  1. Someone should write a book on the history of baseball in the Twin Cities.
  2. For those of us who have fond memories of Tovar: http://www.startribune.com/sports/96934744.html A few excerpts: "As the starting Twins pitcher, he faced four batters, getting Bert Campaneris and Sal Bando on pop fouls, walking Danny Carter, and striking out Reggie Jackson on a screwball. Campaneris is the other major leaguer who has played all nine positions. Tovar delighted the crowd of 11,340 with double and triple pumps. His fancy motion cost him a balk call with a man on base, but his earned run average of 0.00 is the lowest in Twins history." "Tovar was equally outstanding offensively, where he had a single, scored the Twins' first run and stole his 33rd base, a team record." BTW, the Twins won the game 2 to 1 and rewarded Tovar with a color TV.
  3. Seth, is there anything that we can do to try to influence this?
  4. Who votes on the Twins HOF? Maybe we could influence them for next year?
  5. I think that they are both deserving. But could Mack play all 9 positions in one game? Mack is deserving, but Tovar was almost magical in that one game. I will start a petition for Mack if you will start one for Tovar. The Tovar fans are dying off and it would brighten our lives if Tovar made it.
  6. With season ticket sales down, it seems to me that not honoring Tovar is a huge mistake. Tovar is one of my all-time favorite players and I think that he should be honored before more of his fans get too old (or dead) to celebrate his contributions, including playing all 9 positions in one game.
  7. Thanks for posting this, Secondary User. I hope that we see a lot more from you as time passes.
  8. Anyone who is not reading RB's game thread introductions is missing one of the best parts of TD. No matter how badly the Twins are playing and how miserable your day might be, RB always provides something to smile about, along with occasional pearls of wisdom.
  9. Moderator note -- finally Ryan does something that calms the waters.
  10. Moderator note -- please make a greater effort to be respectful of people who have different point of view. We are carefully monitoring this thread to keep it cordial.
  11. Here is an article by someone who seems independent. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/24860239/torii-hunter-follows-heart-back-to-minnesota-agrees-to-one-year-deal-with-twins The conclusion resonates with what some of us seem to be thinking: "But the signing isn't about on-field value. This is about Hunter being happy and about the Twins bringing back a fan favorite for what is likely the final stage of his career. And you know what? That is pretty darn cool. It doesn't happen often enough in this ultra-competitive era of MLB."
  12. Moderator note -- we are allowing some leeway here, but please keep it civil.
  13. I am putting four of these in the mail today and am going to get my wife to sign one tonight. If you are participating, please feel free to post about it here. Also, anyone who can get five of these in the mail before the deadline will qualify as a "TD Member of the Month". I am not sure what that means, but it must be good.
  14. Tony O. deserves this. I am going to print out several of these postcards, add the postage and get friends to sign them.
  15. My preference would be the Cuban guy, Yasmany Tomas if the Twins' scouts like him. He's risky, but some of the Cuban players have surprised to the upside and I think that his signing would boost ticket sales, especially if he pans out. I would also suggest that TR call Arcia and offer him incentives to come to spring training a couple of weeks early to work on his defense. I don't know what this might cost, but it would be pocket change compared with any of the free agents.
  16. There are some interesting and creative ideas here. My main quibble would be Santana in AAA. Odds seem high that Santana may need more time in AAA, but it seems to me that he should continue in the majors until he fails, at which point he can go to AAA to work on whatever flaws made him fail. I also think that Santana's defense in CF could improve with practice and if Molly can figure out that Santana needs to play about 10 feet deeper.
  17. I would hope that at the very least TR will have a face to face meeting with Maddon. It seems to me that Maddon's insights about the Twins could be valuable to TR. I also think that $5-7 million per year would be a good business decision, considering the morale boost for the fans and the players, plus making the Twins more attractive to free agents. The Twins could also offer Maddon an option to move up to the GM spot when TR retires, which is something that the Cubs cannot offer. Maybe the combined deal (manager then general manager) could be 6 or 7 years, which might also give an edge against the Cubs? It's painful to watch games and even more painful to go to the ballpark when the team is losing 90+ games per year. We fans need more reason to hope for better days. The Twins could spend big on free agents this offseason and we can argue about that until April, but Maddon seems to me to be far closer to a sure thing than any free agent, and it would be a business mistake not to make a serious bid for his services.
  18. I was hoping that stringer would move on to the pitchers and he has not disappointed. I don't know how stringer finds the time to do such a great job on these articles. I do know that every one of them has been excellent and has promoted interesting discussion. Thanks, stringer.
  19. If gambling were legal I would take that bet. It seems to me that Hughes will be treated as the ace until someone else earns that role. I can see Nolasco getting the opening day start only if Hughes is injured.
  20. I heard TR say that in the conference call and now it seems that he may be backtracking. I also heard TR mention that $100 million should be enough. I would like to see the Twins focus on one quality acquisition, not spread the money around. We fans need something to be excited about.
  21. I would hope that he works on two things during the offseason -- fielding and hitting curveballs. With enough practice, I believe that he could become a plus outfielder, but maybe he would play better in LF than RF. I also believe that he needs to take a lot of live BP with pitchers who have decent curveballs.
  22. I always research charities on Charity Navigator before writing a significant check. Here is their report on this one: http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=7032#.VCW4ivldV1Y
  23. That video is worth watching!!! I especially liked the ending. I wonder if there was a problem finding a shirt that was big enough for Vargas? For those of us who don't tweet, you might want to post a link to where we can send a check.
  24. This is a very interesting article that I am sure will provoke some interesting responses. Thanks, SD.
