  1. That's a lot of love for Pineda and Odorizzi. Pineda hasn't started 20 games in a season since 15', he's coming off TJ, and he's already been injured during his rehab. I hope the Twins aren't relying on him as a significant contributor. Odorizzi has turned in a few good starts in his last 5 or 6 games but he's been largely the same pitcher all season. He doesn't throw enough strikes, he struggles to get through five innings, and he can't face a lineup three times through. If he's your fifth starter you live with it. Gibson has been a solid middle of the rotation arm this season, Berrios is a lock, and Romero shows promise but beyond that things are hardly settled. The goal shouldn't be to bank on the best possible outcome. This unit is far from ok.
  2. I haven't read that anybody has completely given up on the FO. It's ok to criticize the current group for their failings. I agree that moving expiring contracts at the deadline was probably the right move, but we also need to acknowledge that this FO played in a part in the Twins becoming sellers.
  3. What's best for MN at this point is moving Butler. That flies directly in the face of what Thibs needs to do to satisfy ownership and keep his job; improve the team from last season. This is why having a coach who is also the PBO is a terrible idea.
  4. Sad, but if he refuses to play with KAT then there isn't much the Wolves can do at this point.
  5. Rodgers was fighting with Alex Smith for #1 overall, then 23 teams, including the Vikings, inexplicably decided he wasn't worth a shot in the first round. GB grabbed him at 24 and stashed him for 3 years while everybody watched Favre pussyfoot around with retirement. That's talent recognition and acquisition, not luck. The Vikings have a better roster top to bottom, and it's almost entirely because their last few drafts have turned out extremely well while TT completely botched the DB situation and held strong to his belief that he could find LB and DE help in middle to late rounds. It turns out he couldn't, and GBs defense has suffered for it. Again, it's talent recognition (or lack thereof in GB) and acquisition. Players playing hurt, especially in important games, isn't unique to GB. I'm not sure what's arrogant about that.
  6. Sure, I agree with that. My point was that they opted to give Buxton's innings to somebody else. Field happens to be that guy.
  7. Johnny Field isn't playing if Buxton is up. His continued presence on the roster is a product of service time manipulation. I wouldn't characterize that as separate.
  8. Sure, and every employee wants to make more while every employer wants to pay them less. Arbitration is a negotiation process. There was no negotiation with the Buxton situation. The Twins took back a FA year from him. Not only does he stand to lose a hell of a lot more than a few thousand bucks, but there's also little he can do about it apart from filing a grievance, and good luck with that. There's a difference between being unable to come to an agreement on a raise, and an employer actively preventing you from reaching a raise. I don't think I've been overly harsh on this FO at any point during their tenure. You don't see any validity in criticizing the human element of their decision? Like I said, I agree that money matters above all else. I have 0 faith in this organization outspending other teams though. The Twins operate within the margins because they choose to. IMO the weeds matter in case.
  9. The Twins gave themselves the opportunity to manipulate his service time by mishandling him early in the season. Then they set themselves up to do it when they optioned him during his rehab assignment following his DL stint, after they rushed him back from the toe injury. If he's allowed proper time to rest and rehab the toe injury his service time never becomes an issue. IMO the idea that Buxton played himself into this situation is just scapegoating for the FO.
  10. Well, no, my point is that the decision reaches beyond Buxton. If you're working for a company; you watch a coworker get f***ed over on a bonus, and you're due to negotiate your next contract there, you don't think that situation plays any part in how you handle the upcoming negotiation? Every club fills a roster. I understand that. You're asking for evidence where neither of us can provide any. It's my opinion that a move like this leaves a sour taste in the mouths of players & agents. I can't say with any certainty how or if it affects negotiations. By that same token you can't use the fact that every teams fills an active roster as evidence that no player has ruled out particular organizations or ownership groups based on reputation/culture. It's openly agreed upon that variables like climate, business opportunities, cost of living, ect influence the decisions players make. I'm not sure why it's so controversial to think that franchise reputation/culture plays a role as well.
  11. Johnny Field Matt Belisle Chris Gimenez All of them have been terrible major league players this year. You can't tell me with a straight face that performance is what kept Buxton off an EXPANDED roster.
  12. Of course, I think that's part of the reason the "FAs don't like MN," thing is overplayed. Do you believe the Twins are a franchise willing to throw those zeroes out? I don't, and if you're a mid market club that is notorious for being cheap I don't see how adding the reputation of player manipulation is harmless. Hyperbole? We know the players Miami did sign. We have no idea who may have ruled them out. The effect on other players and agents might be more indirect, but IMO this decision directly impacts the negotiations they'll have with that group they tried to extend last offseason.
  13. You don't think players inside the Twins clubhouse and across the league, as well as agents, have paid attention to how this situation has unfolded? Can you name another instance where a player who put up 5+ bWAR the previous season and won the Platinum Glove was left off expanded rosters to stop his service clock? Kris Bryant hadn't spent a single day with the Cubs when they decided not to bring him up. Buxton has been accruing time for 3+ seasons.
  14. Agents of potential draft picks take notice. Players on the team that need to be extended (Berrios, Rosario, ect.) take notice. Players around the league, including potential FAs, take notice. The Twins are getting attention for all the wrong reasons right now. The downside to this decision goes beyond just damaging the team's relationship with Buxton.
  15. https://www.theringer.com/nba/2018/9/11/17847068/luol-deng-minnesota-timberwolves-tom-thibodeau-jimmy-butler Get hyped.... Somebody call Kirk Hinrich.
  16. 3/4 full of what though? Hope? A broad perspective has to include looking backward as well as forward. Supplementing major league talent with a stocked minor league system + money to spend was supposed to have this team currently competing, hence the "grousing." I don't believe this record is entirely indicative of the talent level on the team but I certainly understand why others are tired of being sold hope while the timeline constantly shifts.
  17. The FO only inherited Molitor for the 17' season. They signed him to a 3 year extension after that year. Whatever role he plays in this mess can't be viewed as out of the hands of this FO.
  18. That very well could be the case, and it certainly wouldn't shock me, but I do find it odd that they would've kept so many who contributed to the organization falling to that level.
  19. I'm not sure what the argument is here; Thomas wasn't good by any measure for the Twins. It's sad that Hicks is reaching his potential after leaving MN. For reference, Buxton's WAR last season is higher than Hicks has ever put up, including this season. The Twins are quite literally choosing Field over Buxton to end the season. We know it isn't about MLB performance. We know it isn't about injury or rest. We know it isn't about where either player fits into the future of this team. That doesn't leave a whole lot else to point to other than service time manipulation.
  20. Maybe? I think if the best explanation for Field's presence is "the FO knows more than us," it's safe to say the decision isn't a good one. Neither of us have to be elite talent evaluators to look at Johnny Field and know he doesn't belong on a major league roster. Do you think the current version of Buxton is the player we'll see going forward? If not, then I'd argue that giving Field those ABs comes at a great cost in terms of Buxton's development. These September games might be meaningless in terms of wins and losses but there's literally no better time for him to work on whatever it is the coaching staff wants to see. We can try to find reasons other than service time manipulation for Buxton being left off the expanded roster but in the end they're all fairly weak.
  21. Nice to see Belisle finally pushed his number of ERs ahead of his IPs. I'm not sure Austin's strikeout numbers are all that encouraging. His number of PAs with the Twins is just over half of what he had for the Yankees this season. A few more Ks while rounding out those last 50+ PAs and his K% is pretty close to the 40% mark it was at when he left NY.
  22. Off to a good start...
  23. Agreed that they should always be on the lookout for a guy like Muncy, but those innings shouldn't come at the expense of a player like Buxton. Carving out room for auditions and maintaining the major league development of your own talent aren't mutually exclusive. FWIW Field is 1-22 with 0 BB and 7 Ks. Gimenez spent the majority of the season at AAA and wasn't good there or in limited big league action. Who the hell knows why Belisle is still on a roster. The point is, you can't honestly say anybody in that trio has performed so as to earn or maintain a spot on the active roster. Nobody is disputing Buxton's own struggles here, but if 3 players, who have no future with this club, can perform as poorly as they have and still soak up September innings then it's nearly impossible to say that production is what kept Buxton off the active roster.
  24. The performance argument is a moot point when guys like Gimenez, Belisle, and Johnny Field are getting innings in actual games. Nobody is making the argument that Buxton has been a great hitter to this point, but the idea that his 18' numbers exclude him from making the expanded roster is laughable.
  25. Nobody is touting him as a silver slugger here. The point is that Reed's situation isn't even remotely similar to that of Buxton.
