  1. Indians just added a bullpen piece today.
  2. Garver not very impressive behind the plate today. I can see why they might be reluctant to put him back there while in the pennant race. Catching is incredibly difficult and probably the most important position defensively.
  3. Still has a chance to catch Marichal. Needed 8 wins when they acquired him. I would have bet anything he couldn't get there. Needs 4 now. Probably 6 starts remaining. Very unlikely but 2 wins this week keeps the door open.
  4. https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MIN/2017-roster.shtml 39?
  5. Where would you set the over/under for combined innings from Melville and Gee? 9? Gimenez better be ready to throw. They will probably need to make some moves following game 2 to prepare for the inevitable short Gibson start on Tuesday.
  6. I hope organizationally they are not thinking about 1B in 2019. They just need to make sure they have enough good hitters. If they have enough good bats, first base will take care of itself. At some point it will be Sano but not next year and no need to plan longer out at this point.
  7. FIP relies on HR rate which stabilizes around 1320 batters faced. It is pretty useless for relievers but starters can get there in two years. xFIP relies on fly ball rate which stabilizes much quicker at 70 balls in play. This assumes however that pitchers trend to the same HR/FB rate which probably isn't correct. Comparing to a reliever's ERA is further complicated by pitchers who enter mid inning or leave mid inning where inherited runners are part of the equation. Those factors have no impact on FIP. For a starter where most of their innings are self contained, partial innings has limited impact. For a middle reliever it is significant. ERA and FIP are virtually useless for relievers. I don't think any conclusion can be drawn from comparing them.
  8. Molitor on Garver- "I don't envision catching being a big need for us right now." He added that he would comfortable playing him in LF or 1B. This must be from the feedback he is getting from the organization. I would hate to take Rosario out of the game. Take Kepler out and playing Rosario in RF with Garver in LF is a drop in defense at both corners. There are still at bats to get at DH or 1B against a lefty and a bench bat will help. I have only seen him play 1 game in LF streamed. He did not look close to Robbie Grossman level. Looked more like Sano out there. No way he can be Grossman level with only 122 innings of experience in the OF.
  9. I think the front office believes Gimenez gives them the best chance to win games. I question that assessment but I also realize that I have very limited understanding of the many difficult to measure components that a catcher brings to the game. I expect to see Garver soon. As long a chance remains for the post season, I hope that is by August 31. From listening to the interview of the recent baseball prospectus/Gleeman interview, I think they see Garver having a significant role in the organization.
  10. Polanco should have another half season and that is plenty of time for hi, to show the Twins he can hit. Nick Gordon will benefit from time in AAA and the Twins need to make sure he comes up fundamentally sound and skilled at shortstop. Escobar and Dozier have one year left on their contracts. Escobar could be moved to make room for Gordon if Polanco establishes his bat by next July. If Polanco isn't hitting, he probably is headed towards a Danny Santana career. Adrianza can continue in a utility role. He will not be blocking Gordon from coming up mid season. All five can coexist until the next trading deadline and it is quite possible the depth will be needed.
  11. Do you have a source that he didn't? It should not be a surprise that an older player with concussion symptoms is going to get days off particularly when night games are followed by day games. Molitor's thoughts on playing Mauer less this year are documented. Is it an unreasonable decision on Molitor's part that Mauer sits against Hamels instead of Martinez?
  12. Is there a source? I did read that a Molitor sat him due the tough lefty. I did not see that it was Mauer's request.
  13. I want to see the young players. I don't believe that the organization needs to see them. We certainly won't when looking at results. A month or two isn't enough sample to be meaningful, but any good starts will offer hope. It might be the false hope of Parmelee and Pinto, but hope nonetheless. There is no hope in watching Gimenez or Belisle. I want to see Garver and Curtiss. I am entertained by Colon, but there is no hope there. Maybe there is hope in Enns.
  14. My contribution to the discussion is that I value the devopmental time in the minors towards improving his catching skills. Is that not worthy of discussion? Perhaps it would be worthy of discussion if we agreed. I don't want to send Garver back next year to work on catching. His bat as a catcher will be valuable.
  15. Thanks. Encouraging. Jeff Smith also spoke of Pinto being vastly improved and how he was impressed with his work to do both (offense and defense) while managing him in AA. The did not have trackman data for Pinto in AA.
  16. What is the alternative? Is there anyone here that sees him working on catching daily? I guess I could put my trust with them assuming they have also demonstrated skill in assessing catcher defense. I am concerned that he has not been called up yet. What could be holding him back? It isn't the bat. The Twins are desperate for a right handed bat. While I believe that you can't fully learn how to hit major league pitching in AAA, I don't believe the same for defense. The Twins have had far too many players coming to the majors without being fundamentally sound at their position. In some cases, the player didn't have the talent to play the position. Garver's bat needs to be in majors. If the glove part needs more development at catcher, give him that time. If he isn't close to an average catcher when he arrives, the potential for a league average bat probably won't matter.
  17. I do want to see a Garver, but it is my interest and curiosity. The Twins see him every day. It isn't about the Twins seeing but rather developing. There is so much to learn at catcher. It is likely there are fundamentals that the Twins are pushing this year that they didn't in previous years. The most important result is that he enters next year as fundamentally sound at catcher as possible. If that means four more weeks in AAA, then they need to give him that time.
  18. Are there Ervin comps in August trades? Starters having good seasons on a below market contract. I think the difference between 1 and 2 years is huge. I only see rentals, pitchers struggling or longer term contract dumps.
  19. I get that it doesn't get you the player, but it does make you the only team in the running. The only reason not to make the claim is you don't want to take on the contract. Now that Santana only has one year left, it is a much smaller risk. If a similar pitcher were available, the Twins should make the claim and try to get a good deal.
  20. Santana will be claimed. If another team put a similar pitcher to Santana on the wire, they absolutely should claim him. No way they would find a comparable pitcher at 13 million dollars on the market this winter.
  21. Selling Kintzler and Garcia now certainly provided depth for 2018 with a chance Enns can throw meaningful innings for the 2018 Twins. Retaining Santana gives them a better starter than they could have found for 13 million. I am glad they didn't sell 2018 when they sold for this year.
  22. I missed it. Honest question - is there a link to where Dozier is directly quoted insisting on leading off?
  23. Awful base running. You have to be better when batting lead off.
