teams' chances of winning it all though so I'd like my team to be one of the ones with an elite QB, even if he's paid too much.
  21. I don't know, of the starting QBs in the league, even if they weren't studs out of the gate, most at least showed competence. Goff is maybe the only guy who looked completely lost but was able to at least become competent with his original club. Guys like Josh Allen and Trevor Lawrence had struggles, but Allen could do things with his legs and Lawrence was willing and able to air it out. There was excitement for both after their rookie years. There's too much baggage in Carolina. I think they'd be foolish to go back to him ever unless Dalton goes down this year. With Geno Smith, Baker Mayfield and (knock on wood) Sam Darnold, we've seen the path from busted prospect to resurrection quite a bit recently, and all roads run through a different city.
  22. Dalton should be washed up, yet still seems like a situation where he's going to go out there next week and throw for 300 yards and three touchdowns. I'm only surprised at this move because reports last year were that the owner was the one pushing for Young, but he threw everyone else under the bus instead of owning up to it. I guess as I type that out, him not owning up to it is probably his self justification for allowing the move to Dalton.
