  1. I'm with you 100% on elected officials abusing trust. I'm not quite there with the voting public though. I think a large portion of the country lives a "hard," life relative to American standards. Very few, if any, voters from all SES backgrounds cast ballots that are entirely altruistic. IMO it's too harsh to toss the label of racist on individuals for being selfish, especially when the prospect of economic boon is dangled like a carrot in front of their face.
  2. Doesn't the left bare some responsibility here as well? Both terms have been bastardized and misapplied to the point where they are extreme. If confronting issues is a positive, and I agree that it is, these labels have the exact opposite aim as they're often used to shut down dialogue. I'm not certain if the self-centered policy choices you're referring to pertain to elected officials serving themselves or citizens casting votes.
  3. I think the fact the argument isn't received well is because it isn't particularly valid. If Cleveland isn't in the same universe as the elite AL teams than neither are the Twins. The logic you're using is being applied inconsistently. Cleveland has Salazar, Bauer, and Kluber for this season and next if they so choose. If they're truly not interested in trying to match the upper echelon AL teams, or even beat MN for the division title, then why not sell off some or all of those arms and hit the reset button? Their window is this season and next season barring any of the above signing extensions. It makes absolutely no sense to burn a year of their pitching staff with an eye towards a future that is anything but guaranteed.
  4. 100%, they can shed a ton of $$ in the next few years so unless they're working on extensions it makes zero sense to not push all in for this year and next 1-2 seasons. Unfortunately I think the Twins fall into the "regret not spending," category too. The two teams are like Minnesotans at a 4-way, each waiving the other through to take the division.
  5. I'm high on the positional side. If the FO had done anything to actually bolster the rotation or bullpen I'd take the over, but as it stands I'm going to say under 84.5 wins and go with 83. The bullpen looks like a disaster waiting to happen and having 2-3 starters in Perez, Odorizzi, and Pineda that won't pitch deep into games will only exacerbate the issue. That also excludes the potential reliability/productivity issues with that trio and the question of whether Gibson replicates last season. I'd love to eat crow on this one, but I just don't see how they hit upper 80s or low 90s win totals with this staff.
  6. There may not be an exact recipe to follow but it's no secret that being the more talented team is a huge advantage. It isn't abnormal that MN was bounced by NY 5 of their last 6 playoff appearances. The Twins had more high end talent in 06' but you could easily argue the Oakland roster that swept them was more solid top to bottom. Sure, anything can happen, but the playoffs aren't some coin flip where the Twins have simply had bad luck. Look, I care too. Winning the division likely means young position players take another step forward. That's important for building a team that can truly compete. That said, the post you responded to wasn't wrong in pointing out that the current roster doesn't come close to stacking up against the top tier of the AL. Honestly, it isn't even that close to a healthy Cleveland roster either.
  7. According to Schoop during a ST interview that wasn't the case. He could just be unwilling to admit it, but I'm not sure why that'd be.
  8. We saw Schoop's floor in Milwaukee and it was ugly. The Twins are taking a gamble with Cron that's similar to what they did with Morrison, so I'd hesitate to call him a clear upgrade as well. I agree that this team can and should probably be better than 78 wins, but I think we're holding MN and Cleveland to two separate standards when passing judgement. Does everything that broke right for the Twins last season continue? Is Berrios an AS again? Does Gibson turn in another career year? Does Rosario have another excellent first half? IMO it seems like we're counting on the "good," to continue while also factoring in upside being reached for the Twins; while with Cleveland the exact opposite is happening.
  9. I don't think he's lived up to expectations for anybody on this board, but that disappointment/frustration shouldn't taint the view of everything he does. Buxton was, and continues to be one of the 40 best players in the organization. The idea that there wasn't room for him when rosters expanded, and any other rationale offered up by the organization was complete nonsense. They grabbed an extra year of team control and it came at the expense of Buxton's financial future. They screwed him. Period. Buxton has given quotes where he's talked about being focused on the upcoming season, improving, being part of the team, ect. IMO he is moving forward. The only individuals who aren't "getting over it," are those trying to dredge hidden meaning from select quotes. There's way too much misplaced anger in this thread....
  10. It's that "anymore," part that's the problem here. There's a massive difference between Buxton wanting to add more of his own input into his offensive approach after much of what the Twins have done has failed, and him flat out refusing any coaching. He's said nothing to indicate that the latter is the case. There are multiple threads from last September that hashed out how Buxton was handled over the season, and the Twins decision to leave him off the expanded roster.
  11. He's saying the exact same thing he did during the interview in the OP. He's had to rephrase it because some have taken liberty with his quotes to the point where he's being labeled an uncoachable malcontent. It isn't surprising at all that a media mouth piece for the organization is doing some damage control after the Twins dropped the ball.
  12. IMO the W-L record doesn't mean much of anything over those years. All of those rosters suffered from underperformance and a lack of talent, especially on the pitching side. There are much better measures of Sano's value to this team; using the W-L record over the last 4 seasons seems a bit disingenuous.
  13. The Twins have had Sano for over 2 weeks now. If Sano truly "did nothing," other than try to let it heal for a 3 week period before reporting, then aren't the Twins equally culpable for doing the same thing up to this point? I'm as disappointed as anybody that he's starting the season this way, but I can't be upset with him because his body isn't healing as fast as we'd like.
  14. I'll never understand how anybody can criticize his comments regarding the service time manipulation. Not a single poster would feel differently if it was their money that was yanked away. As for the hitting quote, is he being defiant or just self confident? Are we really going to get on the guy for putting more trust in himself than an organization that just screwed him over financially and that has been unsuccessfully messing with his swing from the time he arrived in MN?
  15. No, likely not, but he would fill a much greater need. I think it's more likely that the bullpen will cost this team wins than the 10th man on the bench, so that's where I'm coming from with tamping down a bit of the hype surrounding the Gonzalez signing. Look, the Twins upgraded at a position. I'll always be happy about that and I'd love to see similar moves in the future. My only point was that the upgrade came at a position that was further down the list of needs, and so the gap between the production they could've expected vs. the production they can expect moving forward very likely doesn't move them to a position where they're .500 at worst.
  16. It's easier than focusing on the massive holes that haven't been addressed on the pitching side... The FO is starting to become Teflon with some of the language they're pumping out.
  17. Somewhere DaveW is laughing
  18. He's capable of playing multiple positions and he'll be the first in line to slide into a starting spot at nearly every one of them should injury or ineffectiveness occur. I'm not sure there's a better definition of utility. Yeah, he's a league average offensive player, and a clear improvement over Adrianza, but nobody is contesting that. My point was that his addition doesn't now set the floor for this team at a level above .500.
  19. We agree that he helps solidify the active roster, but IMO he doesn't cement this team as above .500. I'm with Chief on this one, he's a nice utility guy to have, and I'm glad the team made an upgrade, but I don't think he really moves the needle much in either direction. There's no doubt thats valuable, but I think his potential impact is being a bit overstated.
  20. Is it your feeling or is there something concrete to suggest that's the case?
  21. Baldelli's confidence aside, with Perez, Odorizzi, and Pineda as the 3-5 starters they may be overworked regardless.
  22. The Twins don't exactly have a sterling reputation when it comes to internally addressing or publicly reporting injuries. Would it be all that surprising if the shenanigans involved here are simply what we've already grown accustomed to with this organization?
  23. I wish the Twins would buy high second round picks from other organizations.... SD payed to acquire controllable talent; MN slashed payroll by 30M and ownership pocketed that extra 7.25M.....
  24. "There was a time when giving some fresh faces looks in relief would have made sense, but that seems like a poor plan to open a season in which you hope to compete." I might entertain some glimmer of hope that they add another arm if this team had acted in way that signaled their intention was to compete this season. Honestly, there was ample time, money, and opportunity to improve the roster, and they passed. We're a couple days away from the start of ST games, at this point I think we have to accept that this is very likely the roster moving forward. Hopefully I'm wrong, but if there's serious interest in Madsen, Warren, or Vincent I'm not sure how a deal isn't done at this point. Not that I'm particularly high on any of that trio, but what's the hold up? They found 4M for a bad back end starter in Perez....
  25. Not a single team on the list you linked decreased, or even stagnated, in value. Owners are using public tax dollars to fund private stadiums, which bump revenue and franchise value, which allow organizations to purchase either in part or whole their own cable networks. Profits can be funneled into media networks and income can be manipulated by teams controlling how much they pay themselves in "rights fees," employee salaries, ect. Organizations are also subdivided where the divisions act as separate entities and one can pay the other for services. Yes, they're making money hand over fist....
