I think we can appreciate a moment of honesty even if we don't agree with the sentiment. I also think if we're going after Erv based on only the context of this game we're missing his point entirely. As a fan I agreed with the sale. If I'm a player near the end of time on a MLB roster and I've watched this FO sell during a season a WC berth was achieved and then again before a glut of games with the team I'm chasing then yeah, I'm probably not happy. I don't think he's really passing the buck here. I didn't read his comments as blaming the FO or new teammates for his performance, or the Twin's record to date. I read them as him venting frustration over the timing of the sale.

We agree that the odds of him being taken in the Rule V aren't as high as him being claimed after a DFA. I just think there isn't much of a gap there. If you're going to have to protect him either way it really comes down to the risk you'll have to DFA him to make room vs. the risk he never comes back. I'd rather see him for 2 months and try to hold on than lose him over the winter and potentially never see him again. It isn't an ideal situation either way.

His chance of going in the draft probably isn't quite as high but he's almost certainly gone either way. He has to stay on the active roster, but there are plenty of bad teams with rosters that can burn a bullpen spot on him if they believe they stole something. The Twins rostered J.R. Graham; I'm sure another team can find room for a former top 5 pick. In this scenario they at least get a look at him for 2 months before making the decision whether or not to risk losing him.

He would've been eligible for the Rule V draft if he wasn't on the 40 man roster correct? In essence it's a tryout to determine whether he's worth protecting. There isn't much downside here, aside from him potentially not getting enough innings, which shouldn't be a problem over the next two months. There's no reason for the Twins not to keep him on the 40 man into the winter, and if they're absolutely unimpressed they can DFA him and they're no worse off than they would've been exposing him to the draft.

Are any of those guys better than the players they've replaced? I think that was Erv's point. I don't have an issue with the FO selling or player(s) voicing their displeasure with that direction. I'd guess his frustration has as much to do with last season's deadline as it does with this season's trades.

I'm reading this as a 40 man tryout. Hopefully he gets a fair chance to stick with the team and show whether he needs to be protected.

Exactly, I haven't seen anybody say they expected the additions to make the team worse. They all came with concerns though, which IMO played a huge role in why they were available. Those question marks are often ignored when the moves are praised but then they resurface and they're used to laude the short term aspect of the deals. It's hard for me to applaud the Twins for scooping up players destined for short term deals in what was left of a down FA market, and then, after a bulk of the concerns over the signings come to fruition, commend them for only making short term commitments. tl;dr The Twins should've been better this season. Regression by the core played the largest role, but the FO gambled on low risk/low reward FAs and they were burned. That isn't praise worthy IMO. As a side note, it worries me that they're in a position where they have more holes to fill via FA, trade, or internal options this coming offseason than the last. I know we each voiced concern about the success rate of reshuffling the deck season after season following short term commitments. Here's hoping round 2 goes a little more smoothly.

Maybe Morrison is finally on the move

Late innings might be watchable now. Enjoy the FRE Oakland; I sure didn't.

    NERDS!

Count me as another who's tired of hearing older players claim their glory days were the golden age. I very much prefer quantifiable talking points, so I'm obviously in favor of analytics. That said, I think there is a grain of truth I can mine from Werth's rant, although he didn't really allude to it. Analytics isn't without flaws, and while most will acknowledge this, it isn't always represented as such. There is still a place for "simple," or "old school," or whatever pejorative you deem fit type of baseball.

We'll have to see who's floating around on waivers....
  12. KirbyDome89
I'd let him bet on himself, then bite the bullet and sign him back as a FA if that's where it ends up. Spend some of that "financial flexibility," to audition Gibson for another year before committing to him on a long term deal.

More power to ya. Sometimes I think it'd be easier if I had the same outlook. My 2 cents: I can't lie, the vigilante in me would love to see Jeong get the same treatment she reveled in others receiving. If I advocated for that, it'd be extremely hypocritical on my part. I can take solace in mainstream media finally taking some kind of stand against the mob rather than Jeong getting what she probably deserves. Maybe now is a good time for me to start believing in karma.... Hopefully NYT holds their stance against the mob mentality irrespective of future targets. I very seriously doubt we see the response they gave had Jeong been white, or male, or of a political affiliation not considered "their own," but if this is opens some eyes then we can take something positive from the situation. Being part of a mob that calls for someone else’s firing over old comments is sort of like throwing gasoline on your neighbor’s house while it burns and expecting the fire not to reach your door. This line was great. I might change old to "almost any," but it's a perfect summation of what's going on. It's too bad that so many fail to see the error in these tactics until their own house is on fire.
  14. KirbyDome89
Is there a more "Twins," move than this?
  15. KirbyDome89
While I agree with the pushback against the mob here, I'm not convinced it's the motivating factor behind the decision.
  16. KirbyDome89
They shouldn't be at the point where they're selling by the deadline. That's the big deal.
  17. KirbyDome89
90+ if that makes it more palatable. The point was they shouldn't have been this bad.
  18. KirbyDome89
They didn't realize that Houston, NY, Boston, and Cleveland were all superior teams coming into the season? They didn't realize that they'd be fighting with LA and Seattle for a WC spot? Their own division is actually worse this year, and that's without including the Twins' miserable performance. They had the path of least resistance to that second WC spot and they pissed it down their leg. They failed because they couldn't capitalize on the weakest division in baseball and easily one of the softest schedules. It's not a big deal that this team might lose 100 games in a season they're supposed to be competing for a playoff spot? They got what they could for expiring contracts + Pressly, and for the most part that's fine, but none of those guys do much for what is currently supposed to be a window of contention. The AL Central sucked this year too, and we saw how that played out.
  19. KirbyDome89
“We believe in the players who are currently on this roster and so many others who are on the way." That "on the way," group must not include any minor league relievers. Here's to the hope that Belisle is gone when Magill is reinstated Tuesday.
  20. KirbyDome89
    Yeah I gotcha...I was exaggerating....kind of
  21. KirbyDome89
You mean this entire season right?
  22. KirbyDome89
I know you're not, and similarly I'm not saying waiver pickups never turn into anything of value. All three of those guys in that group may have options remaining if they're protected, but wouldn't it be nice to have some idea whether they're worth protecting? That's really the point. That trio + others can't really be relied on, or even considered "depth," if you don't know what you're getting. They have an opportunity right now to figure that out. IMO the innings spent on Drake are too steep of a price to pay for a guy who profiles as somebody you can audition at any time. It seems like this is much more of an indictment of the current relief group in the organization rather than actual intrigue with Drake.
  23. KirbyDome89
If it isn't part of their "vision," then somebody must have a gun to their head because they've done an awful lot of it over the last two seasons.
  24. KirbyDome89
Is that an unfair description though? He's on his fifth team this season, and it was mentioned in another thread that the Twins had passed on him at least once already earlier in the season. This FO has had no problem plucking guys off the pile and placing them on the active roster. They did it last season when the team was actually competing for a WC spot so it's hard to believe that if they were that enamored with Drake they wouldn't have picked him up earlier this season.
  25. KirbyDome89
I could argue that Drake hasn't been lights out himself since he's on his fifth team already this season. "Great," is subjective here. There's a chance none of the current relief group pans out. The point is that pitchers like Drake are a dime a dozen. While this team isn't competing it would be in their best interest to see if some of that relief group has a shot to achieve more than journeyman status before they're left unprotected.
