  1. Because, ultimately, what he says in February won't matter come April-October. It's just a press conference.
  2. "shutdown left-handed relief pitcher" I'm confused. Is his ceiling a LOOGY or a closer? What does this mean? A ceiling of LOOGY is, well, depressing.

    Tanking

I hate the lottery draft system and I think the TWolves are a great example of why maybe it keeps teams from tanking but it also hurts the development of the teams "deserving" top picks. I guess the real argument is how does one "deserve" their draft rank in the first place. Why mess with the classic?
  4. RP is also the one position Ryan has consistently traded for at the deadline. It seems that his philosophy is it's a position that makes sense to upgrade mid-season. I'm not saying they should ignore April-July, but that the bullpen is more fluid than many parts of the roster. If 1/4 of the roster are relievers, it seems like 1 will be on the DL at almost any given point.
  5. If they change service time rules, teams will just find a new workaround. I think MLB teams like to keep prospects in AAA for a month to acclimate them to the season as well. There's less pressure when your first game is May 1 instead of Opening Day. The season is also slightly shorter as well.
  6. Zero risk. His best bet at making the team is as a bench bat a la Rueben Sierra and that's unlikely. This isn't Bartlett, it's Zumaya or Harden.
  7. When you're right, you're right.
  8. Other than Chapman, the Reds seem to be asking for high returns on their veterans. Or at least that's my assumption, given that none have actually been moved despite the rumors.
  9. Isn't this just a natural progression of a rebuild? 1) team is terrible, minors are terrible, 40-man is full of mediocrity with guaranteed contracts 2) build low minors, 40-man stays bad/guaranteed 3) prospects rise, 40-man gets cluttered 3A) replace mediocrity with prospects in phases, inevitably there are some 40-man casualties
  10. I wouldn't consider the Jackson of the past two years.
  11. I think the writing has been on the wall for a while that it will increase. They're basically at 26-27 now, just with players on a plane between the Bigs and AAA on a daily basis anyway. I'd guess this is to reduce that travel as opposed to some real opportunity for new strategy. But I also don't like the inactive list idea at all. Why make things more confusing than they need to be.
  12. So this is interesting. Not sure what else to make of it. With speed as his biggest asset, I'm not sure pitching is the best place for him but best of luck. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/01/dodgers-sign-jordan-schafer.html
  13. Nolasco at $12mil as RP = $12mil Nolasco at $12mil as sunken cost + league minimum RP = $12mil + league minimum
  14. MLB Trade Rumors and the like have MIL asking for a lot for him.
  15. My take on the 1990s steroid era is that both pitchers and batters were juicing, so it evened out anyway. But I'm not a BWAA voter, so I don't really care. The Hall is resume padding and means nothing to me in my daily life or really in my life as a baseball fan either. It's a tourist destination and that's it. Now let's discuss how Piazza's baseball performance has been blocked out in my memory by his awful job as a commentator.
  16. Between hot/cold streaks and injuries this is a good problem to have, provided they can keep 1-2 swingmen ready to go 5 innings when needed.
  17. I don't get why people keep saying Benson has a shot at the team. What has he done in the last 4 years to show that? I'd be surprised if he makes it to AAA.
  18. In a heartbeat on a non-guaranteed deal. He hasn't pitched in 2 years, so no way on any guaranteed money. Unless he'd also be willing to pitch relief, which could make it interesting. Who knows what he has left in the tank, but he could at least be a LOOGY if he's willing.
  19. Can he still play CF?
  20. He did just have Tommy John surgery 20 months ago. Rest makes sense to me, even if he's not a pitcher.
  21. That's a first. I'd still be game to take a shot on Cliff Lee.
  22. He seems like a classic Twins signing. Not sure I'd do it on an MLB contract but maybe a one year. If you cut him you're only out cash. I'd rather they signed an 8th inning guy than a 6th inning guy who can maybe pitch later if he goes on a hot streak.
  23. If Plouffe is traded and then Park fails, then the Nishioka comparisons can be made...
