  1. I'm not saying it's necessarily the best look, but just like the tweets, I think the ovation is being portrayed in the worst possible light.
  2. I get the "Support out guy," aspect of it. Milwaukee is largely ignored in terms of national media. They're having a good season, and the only real attention they've received is for this mess. When you add up the deliberate timing of the twitter dump, the age of the tweets, ect. I can see how Brewer fans might get a bit defensive.
  3. How about just to make room. Unless some team really wants to gamble on Erv in July rather than August the Twins are looking at a rotation of Berrios, Gibson, Odorizzi, Erv, and Lynn for at least the next month. I'd much rather see Mejia and Romero soaking up some of those innings and Gonsalves can do the same when rosters expand if not before. Same goes for the bullpen. Curtiss, Busenitz, Moya, Reed, ect. should all be getting a look. The Twins don't need Rodney, Duke, or Belisle taking innings from those guys. It'd be nice to go into 19' having an idea of what some of these fringe 40 man players are capable of before they're slashed from the roster or drafted by other teams after being left unprotected.
  4. They did try to improve the team though. We can disagree about their aim in terms of the caliber of players targeted, and the areas addressed, but there's no doubt the group surrounding the core this season should've been better than last year. I'm not sure I'm following your point about ownership being blamed for high salary players. This team won't be competing for/in the playoffs this season, so while I'm not endorsing ownership selling and pocketing cash, I am endorsing the team trying to get what they can for players on short term deals, even if the return is a handful of lottery tickets. IMO we've reached a point where wasting innings on guys like Wilson, Belisle, ect. are doing more harm than good (assuming any good was done by using them to begin with.) That last part about team history is important. It's already been pointed out but the Twins are still middle of the pack in terms of MLB payroll, and they're very unlikely to be even that high next season. Ownership brought this FO in. Regardless of whether the results are positive or negative I'm not sure how they don't share responsibility for the outcome.
  5. True, and theoretically they're signing off on every decision made so responsibility ultimately lies with them. They could be pulling more strings than we're led to believe, and perhaps that's the way they want it to be. I didn't mean to sound like I'm absolving ownership of anything, they're the only constant over the last 7ish years of "system failure." I just meant that I have a hard time pinning the Belisle roster spot & Wilson love affair on ownership demands. I buy that the Pohlads want to wait until the last possible minute to throw up the white flag. You're spot on calling out their reluctance to commit to a rebuild/tank. That unwillingness coupled with numerous half measure moves has likely cost the team some time in terms of a competitive window. The deadline last season was a microcosm of that conservative/flawed approach. That said, I still had hope that the FO could do better than Belisle if the idea was to keep a sinking ship afloat. Who knows, maybe they're between a rock and hard place with meeting ownership demands to win now while protecting future assets and setting themselves up to build the organization as they envisioned it.
  6. I get the devil's advocate angle here, but don't the Pohlads have a reputation as a fairly hands off ownership group? Apart from keeping Molitor for the season after the FO shakeup, the only time their name is really mentioned is in regard to payroll/budget.
  7. I'm not advocating they give up on him by any means. I do think it's important to realize he's still a flawed hitter. When you pair that with Buxton's inability to stay on the field, the need for a 4th OFer capable of holding down starter innings intensifies.
  8. No starter plays 162 games and to boot the Twins consistently carry 13 pitchers, so those limited bench roles are going to see significant playing time. Ideally those large chunks of ABs would go to capable offensive players.
  9. He's always handled LHP better, that's for sure, and he's capable of putting together a professional AB, but I'd pass on feeding Grossman PAs as a DH. Still not sold on that defense either.
  10. Plausible. I have no doubt that turnover for SPs is higher due to sheer number, injuries, ineffectiveness, ect. but couldn't we also say that's a strong reason to keep pitchers with a +WAR? We're going back and forth about one question from a list so I agree, in the grand scheme the 4th OFer didn't "cost," them the season, but IMO it was one failure on a list that has started to add up.
  11. True, but he's also been awful against RHP, so the team is still dealing with him struggling to be an everyday player. Rosario is in another an entirely different class than Kepler offensively, and Grossman should be DQ'd from the convo based on his lack of defense alone.
  12. I haven't seen anybody blame the entirety of this season on the FO. It's obvious that Buxton and Sano, the expected cornerstones, are the prime culprits. However, that doesn't mean the FO gets a pass. Yes, the core of the team was intact when Falvey took over, but they've done little to build around that group, and what moves they've made have largely failed miserably. It's ok to hold them accountable for that. I'm not sure how that take is fanatical...
  13. Do you think it would've been difficult to make a trade for an OFer that aims higher than roughly replacement level? That's an honest question. They picked up a SP in Odorizzi who came with serious questions, and admittedly hasn't been great, but he's still sitting at nearly 1 WAR. He was acquired for a fringe MI prospect and I'd have to imagine finding starting pitching is more difficult than platoon OFers. I know that isn't exactly an apples to apples comparison but holding the production of Grossman/LaMarre side by side with only FA OFers kind of misses the point about what the team should have been looking to do given the very real concerns about Kepler's ability to play full time, and Buxton's ability to stay healthy.
  14. Were you comfortable heading into the season with Granite as your primary OFer off the bench? For a team that was supposed to contend, relying on a light hitting LH OFer with minimal MLB experience seems like a pretty big gamble, especially when there were/are questions about Kepler's ability to play full time. I get that he was hurt to start the year, but he's played a considerable amount of games at AAA now, and the reason he isn't with the Twins is that he hasn't been good. Maybe (likely) the shoulder isn't 100%. The fact that LaMarre made the roster kind of highlights the point I've made; the Twins weren't really prepared to handle an injury in the OF. Technically he earned a roster spot, but in reality the choices at that point were slim. We're watching Cave because the two other experiments failed. Who knows what he'll end up being, but it's too little too late. The point of entering the season with a solid backup is that in the event of injury the team doesn't have to weather a revolving door of subpar play just to find a stopgap.
  15. Belisle still on the roster is comical at this point. Silence is probably better than any answer the FO could give. What's that old saying about opening your mouth and removing all doubt?.... Questions for the FO: 1. What's the plan with the "depth," the organization has at RP? We've watched serviceable arms be tossed away, Rule V fodder forced onto the active roster, waiver wire has-beens soaking up 40 man and active spots, and meanwhile Curtiss, Moya, Busenitz ect. are still trying to stick for more than a few innings per call up. 2. What was the plan with the 4th OFer situation? Given Buxton's injury history you certainly weren't banking on him being healthy all year right? Right? 3. If you were so down on Garver as a catcher, why was he the only real backup plan in place in the event that Castro was injured? I know there are more but those three stand out at the moment...
  16. I'd add that a PBO who doesn't share the desire to play washed up vets would go a long way as well. Molitor certainly isn't blameless. He's always preferred veteran players, which was why the hire was questioned early on. Should a manager who has trouble playing younger guys be leading a team relying on youth? I'm kind of surprised at how much heat Molitor takes for the roster though.
  17. Based on the screen grabs and what little we've seen I don't think it's a stretch to assume the Tweets are teenage jokes. That doesn't mean they aren't ill conceived, but 17 year old humor isn't known for its sophistication. Do I hear people shouting "I hate gays," regularly? No, but one thing I do hear quite a bit is the use of the word gay to define something as lame. Hell, even my friends and coworkers in the community mock each other for "doing the gayest thing I've ever seen," or "being a queen." A lot of these words, phrases, quotes, memes ect. just don't carry the same weight with younger adults and adolescents, and that's being completely ignored.
  18. Not only that, but Twitter was in its infancy. I don't know if anybody at that time realized the potential the platform had for both good and bad.
  19. Just in case anybody needed another reason to avoid/delete Twitter. https://deadspin.com/serving-up-a-three-run-homer-is-somehow-only-the-second-1827676441 Can we be at least a little honest with ourselves here? Does anybody really need an apology for Tweets made 7 years ago while Hader was a 17 year old high school student? Younger kids use the N word. More than people realize, and not necessarily in a derogatory way. That doesn't mean the word should be used, but the reality is that the word has been popularized. Ditto for the use of "hoe." Honestly I've heard that word used regularly both online and in person by college aged students (female and male.) Again, not the best idea to tweet it, but a little context is important. The tweet about murder is a quote from the movie Semi-Pro. The "white power," tweet is a quote from Arrested Development. The "I hate gay people," tweet is just dumb. Pretty indefensible other than it's a stupid comment made by a 17 year old kid. Nobody likes any of the tweets, but IMO these reports labeling him has a racist, sexist, homophobic, white nationalist are purposely ignoring background info in favor of a sensational story. Not that age should matter, but at 28, I don't find this to be either shocking, or the horrible offense that some are making it out to be.
  20. A guy hits a HR and is mobbed at home by his team vs. a guy who hits a HR, stares down the pitcher, and watches the ball land in the seats. I know I don't have to explain why those aren't the same thing. Like I said, there's a point where displays of passion becomes antics. I'm not saying one is ok and another isn't. Personally, I hate pitchers (especially in the AL where they don't have to hit) throwing at hitters because their feelings are hurt. That's flat out dangerous. I'm also not going to pretend that some of these "displays of passion," from both hitters and pitchers are pure happiness.
  21. I've never seen a guy do something more over the top than hit a homer, stand at home plate and watch it, stare at the pitcher, scream, throw his bat, then start trotting in April. That isn't just a bat flip. IMO it's no better than pitchers staring down hitters, barking at them, ect. after recording an out. If you're a fan of all that then more power to you. All of it ranks pretty low on my importance meter, but I just have a hard time believing that all the antics are pure exuberance and not in any way intended to disrespect.
  22. Isn't there a point where passion becomes over the top antics, i.e. disrespectful? Also I think we're lumping a lot situations into the same category. We don't have to either condemn or condone the unwritten rules in their entirety. I think the Twins complaining about bunt singles ect. is beyond ridiculous. At the same time I can understand why Texas wasn't happy about Bautista's "passion."
  23. Eerily. I liked that they acknowledged that the FO was complicit but IMO they went a little easy on them. If Matheny was that much of a problem and the FO let it persist to the point where the team torpedoed then they're probably more responsible for the disaster.
  24. Good call on August, I didn't even think about that. If they don't move him at the end of the month maybe a contending team makes a call into August. I'm not sure Erv's return makes the July decision any easier though. If this FO decides to make a playoff push (and I'm not saying they should) then based on the expected meager returns for Lynn, Odorizzi, ect, it would seem the Twins would be better off holding onto the arms. I'm not sure the team's plans one way or another will/should rely on Erv in any capacity.
  25. Gibson is the only one in that group that I'd entertain keeping, and even then I'm not holding on too tightly. They won't get anything valuable for Lynn & Odorizzi, but they won't have to sell high draft picks to move on so thats a win right? If somebody wants to gamble on Erv before he throws a single inning in the majors this season I'm not sure how/why the Twins would say no.
