  1. As long as we have the attitude gap filled, who cares about the one in left center.
  2. I wonder if pairing Santana with Pinto would work. Suzuki wore down with the workload they gave him last year. They need Pinto to fit in somewhere and keep Suzuki closer to 100 starts. I would think if Pinto is going to develop into the catcher they need, it is going to be a veteran with command like Santana.
  3. Many players come up to the majors and struggle. That doesn't mean they were rushed. Arcia has shown he can hit AA/AAA pitching. He wasn't rushed. He is struggling to learn how to hit major league pitching. Hicks, on the other hand, has never dominated a level. The need for a CF rushed him and somewhere on the path he lost any power he had in his swing. I am not sure he can get it back and I am not sure he has the make up to deal with struggle. I hope Hunter can help with the make up and preparation. Hunter knows what it was to struggle when he arrived and how to work through it. If any player shows dominance at a level over a half season, moving them up is not rushing. If any of Sano, Rosario or Buxton dominate into June this year, it is time to make space and let them begin the struggle with major league pitching.
  4. I I wouldn't trade 4 years of Escobar for 2 years of Gee.
  5. In the 34 seasons since Roy Smalley was the Twins regular shortstop, Twin shortstops have had two seasons with and OPS+ above 100 (2001 and 2014). Might be a good idea to keep Escobar around. At 2B, Todd Walker (1998) was the last to have an OPS+ over 100 until Dozier did it last year. It would be good to keep him around also. These two guys and their team control are part of the solution. Any return has to be a player that comes with similar team control.
  6. I see some value in front loading. If the Twins have the payroll space now, use it. If it isn't used, it won't be used later. The contracts need to be the same value, but not the same dollars. The sum of the annual salaries in a front loaded contract would be less. The Twins are going to need to do something to top the Giants offer. Offering the same dollars and front loading the money would top the Giants offer.
  7. How much different can it be than what we have now? You have my vote. Your first order if business is get Santana.
  8. It is well documented the Orioles claimed Willingham. I said at the time and I say now, they should have let him go. The Orioles would have had to pick up the contract. If they let him go, they would have looked for a LF solution last winter. Instead they continue to seek a solution in LF this winter. Is this argument so absurd that it should not even be mentioned? My point is that they held onto Willingham when they could have given his contract away. I want them to sign Santana. I know that they will not release him if he does not pitch well. At least not until Chief is made GM.
  9. Simple. One vote for Chief as GM My worry is the current GM will hold onto these guys far too long. They had a chance to give away Willingham's contract in year two and kept him when it was clear he no longer could move in the OF. Pelfrey is still on the roster. Does anyone think Nolasco won't be in the starting rotation? I just don't trust the releasing part of the logic.
  10. This is his last big contract. He will go to the best offer. The Twins can pay big for four years. Streamer projects 1.7 WAR next year and he probably would put up something similar the following year. Expect back end of the rotation the final two years. The Twins also have to expect injury sometime in any 4 year contract of a pitcher. Let's hope it is sometime in the second two years.
  11. I don't think it is true. It can't be be. They can't be this out of touch.
  12. Bryan Price is right handed so hard to compare to Thompson. His roster flexibility gives him some value. They picked up Casey Fien at a similar point in career. Seems worth a spot on the 40.
  13. Steamer projects 284/370/403.
  14. A good thought. I thought you could also look at those selected and returned. I started looking and realized a large problem that I don't see how to get around. All of the players eligible for the rule 5 that are not picked spend that next full year in the minors. There is no way to know how they would have performed had they been stashed on the major league bench for the year before returning to the minors the next year. I would assume that it would have negatively impacted their future performance in the game.
  15. I wrote this elsewhere... Extending a very good player like Donaldon or Carpenter through 33 makes sense because they have room for decline with their career OPS+ of 125. They are likely to still be a valuable player. Plouffe has a career OPS+ of 99 at a similar spot in his career. It is much less likely that he will be a valuable player. He has little room for decline.
  16. He had 1 WAR in 2014. He had -0.6 WAR in 2013. He is projected for 0.5 WAR in 2015 He would be going for the NL to AL. He would be going from a team with a good defense to one with a bad defense. He would be going from a home park ranked 26th in park factor to one ranked 2nd in park façtor. He will be 37. I have a problem with it.
  17. I have seen Crick pitch a few times when he was in San Jose. In one game, the other team couldn't come close to solid contact. Some of the walks were a result of the batters having no chance to hit his strikes. There is so much movement. Every count went deep. He is the opposite of pitch to contact. I recall saying to my son that I would sure like to see Crick in the Twins organization. I would probably trade Plouffe for Crick, but I am skewed by the games I saw.
  18. Awful pitching. Awful defense in the OF. Awful pitch framing. Together they gave up 777 runs or 107 runs above league average and last in the AL. How many of those 107 is on the defense can be argued but is really unknown. We can probably agree that both need fixing. We probably also agree that nothing has been accomplished this winter that fixes either.
  19. He fits in somewhere around Bernie Williams who received 3.3% his first year.
  20. Phil Hughes was 6th among qualified pitchers in FIP (2.65) and 42nd (3.52) in ERA. Seems like something had a negative impact on his performance. By ratio, no qualified pitcher had a greater disparity in the ERA compared to their FIP. It is true that as long as the Twins can put together a rotation of 5 guys that put up league top 10 FIPS, they will perform well in spite of the horrific outfield defense.
  21. It will give the Twins very little leverage to get anything in return.
  22. Play Arcia in RF. Sign Rasmus and play him in CF until Buxton is ready. Release Hunter as early as June 1 if either Rosario or Buxton or Hicks are tearing it up in the minors. Otherwise platoon Hunter in LF with Schafer. Meanwhile bring in thee mid 20s failed prospects either DFA'd or as minor league free agents. Hope for a JD Martinez. Don't stop looking for a solution because you replaced your mid 30s LF with a late 30s LF.
  23. Moving Arcia to left field would be so short sighted. Rosario is not going to be RF. They desperately need a player with range in LF and they signed another DH.
  24. In my argument I almost said that if either put up san OPS+ like Carpenter or Donaldson it would be a different question. They both also started career at 26 but put up an OPS+ in the 140s in their second year. There is a whole bunch of room for decline from that level.
  25. The Yankees let Nunez go because he can't play 2B. They kept Anna and Solarte instead. In the few games Dozier missed, they moved Escobar over instead of using Nunez at 2B. He is more 3B/LF/emergency SS than true utility. I wouldn't mind if they sign him though. A trade of a Plouffe may open a temporary role. The salary might keep others from claiming when DFA'd and he can be stashed in Rochester.
