  1. That seems really wasteful...and I'm not even a beer guy. Plus, wouldn't it make more sense to pour it on White Sox or Yankees fans?
  2. I feel like I'm still holding my breath with this team. I'm not sure what to make of them. I guess that really shouldn't be a surprise 10 games in, but I haven't really been able to see a hint of a what this team's identity is. There are things that I like and things I don't like at all. The offense is making me nervous with its inability to get runners in and the bullpen scares me. I don't like that Molitor has to hide two guys in the bullpen. I love the fight shown in the team. As a Molitor critic, that is one thing I give him a lot of credit for; his teams do not give up. They'll fight to the end and that will always serve a team and it's fans well. The rotation seems to have improved, but not enough to make a serious jump forward. I like that this team has held up well against some really hot teams so far this season. Short story long is that I guess that I'm still trying to figure this team out. Though, in fairness, I think the team is still doing the same thing. It's April, plenty of baseball remaining.
  3. Everyone deals with different conditions differently. Whether it be 100 degrees and humid or 28 degrees and frigid or 65 and raining, people are going to react and deal with it differently. I'm not ready to cut anybody over the play over the first two weeks, but to give guys an out because it's cold is silly. Do you give guys an out if it's blistering hot in August? Both teams are playing in it and the team that deals with it better is most often the winner. Part of being a professional in any walk of life is being put in spots where you won't be comfortable and still being able to perform your job. Part of having an occupation that works outdoors is that you have to deal with the weather.
  4. Agreed. The issue that I have with the cold weather excuses is that both teams are playing in the same conditions.
  5. To me, catching is one of those things that very few are going to be good at being a two-way player. By nature, the defensive aspects of the game take so much time to do well. Not just the physical, but the mental as well in order to truly be a good defensive catcher. Between knowing the staff and knowing tendencies of opposing batters, there is a lot of prep to it. Sure, the coaching and stats staff help with some of that, but to be able to call a game well with a variety of pitchers with a variety of pitches isn't just something that is learned over night. That takes away time from working in the cage. On top of all of that, there is a physical toll that playing the position presents. Guys that can play average and above defense and still hold their own with the bat are a relatively rare breed. I think there's a reason for that. I'll take a defensive minded catcher over an offensive minded catcher any day. That position is too important defensively to be able to get by with a poor defensive catcher and expect to win consistently.
  6. And my afternoon has been way to long for it...
  7. Great article and a nice way to help kill a Friday afternoon! Now I might have to go find me some substandard coffee to get me through the rest of it.
  8. Hold on now, my dad's got to get partial credit! He looked at the scoreboard, saw that Garver was 0'fer and said, he's due! Section 114, row 19.
  9. Today was a good day. Home opener makes it a good day one way or another.
  10. Congrats Tom! I always enjoy reading your articles and the post game recaps quickly because a daily read.
  11. I think the absence of Polanco hurts the offense more as a table setter. I think that aspect is harder to replace on the roster right now. Depth is certainly an issue, but getting on base for the big guys isn't always a strong suit of this lineup.
  12. Yup, there has been. That's not what I was trying to imply, but that is what I typed so that is fair. My point was that many of the high hype players don't live up to it. They may be quality players, but just don't live up to the hype. That's not meant as a shot, just pointing out that the hype is a bit unfair to begin with.
  13. Or basically anyone not named Ichiro...
  14. I agree with you on Mejia, but if this is the problem that this team has I'll take that any day. That's a good problem and a good sign of the state of the franchise. That's a long way from where this franchise was not so long ago.
  15. If those guys have to force their way in, that's a great sign. I'd take that for sure.
  16. I tend to agree. The hype around these foreign stars gets pretty absurd. It seems too often that these guys simply can't live up to it. That's unfortunate. I can't imagine that playing in LA will help matters.
  17. I think I would have preferred Cobb based solely on the AL/NL factor, but I really like what the FO is showing us. No single move is all that exciting, but as a group they've been solid. They've improved the roster while still allowing flexibility for prospects to come up a make their mark. It's an encouraging sign for sure.
  18. My thoughts exactly. From a FO standpoint, I think the decision is simple. Considering the economics of a long term deal coupled with who they have coming down the pipe, a qualifying offer is about what they should do. I like him as a player and I think he brings some hard to replace things to the table, but a mid-market team has no business offering a 3+ year deal to a backside of prime player. I'd rather let a player go a year to soon than a year too late.
  19. They used to give away magnet schedules for the longest time. Now they give away hoodies and every season I get irate about not having my magnet schedule. A magnet schedule just seems like no brainer marketing to me. On the very first day of the season the team says, "Here is the rest of our schedule! Check it out and plan to visit the ballpark again!" Nowadays, the opener sells out and there is a sharp drop off in attendance after that. They now give them out during the second home series after that attendance has already dropped off. Seems like a missed opportunity to me. I freely admit that I have an irrational anger towards this issue. Edit: Kind of ninja'd by Bonnes...
  20. I'm tired of the arrow already, but I'll definitely take what precedes it.
  21. The mods here are wonderful. They're an obvious presence without being overbearing. It is that reason that I keep coming here. Thank you!
  22. I like these moves, but I'm not getting all that excited yet. I think these types of moves need to be made as part of the larger picture, but before I get overly excited about anything I need to see some improvement to the MLB roster or near ready guys that can contribute in 2018. This is a step in the right direction and I really like the shrewd moves with the international money for prospects, but I still need to see more. I am encouraged though.
  23. There really isn't much of a reason not to at least see what's out there, but they don't need to deal him. Even if they do, it needs to be the right deal and one of several others. Just like with Dozier last offseason, it can't be the only deal. There has to be other moves/signings to help build the major league squad and the upper minors. All that said, I'm a firm believer that it's better to deal a guy a year too early than it is to deal him a year too late. The previous regime did the latter constantly and it hurt the franchise in the long run. Dealing Santana now is not a sign of perpetual rebuilding. If last years playoffs should have told people anything, it's that this team still has a long way to go to catch up to the real contenders. Some of that will be organic growth from within, some of it will have to come from elsewhere. The only guys that should be near off limits would be the young core four. Beyond that, I'd be listening. Just because you listen, it doesn't mean that you have to make a deal. At this point in time though, I think they would be more prudent to hold on to him until at least the deadline.
  24. Vargas is one of those guys that got messed around with too much, yet didn't really take advantage of the opportunities that he did get. I think I'd be more interested in protecting one of the prospects than endure another year of mismanaging his playing time and squandered opportunities.
