  1. Surprised to see a 1-year deal this early in the offseason.
  2. This might be a rare article that swayed my opinion. Also, I love the rare first-person take from Seth.
  3. In another thread today (I forget which one) somebody said he'd be traded midseason. I can't even fathom that. It's obvious from the stands or TV that he's a clubhouse favorite.
  4. I think the jury is still out on any player in A-ball, by definition. Heck, the jury is still out on Polanco, who started the All-Star game at SS.
  5. I wonder how many OtherTeamDaily.com's out there are looking at Hildenberger and saying the same thing we're saying about RPs here.
  6. I hope they find an external option, but if not, there are so many ways to plug this hole. I could easily see a 1B/2B/3B rotation between Sano, Adriana, Gonzalez, Arraez, Austudillo, and maybe Gordon based on match-ups, injuries, rest, etc. where each player starts at multiple positions multiple times each week. Sano at 3B/1B 50/50 and the others filling the gaps.
  7. It's not what I would have done, but I'm not upset about it either.
  8. I love the idea of ranking prospects by floor instead of the unrealistic HoF comparisons we see in highest ceilings.
  9. Maybe the extra roster spot will make a difference, especially for frugal basement dweller teams but...I don't see how anybody can expect much of an MLB contribution from most of these players who have barely touched AA. Even Johann Santana took a few years to develop after the draft. It's asking for a huge investment from the drafting team -- an investment that hasn't given much back in the majority of draft picks.
  10. Players aren't paid during suspensions. What do you mean by protection? Like it voids the contract? I'm not sure protection would matter if the goal is win-loss records. A team might be protected financially, but when a player misses 1/3 or more of the season and the postseason, at least for fans, the loss is having a valuable player on the 26-man roster. The only protection against that is signing a player who won't miss time. The Twins saved some money in 2019 when Pineda was suspended. They also started Dobnak in game 2 in NY because of it. I don't think there's any kind of contract clause that counters that affect. (That said, I'm not opposed to signing him -- I just question if a contract could cover the most important risk elements in this situation. The only insurance is a really good farm system that's ready to play at MLB when needed or can be traded for a replacement.)
  11. While I wish the Twins' playoff luck had been better over the years, I love the idea that we could have sent both Pavano and Pineda to start against NYY in NY given their histories in that city.
  12. I'm fine with moving Sano to 1B if there's an elite replacement, but it has to be an ARod to 3B from SS situation, not a marginal upgrade. He's young and still might improve to league average -- if he does, he's far more valuable at 3B. If he doesn't improve on defense, the issue forces itself in 2021-2022. Then Lewis and others are pushing at his spot in the lineup anyway.
  13. Catchers historically move through the minors slower than other positions, don't they?
  14. I think he's built like a 10-14 HR/year player. But I also thought that of Mauer, who once hit 28 and sometimes hit 6. What do I know. This stuff is hard to predict. It's what makes it a great game.
  15. While a .220-hitting, glove-first classic back-up catcher is the least sexy signing the Twins could make, I think it makes the most sense. Get a real MLB back-up of that caliber (not a AAAA-type journeyman) on a one-year deal. Let the minor leagues that others have mentioned develop and push for that spot. There's always some kind of market for a savvy vet catcher. Even Bobby Wilson was traded.
  16. d'Arnaud is 31? It feels like he was a "prospect" so recently. The mind is odd. On the contrary, I would have guessed Bumgarner is 35.
  17. No thank you. I don't even want Wade or Turtle on the 26-man roster. They're both fine as 27th-man depth. I'm also of the philosophy that $8million is nothing in MLB money, especially on a one-year deal. Sign pitching and keep him. Why gamble when you can get a relatively sure thing at a set cost? But I won't be crestfallen if he's gone, either.
  18. fwiw, "Love Rollercoaster" is a cover, originally by Ohio Players.
  19. This is smell test, not based on data, but I don't think Perez has the control to be effective in the pen. I suppose the day of the LOOGY is over, but I still don't want to make a BP call with 2-runners on and have the next batter draw a walk.
  20. I think they have to protect anyone they sent to the AFL...otherwise, it was a showcase for other teams. That seems like a strange lack of strategy.
  21. He can turn a nice triple play.
  22. Any trade of Kepler would have to include a plan for a backup CF, given Buxton's history. I don't want Cave out there for more than 30 games.
  23. If he'd make the team I'm all for it. Based on the original post, I'm not sold he's an improvement or has that high of a ceiling. That said, the arguments I'm reading here that say "trade our prospects for a prospect...because we have too many prospects..." has me scratching my head.
