  1. This article made me feel good. It's great to hear that Twins' prospects are so active in helping their communities.
  2. Thanks Parker. You do an amazing job explaining things.
  3. Nick, as you have stated, a player's defense can improve, as in the case of Plouffe. My theory is that the best way to teach defense is repetition in a simulated game situation and that some players need more repetition than others. When I coached little league, we had a kid from Russia on the team. The kid had never touched a baseball and did not possess any skill whatsoever in catching a ball, even a tennis ball. We spent many hours throwing the ball then hitting the ball to this kid and a few others. By the end of the year, the kid was able to make a game winning catch. I wonder how much time Arcia spends during the off season shagging balls hit by a live hitter. If Arcia worked diligently with good coaches to improve his defense, it seems to me that he could become a solid defender. He is not slow and his arm seems strong. With enough practice in simulated game situations, it seems to me that Arcia could learn to take better routes to the ball and make better throws. Maybe what works in little league stops applying at some level? My theory is that the best way to teach defense is repetition in a simulated game situation and that some players need more repetition than others, but improvement is always possible with repetition. Am I just dreaming, or could Arcia get a lot better with an optimum training regime?
  4. Moderator note -- please be more respectful of each other in this thread.
  5. Maybe the 9th round is the lucky round? Great article.
  6. Thanks, Seth. I am wondering which, if any, of these prospects has significant potential to be an ace or a #2.
  7. Congratulations to the Miracle, and thanks to Seth for the article. I look forward to seeing the prospect descriptions for these players in this winter's handbook.
  8. We can argue about who deserves blame There are lots of candidates -- * the coaches * the players * the pitching staff * the defense * the minor league coaches * the scouts * the front office It seems to me that we will never have enough data to apportion the blame with any degree of accuracy. I believe that this debate is interesting, but think that people should keep in mind that there are alternative explanations for every deficiency in the team's performance.
  9. Thanks for posting this. I love the fact that so many prospects are getting playoff experience, and winning. Hopefully some of this will gradually bubble up to the MLB level.
  10. I love these articles where the videos illustrate the analysis. Well done.
  11. This has been an interesting thread, and people have been frank yet respectful. Nick, you have done a great job of keeping this interesting and you have received some great analysis from our members. I tend to agree with those who would like to see the Twins go for an ace and a LF. Most of us seem to view these positions as areas of need, but some people have expressed concern about the likelihood that an ace free agent would want to play for a 90+ loss team. I wonder if Scherzer might appreciate the benefits of playing at Target Field and the general ambiance of the Twin Cities. Maybe Scherzer appreciates the devotion/class of Twins fans that he sees when he plays at Target Field and maybe he would like to be the undisputed leader of a pitching staff. Maybe Scherzer would like to be part of a rebuilding effort that will soon include Buxton, Sano etc. If the Twins were to offer top dollar, it seems like Scherzer might logically conclude that playing for the Twins could be his best move.
  12. Interesting article, Nick. Do you see Berrios as a potential ace?
  13. I would guess that Polanco would be thrilled with a call up, even if he were told up front that he might not play at all. Wouldn't this give him a month of MLB minimum salary and an opportunity to work out with the team every day? Polanco may or may not turn out to be a MLB regular. But it seems to me that a call up would be a cost efficient way to show appreciation for his good performance so far and possibly to slightly improve his skills.
  14. Moderator note -- let's not stray into making this a personal discussion between two posters.
  15. Question -- would it be unfair to the contenders if Gardy used 3 callups in every game to be consistent?
  16. Because this is a lost season, I would like to see as many September callups as possible. As a fan, this will give me more reason to watch games, and more hope that another prospect will surprise us like Santana and Vargas. Mauer, Plouffe, Dozier, Escobar and Suzuki could benefit from some days off and I think that it would be fun to watch some prospects take their shots. It also makes sense to me that rewarding achievement at AA and AAA sends a positive message to all the minor league prospects -- work hard and you will get a shot. What would be lost by calling up a few of the more deserving prospects?
  17. Moderator note -- I just deleted about 5 posts from this thread. The problem began when one poster characterized another poster's opinion as "a lie". That was a clear violation of TD policy and that poster has been issued an infraction point. I also deleted related posts, because they were part of a digression from the baseball discussion. I appreciate everyone's passion here, but people need to remember that we all have the same dream -- a winning team. We may disagree about how to get there, but we share a common mania. TD is a place for RESPECTFUL discussion. All posters must give respect to fellow Twins fans, even when they feel that the other person is clearly wrong. Feel free to disagree and debate, but make the effort to to follow our policy, which can be found in the TwinsCentric forum.
  18. This is interesting and informative. I look forward to you posting more.
  19. I used Ticket King a few weeks ago and am very satisfied with their pricing and service. With the TD discount, it's a good bargain.
  20. I am using Chrome and the TD logo at the top left tends to block the text when I am reading forums and PMs. Is anyone else experiencing this?
  21. Nice blog, tobi, and some thoughtful responses. I still dream of Mauer being tried out at 3B.
  22. What about his defense?
  23. Cardinals fan, Bark? Really? I love you like a brother my friend, and Veronica is like a sister to me, and it hurts me to think that you could root for a team that has a red bird on their jersey. Surely you realize that cardinals are the flying rats of the bird kingdom and have been known to eat worms after a rainstorm. As for John's head versus heart dilemma, I feel your pain. Justin has long been one of my favorite players and I share your feeling that this seems like a move that was designed mainly to put $2.6 million into the Pohlad coffers. Then I wonder if maybe that $2.6 million may eventually go towards a free agent or something else that will help going forward. Like many issues that we are seeing, it may take months to make an accurate assessment. If the PTBNL turns out well and/or the Twins sign Morneau next year then my heart will feel better. Otherwise, I will feel that this was a cheesy move to save money by disrespecting a player who has made huge contributions and disrespecting the fans by dishonoring a player who has earned their appreciation.
  24. I wonder how much credit the Marlins might give for cash. If there was some way for the Twins to throw in $10 million or more of cash, maybe the Marlins might consider lesser prospects?
