    I think this hinges on what happens in the minors this year. I can't see the team banking on a prospect if they didn't get their development time in 2020.

    I don't think Revere played much RF for the Twins, though. Wasn't that post-trade (or is my memory off)?

    I think it's a stretch to call Lewis a CF prospect at this point. Especially considering that this series didn't list Sano as a backup 3B option.

    I expect it to be Eddie's last year because the kids will be ready and that's how it works. But I worry that the team will miss his attitude almost more than his bat.

    I don't disagree with any of the premise here. It's one of the reasons I like this front office. But I'm also fascinated about how franchises continue to change. We praise Cleveland now (and we should) for their pitcher development in the 2010s. But we're also dismissing them as a competitor for 2020 -- so what happened?

    If I want to see that I'll go to a minor league game. I want to see players who are succeeding or fulfilling their potential.

    I think short-term back-up options of Sano, Gonzalez, Adrianza, and Arraez in MLB already is pretty good, actually.

    And they stuck with Rivas because, after his first season, they deemed him the heir to the position. Prospect status changes quickly. You want players in the minors pushing the big leaguers or else you're stuck with what you've got. Careers can change quickly. The Twins were also set a catcher "for years" after signing Mauer.

    [Obligatory "how does Sano look, physically" this year question.] I haven't seen the usual 13 reports...which I take as a good sign.

    I think the next development in the post-Hader and opener era will be a few specialist swingmen who start a dozen games a year and alternately pitch in high leverage situations. But like Hader and Andrew Miller before him, there will only be a few noteworthy pitchers to take a new role like that while everybody else calls it the next big thing.

    Maybe a 1-2 spin-through of a 6-man rotation in September, but otherwise I don't see it happening in modern baseball. I've said a variation of this in other position discussions, but depth is good and essential. There will be injuries, suspensions, paternity...who knows. But things happen. Without that depth you start LaMarre for half of September and Dobnak in game 2. The FO learned from those issues last year.

    I don't think he was every considered a "great prospect" outside of MN.

    I could see all 5 leaving. -Hill/Bailey are the types of pitchers you sign to 1 year deals in each year's FA market. -May has been inconsistent from year to year. Those are the players I don't lock down. -Cruz is too old to predict, though I could see him coming back on year-to-year deals. -Marwin is valuable, but Arraez, or perhaps Adrianza, Gordon or Blankenhorn take his role. -Odorizzi. We'll know what pitcher he is by the All-Star break. Extend him then or he walks because of cost. Plus, I suspect taking the QO means he's excited to test the market next year.

    To a point, the story is sometimes broken too early. But it's also up to readers to be able to discern the facts. When this broke, it was not reported that it was official. It's a reporters job to report the story (what is happening), not what happened.

    I think Avila's role is dependent on if they carry a 3rd catcher on the roster, as he's the most likely PH candidate in close games. Related, it depends how much they trust Austudillo catching in close games.

    I could be remembering this wrong, but didn't people question if Mauer was too tall to be a catcher at about the same height?

    Like any relief pitcher, Graterol just needs to forget yesterday and look forward to the next game. Could this story have been handled differently? Yes. But we'll all move on and as long as he proves himself on the mound, it will be forgotten soon. Honestly, this seems typical for a story about BOS or LA sports coverage.
