    From the ESPN article you reference: That seems like nonsense to me. If anything, it's the committee deciding that in the era of 5-man rotations, 250 is the new 300. Jack Morris was a marginal candidate, but he's in. I would much rather see Johan and Tony O in.

    It's going to have to be the Saints, Falcons, and Steelers if the full redemption tour is going to happen. The loss to the Chiefs was before my time, so that really only leaves 1975 to be excorcised. (I'm fine with holding on to my Cowboys hate for a while longer.)

    I guess it's possible that Hughes could come into camp healthy and rediscover a couple of MPH on the fastball just by being able to throw regularly. I wouldn't bet on it unless I got some awfully long odds for it.

    I just hope Buxton doesn't forget how to hit over the offseason again, and then take another 150 AB to remember. As long as he keeps taking two steps forward for every one step back (and stops running into the walls so hard) he will be fine.

    I hope you're right. I think these tend to be that way because they intentionally over-project on playing time just to give an idea of what guys could do if given the time. The ones who stink up the joint don't come close to getting the projected playing time, while the ones who beat the projections get more. For example, Brent Rooker may very well hit .226/.288/.396, but if he does that, it won't be for 400 plate appearances Minnesota. If he comes up and hits .276/.338/.496, however, he might get those 400 trips to the plate.

    The first name that came to mind was Mickey Mantle. Then I saw your screen name. I'd say it was much easier to maintain the look of a hero before Ball Four by Jim Bouton. That was the first book to really pull back the curtain on baseball players, and after that the audience would never accept the staged account.

    There can be a fine line between success and failure as a MLB pitcher. Learning to pitch up in the zone rather than just keeping the ball low, plus an increased willingness to use the slider, could be small changes that he has been looking for over the past few years.

    Two Sport stars

    TJ surgery is for the elbow, rotator cuff is shoulder. (The popping sound is more common with the UCL in the elbow.) One other two-sport star comes to mind. Bud Grant was a marginal basketball player, but a pretty good football player. His first year with the Eagles he was a DE and led the team in sacks. His second year he switched to WR and was second in the league with 997 receiving yards. He then went to the CFL (for money) and was very good there for a few years. The what-if two-sport stars are pretty interesting as well. Winfield was a HoF baseball player, but was an outstanding basketball player as well. Elway was a HoF football player, but was also a high draft pick as a pitcher. I'm sure there were others who chose one over the other but might have been interesting if they had tried the other sport. The level of specialization required is making it more difficult to play at the highest level in multiple sports.

    I went to click like after reading that, but I had already done it earlier - we need a double-like option. I'm not that interested in Duda because I don't think he's a great fit, but I have less interest in Napoli because I think he's done.

    We want at least one Corvette. So far we just have a few Matchbox cars, mostly used with damaged parts.

    Yes, it is 47. I'm not sure if I typo'd or if I got my wires crossed between him and Johan when I wrote that. It is a 47 jersey (with the name). My next one will be a Carew jersey - 29 will never go out of style.

    The content keeps getting better every year, although my favorite was probably the first just because it was the first, it was new, and there wasn't anything like it (and there still isn't). As for the covers, here are my rankings: 1. 2014 (The whole package fits together well) 2. 2015 (Great photo of a great prospect; tidy up the graphics and it's #1 easily) 3. 2012, 2013, 2018 (tie) (Nice photos, backgrounds a bit noisy) (From 2012 on, the covers all look professionally done) 6. 2016, 2017 (tie) (Featured photos aren't nearly as good as 2015. 2016 - no action. 2017 - ugly grimace.) 8. 2011 (Better photo layout than 2010; the last of the covers that look DIY) 9. 2010 (Photos are better than no photos) (Not crazy about the square cover) 10. 2009 (We have a book, so I guess we need a cover) I have the first 9 and will have #10 as soon as it gets here. Sometimes I feel funny never having heard of a guy that makes the all-star team for some other team when I can name half the starters for the Twins AA team. Hey, I have priorities (and the handbook.)

    Have the Twins approached you to help in the bullpen yet? You have one of the major qualifications covered in a big way. Just kidding. I hope all goes well with the surgery and you have a speedy recovery. (They do shoulder replacements now?)

    I wouldn't mind a year or two for him, bullpen or rotation. I could even break out my #57 jersey again.

    That, and the fact that Kinley is presumably heathy (and pitching in the Dominican Winter League) makes this a bit more understandable. I think I would still rather use a 40-man slot on Burdi than a 25-man slot on Kinley, but it's close.

    Neither can really be Jim Hoey 2.0 until we give up an above-average MLB SS to get him (and then replace that SS with a historically bad international free agent signing.)

    Even in that case, the $8M would only be a rounding error. We would consider giving those guys $500M combined, but that $8M we spent on Pineda would make us think twice?

    Wasn't the payroll record set before the latest TV deal kicked in? For the last few years, spending would have just been in the pursuit of mediocrity, so payroll has been low, but based on the increased revenue, $130M - $150M is where they ought to be over the next few years.

    There is one big difference - Mick Jagger is still singing Satisfaction, while his baseball-playing fellow entertainers from that era have been forced give it up 30-40 years ago.

    I saw most of the Killebrew era as the Killebrew-Oliva era, and I would add Tony O to that list of greatest Twins ever (whether or not the HoF agrees.)
