  1. I think he's the biggest wild card in the lineup. He could go in either direction from last year.
  2. Team leaders questioned a young Morneau's maturity too. I don't remember the pitchforks coming for him. (I understand that Morneau didn't have an MLB investigation at the time, but people were saying this stuff before that news broke as well.)
  3. That's not my understanding of arbitration. I'm thinking of arbitration outside of MLB, but usually the arbitrator is the decision maker. He or she is not assisting a negotiation between two parties, but brokering a third party deal. Neither player nor team negotiates. They've traded that right to have a so-called neutral third party make the decision instead.
  4. Is preferring to negotiate instead of taking a hardline stance, "poor" negotiation? I'd argue the opposite. Refusal to negotiate isn't negotiation at all.
  5. I find this (bold) idea bizarre. Why would an agent mock an employer for preferring to reach agreements with their clients? How could that possibly be a negative. If agents previously thought the Twins' wouldn't draw a firm line, isn't that a good thing for their clients? To nitpick, I'd happily go to court if it meant I could get "a fairly small amount, just $355,000." In any economic realm, that's still a 7% difference of income, which is a pretty big deal. Though in this case, it would probably just cover agent fees for the process.
  6. The only way Vargas sticks is if the Twins trade Grossman, which could happen but I doubt it will. And then all Vargas would do is pinch hit for the catcher and in select matchups. I suspect he'll be a final day cut from the roster, then he'll spend the season bouncing through the waiver wire with more time between teams than on the field, much like Arcia did. He's a AAAA player.
  7. Exactly. And he's going to be asked about it in every city they play in this year. He might as well say it now and get it over with. Plus, his answer was basically the company line every player gives. Even if he's negotiating a new contract as we speak, this is what I'd expect to hear.
  8. In my 1986-era Apple IIe game of Micro League Baseball I'm pretty sure they only allowed 2 visits.
  9. They did cut the commercial time this year, actually.
  10. They'll probably have to do something like the NFL, where the player actually takes longer and plays up an injury to make sure they notice it. In other words: making the games longer.
  11. Have there been any signs on MLB wrapping up their investigation? I think Sano starts the season on the roster and it's closer to June when they do whatever they do. Other than that, nothing jumps out at me. Given how rosters work, I assume Aybar and Pressly have the month of April to sink or swim.
  12. While I don't like LoMo as a person, I like this as a baseball move. And that's why I'm here. Solid signing, great price, and in theory it could mean moving on from both Grossman and Vargas, which would give much better flexibility to the bench. That is, if they can trade off the pair for something with a little value. I doubt they do that though. They'll probably keep Grossman as the 4th OF even if I prefer better defense out of that role.
  13. The most important thing for any bullpen is to get 6 inning starts.
  14. The pace of baseball is the whole point of the game. Might as well just play a round robin tournament in April and get it over with instead, huh? Seriously, it's wise to not want time to balloon out of control, but a clock is a fundamental change. I fully advocate limiting time between at bats or pitches in some way, but mandated behind the scenes. I don't want penalties in baseball (and they don't speed up the game either).
  15. Hopefully this depth means Molitor won't just run the same 2 pitchers out there every single game, burning them out before the break.
  16. Ratings like this are almost completely arbitrary, invested to spur discussion rather than "prospect value." I agree with most of the other commenters. I think it reflects that the Twins have a stronger system than they did a year ago more than any other symptom. Every #1 pick has to learn to overcome struggles at some point. Hopefully Gordon is getting that out of the way now, so he can hit MLB and not look back.
  17. If nothing else, you've created a nice narrative here that makes me want to believe.
  18. Is he a better pitcher than Giminez? It sounds like it's to take his role.
  19. Super Bullpen sounds like a marketing term, not a baseball term.
  20. I think one of Esco's most valuable traits is that he's comfortable being a utility player, and doesn't take being on the bench personally. He's generally performed well in a limited role, which is really hard to do. But I'm not sure h'es the best use of the Twins' budget long term. In theory, new prospects can push for that role and hopefully perform at least to league average.
  21. I'd understand most of these comments much better if today was March 20, and not Dec. 14.
