  1. I'm all for a 26 person roster. The other rules seem...unnecessary, like rules for the sake of rules to me. As the NFL has shown, more rules tends to mean more disputes. But time will tell.
  2. Thanks for the contributions so far, but no thank you. Gibson-level production is valuable to a team over 162+ games. But to me it's worth arbitration price, not the price of a free agent contract.
  3. This feels like a very short-term, win-now move. Except I'm not sure it helps them win-now either.
  4. All position players, or is a companion piece coming (that I missed)?
  5. I'd like to see the defense improve, but I don't think moving players to new positions means that they will suddenly be better (at positions they've rarely played). I'd give the current core 1-2 more years to hopefully improve, then revisit position changes as the SS prospects hit The Show.
  6. I'm sold. As long as we end up with Sano in RF.
  7. Front-loaded deals sound good on paper, but since nobody does it, I have to assume there are more downsides. One was mentioned above. I imagine there are significant tax differences too. Not all $100 million contracts equal the same amount.
  8. I think the HR period is going to suddenly disappear soon, just like it came. With MLB thinking nobody will notice the difference. If they truly do go after a big budget free agent, they absolutely need the minor leaguers to step up. Every team needs the financial flexibility of young/cheap players.
  9. I don't see how this could affect Buxton, unless he files his own grievance and waits another 4 years for the case to be heard. At which point he'll be past arbitration anyway. Bryant and Boras filed this in 2015. While it's undeniable that teams manipulate the clock, Bryant and Buxton are very different cases. Bryant was called up 1 day later and hasn't been demoted since. Buxton has been back-and-forth since day one, and the stats in 2017 would likely back up the Twins' 2017 decision.
  10. Don't let a controllable, consistent player go until they're a free agent. $8 mil is nothing in modern MLB. That's probably what they paid Hughes last year. (No, I don't care to fact check that.) Keep him under the "there's no such thing as a bad 1-year deal" logic. If it backfires...they'll get an A lottery ticket in July and promote Rooker.
  11. Bauer is a terrible human being. Just no. 18 mil is too much for Didi. I'm intrigued about adding a SS instead of a 1B though, as it could reshape this team's defense. Polanco to 2B, Sano/Arraez/Marwin platooning 3B/1B is intriguing. Betances...maybe. 11 mil is a lot, but we have a couple years before the young core starts to become a budget problem. But I don't see him getting a 2 yr deal unless the market falls apart again.
  12. While I don't think there is another Verlander, I'm intrigued. I love a POV from a SF fan of the past few seasons.
  13. I generally agree. But Teddy Bridgewater doesn't (sticking with the Miami theme).
  14. I think Castro's future is like Suzuki's (and most league average veteran catchers). A series of 1-2 year deals. I'm curious what the Twins will do. I think Garver is a lock as a 60% starter at minimum. I also think Austudillo's future is as a utility player and 3rd catcher. It would be nice to get a defensive specialist who can hit at Castro's level and mentor Garver.
  15. I savvy manager should be able to do this without a formal schedule. A short start or injury would throw it all offline anyway. Honestly, who knows what will happen with the new rules next year. The way Rocco used Gibson at the end of the year, I could almost see a moment toward making SP bullpen sessions live action. Of course, my preference is that you just get 6-7 innings from your starter. Then it takes care of itself.
  16. That doesn't say how many games he's played at full health. As my original post said I feel like he's frequently battling nagging injuries that drag down his second half performance. He's young. I hope he learns how to condition and avoid that.
  17. Has Wheeler pitched in the post season? It seems like the other impact arms have. That experience isn't a deal breaker to me, but it's a nice perk.
  18. I like Eddie, but he hasn't stayed healthy for a full season yet, has he? He doesn't miss a lot of games, but he seems to get more nagging ailments that affect his play in the second half. Or maybe it's in my head.
  19. I oppose anything Jim Souhan supports.
  20. The whole series felt like gross overmanagement to me. The Yankees were hitting it through every shift and the pitching changes were questionable. I know many people this postseason requires a different strategy, but I'm of the view that (especially for innings 1-7), do what got you to the postseason.
  21. I hope not. I understand that finances play a role, but good teams don't just let good depth walk away. I also doubt Ehire's hit enough HR to price himself out. HR and AVG still dominate arbitration.
  22. I was thinking this at first, but with a shoulder injury I just don't know.
  23. Cron is the biggest question mark to me. I expect a defensive focused free agent catcher to replace Castro. If Cron goes, I wonder about a Marwin/Arraez/Sano/Adrianza rotation at 1B/3B and an Arraez/Gordon rotation at 2B. I think this team did so well this year because of those 10th men, Marwin and Arraez so I'd be hesitant to pencil either as an everyday starter. Somebody will get hurt and they'll become everyday at some point anyway. After watching the playoffs, I think this team needs to focus on pitching and defense with any additions. Can they upgrade from Castro or Cron in that sense without taking much of a hit offensively?
