    How come Sano's "hit" wasn't recorded as an error? The ball hit Grossman's glove. Used to be an automatic error in the old days.

    Nice write-up Nash. I'm thinking the Twins will drop the opener and take the next two, if Rocco doesn't burn out the bullpen in the first game. Otherwise, "Good Night Irene".

    Agree wholeheartedly and there are numerous studies that support your instant-gratification claim. And Americans take the lead in chasing instant-gratification over slower-developing, deeper-thinking entertainment. Take American movies for example; if a movie doesn't have a couple mandatory car chases (with crashes and explosions), three or four bloody shoot-outs, a dozen chicken-fighting (martial arts) scenes and an exposed breast or two (hopefully two) it's not a hit at the box office. Plots are optional and often get in the way. Compare that to plot-driven movies (you might have to go overseas to find one) that require their audiences to watch for subtleties and analyze what's happening in order to fully appreciate the climatic ending. In other words, the audience had to "work for gratification". Sports-wise its like the difference between NBA and MLB. Numerous studies have pointed to the advent of video games and falling IQs (IQs in general have been declining since the 1970's) as culprits behind this shift towards instant-gratification over strategic thinking. But whatever the cause, I think you're right, baseball as it exists today is probably doomed. My guess is that it will more closely resemble a home run derby by the end of the decade. Can't get any more "instant" than that. However if we want to prevent that transition from happening and fail to come up with a solution in the next few years, by the end of the decade we'll be too dumb to fix baseball, or anything else for that matter.     I just watched the video of Gordon throwing out the runner from centerfield... what was that about Gordon not having the arm to play short? Still baffled.

    True, but wasn't Dougie also mentioned as a replacement for Molitor, who Falvey canned supposedly because he couldn't relate to young players and Dougie had great success with the Twins A team that had Polanco, Sano and a couple other young future Twins on it, all of whom voiced support for Dougie?

    Biggest mistake this FO ever made was going with Rocco instead of Dougie. Said it then, and it's proving itself to be true day after day. Might be one of the few times my opinion has been proven correct. That alone makes it noteworthy.

    I agree that TD produces enough terrible opinions (myself included) without going outside the realm, but I don't get the general umbrage over this outside opinion. Yeah, it's rather short-sighted and out there in a galaxy far, far away, but it does make you think; is there someway to keep Buxton in the game without making him wear armor? Or by making him "play" only through a video game console? Or is the article an attempt to stimulate "out-of-the-box" thinking? Little play on words there... you know, like keep Buxton in a box so he doesn't get hurt... get it? That's my terrible opinion for the day. I'll have a new one tomorrow. I have a quota.

    I'm not enamored about this positional flexibility stuff. These players are "professionals". That means they're experts in their field, not jacks-of-all-trades. Know any surgeons that don't specialize in one area? You know, a heart surgeon doing knee surgery one week, kidney transplants the next day? No, they focus on one area, learn all they can about it, and practice, practice until they can't get it wrong. Find the best position for each player and keep them there.

    "Exposing" Sano will take a big trench coat, but I believe other teams won't even want to take a look.

    Repainting the back deck every spring. Repainting the same deck every fall. Putting the paint dealer's kid through college. Joyfully watching the snow melt from the grassy yard, only having to watch where you step due to all the turds the deer deposited all winter long while chewing off your arborvitaes, maple saplings and Honeycrisp apple trees. Taking the snow plow off the tractor in late March, putting it back on the tractor in April, after spending two days trying to remember where you put the pins necessary to mount the blade so you wouldn't lose them, by which time the April snow has melted. Watching your wife shake her head while you look for the missing pins and telling you the snow will be melted before you get the damn plow back on the tractor. An empty bottle of Jameson.

    Ironic that a sport criticized today as slow and pedantic was played in Sleepy Hollow, home of Rip Van Winkle. Oh, and the Headless Horseman? Perhaps a reference to the baseball commissioner? One cannot help ponder these things...

    I've consulted my crystal ball (an upended empty bottle of Grain Belt) to answer this question and here's what I see: Second week of the season Buxton will run full steam into the centerfield fence and be implanted so deep they'll have to cut him out of the padding with a DeWalt sawzall; out for the season. Buck, once he recovers, will be traded to the Little Sisters of the Poor because, you know, the sisters have a hole in their lineup. Correa will collide full-on with Polanco on a pick-off throw from Sanchez behind the plate, breaking both players', noses, clavicles and gold chains; both players out for the season, the chains converted into gold teeth and implanted in a rap singer. Because of the errant throw, Sanchez will be traded to the White Sox for a couple of used baseballs in the hopes that he will do the same thing to the Sox. However, once in a Sox uniform he'll set the record for the most consecutive home runs for a season and top out around 80. Sano will strike out so many times Rocco will just throw out a white towel every time the big man is due up. But then one day he consults the spreadsheets, holds a finger up to test the wind from the front office, and sends the big man up to the plate. He swings at the first pitch, low and away, misses by a foot, the bat slips out of his hand, bounces off the pitcher's head, beans the third baseman, ricochet's into the stands and KO's Wally the Beerman, touching off a riot for the scattered Linenekugels, which nobody will drink unless it's stolen or given away for free. Sano gets arrested for assault and bat-trio and does time in the Hennepin county slammer where he acquires 76 tattoos and a trombone and eventually takes over Cell Block 13 where everyone calls him "Whiffer". There it is, straight from the bottle. I'll take the over.

    See ball, hit ball. See ball, catch ball. See glove, throw ball. Pretty much the same from high school through major league. Baseball diamonds are similar, basic rules are similar. You could take a 13 year-old kid playing street ball and throw him into a game at any level and he'll know what to do. The basic aspects of the game aren't rocket science, it's the talent level (inherited) and the mental ability and willingness to learn and adjust that separates the different levels of play.

    The only way we'll find out if the young guys in the pitching pipeline are going to make it in the Bigs is to give them a shot in the Bigs. "Saving" their arms by keeping them in the minors too long and holding down their innings pitched doesn't prove anything. Forget the reclamation projects. Ain't no future in the past.

    A start is a start. There's no extra runs, or wins, awarded for Opening Day. 161 games later hardly anyone will remember who pitched and who won. Now if we want to talk about the last game that decides an invite to the play-offs, or clinches a shot at the World Series, or wins the World Series... then I'll get excited about who's pitching.
