  1. I think one of Esco's most valuable traits is that he's comfortable being a utility player, and doesn't take being on the bench personally. He's generally performed well in a limited role, which is really hard to do. But I'm not sure h'es the best use of the Twins' budget long term. In theory, new prospects can push for that role and hopefully perform at least to league average.
  2. I'd understand most of these comments much better if today was March 20, and not Dec. 14.
  3. I think he's a solid player, but he has some big holes in his game that the league will catch up to if he doesn't adjust.
  4. Slightly off topic, but are people convinced Judge will repeat his performance?
  5. At this point I feel like there's no way he can live up to the hype anyway.
  6. It seems unlikely if they have to then clear a 40-man spot and protect him from Rule 5. That's doubles the cost of the trade. Pure gut feeling here, but Ohtani isn't going to sign based on this contract offer anyway. While a few teams have more pool money to spend, the difference isn't significant enough. He'll go by whatever intangibles motivate him.
  7. Not that it means much, besides the odds of drafting, but 2013 #1 overall Mark Appell was also left off a 40 man.
  8. What is Polanco's ceiling? Will he ever hit 10+ HR again or was it a fluke (in a juiced ball year)?
  9. Was there a transaction with Santiago?
  10. If the Twins were really a now-or-never team I'd consider this, but I think trading all their top prospects guts the system too much. They'd be worse off on defense with Stanton in place of Kepler and worse off on pitching because they'd be out Romero and not have the spending money to add any quality FA pieces.
  11. I feel like any Miami player would take a trade to any other team, just to be free of that franchise.
  12. I'm not a fan of trading from an area of weakness to improve that same area (i.e.trading a pitcher for another pitcher, unless it's a change-of-scenery move).
  13. I'd take Santana on a short-term deal, maybe Bautista fo $1 to PH. Frazier? Zero interest.
  14. It seems that Kendrick would be more of a replacement for Adrianza since he plays (mostly) the same positions.
  15. I normally would, though weren't Perkins and Berries supplemental round picks? If it's a deep draft the decision gets harder. But, really, go for it in most cases.
  16. It could go either way, but let's keep in mind that they may have tried signing FAs in the past, but they didn't want to sign with a team that had just lost 100 games.
  17. They pick something like 20th, so I'm really not concerned. A top 10 pick would be different.
  18. It's so unpredictable. I'd be curious to know what percentage of players are actually claimed. I'd guess it's very small, but sometimes that claim can really hurt later on.
  19. When it comes to the pen, I actually prefer older pitchers. They can pitch everyday and they tend to sign shorter contracts. Most deals over 3 years go sour for pitchers, unless they're truly elite.
  20. I like this. Basically sign as much depth as they can, so they don't rush the next wave of prospects and limit how many indie-ball players appear as fourth outfielders or spot starters and long relievers during the year. Given Molitor's tendency to ride the hot hand in the bullpen, I think they should bulk up on veteran bullpen depth, where appearing 2-3 days in a row doesn't hurt their long-term development as players. I don't mind if a guy like Belisle pitches (effectively) 2-3 days in a row. It's too risky with young arms like Hildenberger.
  21. I generally wouldn't extend anyone until they enter arbitration, but I think a starting pitcher could be a wise exception.
  22. I like a few of the ideas here: Uehara, Kintzler, and others who are best in other roles but have experience when called upon. That feels like a good stopgap until someone else earns it. Don't assume a minor leaguer will move straight to that role. Has it ever happened? I keep thinking of Rondon in DET.
  23. Get 5 reliable arms in the bullpen, then worry about who pitches the 9th. While not everyone is up for the extra pressure of pitching the 9th, a proven closer is almost always an overpay. Few relievers hold down the closer title for more than a few years.
