  1. Pittsburgh's bullpen coach Euclides Rojas should be considered. He is a former pitcher on the Cuban national team. After literally arriving on a raft, he played a few seasons for the Marlins in the minors. In 1997 he became an instructor in the Marlins system. He moved to the Red Sox as the bullpen coach in their successful 2003-2004 seasons and then was the Pirates Latin American pitching coordinator. In 2011, he took his current position as Pirates bullpen coach. He is 47 years old and will be a major league pitching coach before he is done. http://triblive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/pirates/s_743969.html#axzz3HvLRxFjW
  2. I am not sure about the HAS to be. It is not uncommon to play CF on the minors. Oswaldo Arcia played CF through Elizabethton. Until this season, Rosario had the same experience. I don't doubt that Rosario will have more range than Arcia though. His bat in a corner is the bigger question. He should do enough good things in LF to be at least close to average with the glove. Maybe he will be similar to Schafer who has the speed but poor instincts negate that speed. The Twins won't know if Rosario can be a solution in LF unless he gets a long look. That look needs to start early this season. It can't happen if they fill the spot with a decline phase veteran as a short term patch.
  3. Were stuck with Nolasco. I'd rather Hughes, Gibson, May and Meyer over short term fixes. They need longer term solutions. The Twins can't have another year near the bottom in innings from 25 year olds and younger. Sign big or sign no one.
  4. The Royals threw 2287 97+ fastballs in 2014. The Twins threw 1. They need some fire in the pen. Burton is gone. Swarzak and Duensing should go. Thielbar and Fien have an option left. That flexibility should save their spot on the 40 but not the 25.
  5. Love to see Oliva and Kaat in the Hall of Fame. Both have been great ambassadors for the game. Oliva for his greatness before injury. Kaat for his longevity, short peak and glove. Both would be respected additions whose story can be held with esteem in Cooperstown.
  6. If I am Renteria, I am very motivated to prove the Cubs wrong. Would it make him a better manager?
  7. Not at all. A single pitcher may have skill to explain some difference in FIP and ERA. Buehrle would probably be among the most extreme example of out pitching his FIP. A significant difference in team data with many more innings than a single pitcher can not be explained similarly.
  8. It should be just the opposite. With a large sample it will point to a good or bad defense. With small samples it is meaningless and could be luck. The large sample takes the luck out of it. Buehrle has skills that have been demonstrated to lead to an ERA better than FIP. He pitches well with runners on base. He holds runners on well. Both lead to more stranded runners. He still puts a lot of balls in play and needs a good defense behind him.
  9. Buehrle doesn't strike out guys. Needs a good defense. He would be great with the Royals or Giants. He would have a career high ERA and BABIP with the Twins.
  10. The book should close when the control of all players involved ended. I think it closed following 2013 for Guerra and Gomez. At the time of the trade they had team control through that point. In this case, a good trade. A year of Santana (and the supplemental pick had they kept him and lost him to free agency) for 6 of Gomez. The failure was in recognizing and developing his talent.
  11. The difference between signing Burton and Fien as opposed to Kubel/Bartlett/Guerrier was their status and some age. Burton and Fien both had multiple years of team control left. They had pitched in the minors the previous year. Even if Burton had spent a chunk of the season in the minors, they still had the chance to reap benefits in the second year. Burton came in and threw great in spring training. He earned a job. If he pitched poorly, he would have started in the minors. The Twins had time with him controlling his contract through 2012. I don't think his signing can be compared to the signing of Kubel and Bartlett who were going to get a job regardless of how poorly they played in spring training. The mistake was extending him after 2012 when they had him under team control for the 2013 season. There was no need to purchase the 2014 season. I am for signing minor league free agents when they have some team control and need to perform well to earn a spot. It was clear that wasn't the case for last winter's signings.
  12. Several are saying he won't come to Minnesota. If the money is big enough, he will come. I didn't know I would have to be clear about the age. I will try again. Most people at 60 are thinking forward to retirement. Whether he stops at around 67 like LaRussa or Leyland or goes longer, in his mind he has to be thinking one big contract. So no, there isn't a retirement age. There is a peak to the opportunity. He will never be more respected. No team would be concerned about his age at 60. I think he opted out because he is aware that he is at peak value. Anyone motivated can buy high. Will the a Twins buy high?
  13. At his age, it is his last big contract before retiring or moving to front office. He goes where the money takes him. The Twins can afford him. Pay the guy.
  14. Sign big or sign no one.
  15. The Twins absolutely can not expect Pelfrey to pitch well from the pen. Throughout his career, the drop off in his performance with runners on base is significant. He would need a bullpen role where he starts an inning. He can't pitch from the stretch. That would limit a manager's ability to use the pen.
  16. This is what Twins a Daily member and Brave blogger BiggentleBen said upon his acquisition. "He's a CF in speed only at this point as his instincts in the field are terrible and simply have not gotten better. The only thing worse than his first step is his routes, so not exactly the guy you want to rely on for covering a spacious outfield. His best defensive asset is his arm. His speed does allow him to make up for his first step on quick shots, but on long runs, his poor routes often bite him, and he misses a ball most center fielders can make." He was DFA'd when the Braves acquired Bonifacio. The Atlanta Constitution Journal wrote about the upgrade in outfield defense Bonifacio would provide. Don't trust those that saw him over a long period of time? You can always look at the defensive metrics that have him in the negatives in both defensive runs saved and UZR. Is poor CF too strong? How about bad? Is below average too strong for LF? How about mediocre? He doesn't have the bat to be a platoon LF in any case. A fifth OF, great pinch runner on a team with 11 pitchers is a perfect major league role. I hope the Twins find a manager who will platoon and that 4th OF spot needs to be a solid enough hitter to merit those at bats.
  17. All three are out of options. At some point next year, each of the three will be DFA'd. I would nontender all three and look for someone else's nontender that can have the flexibility to start in the minors. They can also be nontendered and resigned to a minor league contract. Schafer did have an OK two months. They all have had OK stretches. Any projection should be based on the last three years and not two months. All three project to be fringe major leaguers.
  18. He is young. He will continue to improve. I am all for signing or trading for a top quartile outfielder. Short of that, I would prefer the at bats go to Hicks, Rosario, Buxton or Sano (with Plouffe in LF) next year..
  19. Replacing Schafer with Bonifacio would be an significant improvement. Only one set of projections are out but Schafer projects to a 615 OPS. Schafer is a poor defender in CF and below average in LF. He doesn't play IF. It isn't enough improvement though. I want them to stick with Schafer so that it is easy to bring up Rosario if he starts well. If not Rosario, then Sano and move Plouffe to LF. If not Sano, then Buxton. If not Buxton, then give Hicks another long shot. The one projection out has him improving to a .668 OPS. It is too easy to sign below average players because the other opening day choice is even worse. The player signed, though, gets far too much playing time. I am all in if they want to sign a top quartile player at any position. Barring that, they need to avoid the below average and invest in the future.
  20. Fair enough. Any plan where he is not expected to be the guy in the 7th or 8th inning is OK with me. The ability to option him gives the Twins the opportunity to let him fight for the job or fight back from AAA. Maybe the season long poor strike to rate wean be fixed. Maybe the league figured him out.
  21. Agree. Those describe the results. The xFIP and K rate project the future. Swarzak and Duensing are out of options. They need yet be nontendered. Fien has an option. He might need to start in AAA and show that his strike out skill of 2013 has returned.
  22. Twins relievers were 30th in K rate and 29th in xFIP. Describing the bullpen as below average is generous.
  23. I don't think they should count on Casey Fien. His strike out rates were off all year - not just the last few months. He can't repeat that rate as an extreme groundball pitcher. If he can't return his strike out rate to the 2013 level (from 20% to 30%), I don't think he should be on the roster.
  24. Buxton will help prevent runs better than anyone they will bring in. Bourjos? By the end of the year Buxton will be a better hitter than Bourjos and may be from day 1. While I am on the side of those that say the a Twins should not worry about service tea. I won't argue them waiting a couple weeks to get the extra year.
  25. Thanks for doing the work on Nolasco and Hughes. The one thing the Twins haven't really done is go with youth in the last three years. They are constantly signing decline phase veterans and go young later in the year. I am still waiting for them to rebuild. It might take 50 starts for May or Meyer. It might take 1000 plate appearances for a hitter. Let's do that next year.
