    I'm on the same boat. I do feel that this team improved over the winter, but I see last years team to be more like they were for the 5 months of the season not being August - an average team in a weak division that will beat up on poorer teams and get clobbered by the true playoff contenders. I think they still fit that description before the season as well as now. The WC game showed just how far this team still really needed to go. I think they took some steps and then hedged their bets on the young guys making a significant stride forward. Most of that hasn't panned out yet. I still think the potential is there, but it's hard to get past how inept they've been so far this season. I'm still hopeful that as things normalize that the team will normalize, but it's getting harder and harder to hang on to that thought process.

    I don't fault the twins for trading Hicks either. They dealt from a position of depth for a position of need.

    I agree that they're a better team than last year. However, I think they're still firmly in the "beat up the bad teams, flounder against true playoff teams" camp like they were last year. I'd love to be wrong and I think the roster has the potential to make a big jump, but that'll take some pretty big jumps by individual players like Kepler and Buxton and a full season of Sano's first half of last year. Berrios appears to be making that jump, I'm not convinced that the other three are. I do like what I'm seeing from Kepler though.

    No doubt that most, myself included, would take a +.500 record heading into May. I'm not even trying to suggest that this team is bad. I certainly didn't expect an ugly sweep at the hands of the Rays, that is for sure. But I also don't expect to go into NY and split a series against the Yankees either. Just as I did prior to spring training, I think this team will generally beat up on bad teams and mostly flounder against true playoff contenders. Over the long haul, this team is as bad as what we saw over the weekend, but they're not as good as they were against Houston either. It's still April, I'm not panicking. I am wanting to see the team start to sort itself out though.

    I'm not sure who's decision it was to start Hughes today in front of the Yankees series, but it should have been expected that it'd be a short start, taxing the bullpen in a game before they head to NY where the bullpen should be expected to get plenty of work. Bumping Odorizzi up would have been my preference if for no other reason than to try to save the pen. Maybe they make a move and bring up Duffey and decide to quit hiding Kinley. I can at least understand that approach. Grossman batting in the middle of the order is a complete joke. Having a hitter that is struggling as bad as Grossman is in the middle of the order is amateur hour. Following that logic, I'm half surprised that we didn't see a Grossman/Morrison 3/4 combo. Meanwhile Kepler is on fire and hitting 7th? Neat. This series isn't on Molitor, but decisions like that most certainly are and they didn't help circumstances.

    The problem with your first paragraph is that this was a winnable series and they pissed two of the games away and got slaughtered in the other. You're right that assuming a split in NYC and a good series against the Reds and the outlook is different. However, if they play like they did this weekend in NY, a split is a pipe dream. They need to pitch competently in that band box to have a chance.

    I still wish that Molitor would allow the kid to hit against lefties in key spots. I understand the why, I just don't agree with the decision. Show some confidence in the kid and see where it takes you.

    I think what's impressed me most about Berrios this year is his efficiency. He's going deep into games while striking guys out. Obviously only walking one guy (also very impressive) helps that, but he's not wasting pitches like guys like Gibson do routinely. He's definitely the guy I hope the other top rotation prospects in the minors are watching very closely. Pitching with confidence, in rhythm, with a plan and without fear is a thing of beauty. It's an absolute pleasure to watch guys like that pitch. Something that we've only seen from opponents around these parts for quite a while.
