  1. I'd think Tonkin would be a candidate for low value trade/waiver too. He hasn't produced and the Twins don't seem to trust him either.
  2. This all hinges on if Park can hit MLB pitching, which is entirely unproven. I said it a month ago elsewhere, but I think best case scenario for the Twins is to put Park in AAA until he's "acclimated" to US life and pitching. It could be just April, it could be longer. Don't assume he's a cleanup hitter when he's never faced an MLB pitcher and definitely don't build your lineup around him yet. If he is, then Sano or Plouffe become talking points. Until then it just means you have insurance.
  3. I see Cotts as more of a $1.5 mil reliever. He came for virtually nothing, which while he performed well doesn't suggest he'll get much of a salary. (I have no idea what he made last year.) PS Did the Twins ever announce a PTBNL or anything for him or was it just cash?
  4. The stats are useless, not the scouting.
  5. I'm curious if this breakdown is much different than their worst teams.
  6. I don't find this suspicious at all. Their current catchers weren't good enough so they're getting rid of them in favor of new ones. I agree with Seth that a 30ish AAAA catcher is likely for depth but that's all I see on the horizon. Admittedly, most non-Winter Meetings trades seem to happen because an opportunity or circumstance changes though, not through some pre-set plan. I could also see them adding this third catcher through a 3 team trade somewhere as an extra cog instead of a main piece.
  7. I seriously can't remember, how did the Mets fare with Viola? A different era, but...
  8. On a 1-2 year deal, great. If the prospects are truly ready, they flip Span at the deadline. But why would Span want that? They already dealt him once and it seemed to annoy him. Also, he's an avg at best CF so I'm not sure he'd make up for Sano much anyway. He's reliable and a good leadoff hitter, but I don't see a fit here.
  9. The latter did bring us Sano, in a sense...but I can't disagree with this statement.
  10. I forgot somebody took on Hernandez. I thought Ortiz was cut. Anyway, all of the above mentioned where demoted to relief well before being let go.
  11. Not sure I agree with you there. That's not what happened with Ramon Ortiz, Livan Hernandez, Pelfrey, or a host of other SPs. (Position players, yes.)
  12. I assume he'd become a free agent because the Twins sell his rights, they don't rent them. Albers was a FA. for example.
  13. This post is just a PR move by the Twins to garner trade attn, right? Because it feels really hollow.
  14. If they trade Plouffe, contingent upon signing Park, I think they'll wait until the 3B free agent market has played out and teams have fewer options.
  15. I'd argue he's doing pretty well to get anything at all out of Hermann's roster spot.
  16. At this point I view Park in Rochester for a month or two like other teams do with Cuban players to acclimate. I'm sure salary+posting fee will dictate otherwise.
  17. Not an ex-Twin, but an ex-Central player: what about Cliff Lee?
  18. I don't the point in having a 2015 argument about if Radke was an ace. I do think the idea of needing an ace to win the WS is a myth. On any given day or month (for the duration of WS) anyone can be an ace. Remember when Albers had a sub-one ERA? Top tier players help, no doubt, but as Seth says: I believe only one of those teams won the WS. The recipe is to have a full 25 of above average players and get lucky at the right time. Does it help to have 25 all stars? Duh. Is it a proven recipe to success? No.
  19. IMO You don't send a player to the AFL and not protect them.
  20. I don't recall the details, but yes.
  21. Unrelated, but I wouldn't be surprised if they offer a minor league contract to Nathan too.
  22. I'd take Weiters for 1-3 years without losing a pick, but I think he has too many red flags for a risk any larger than that. Out of curiosity, when is the last time the Twins signed a (starter) free agent from the AL East? I feel like that division drives up the cost of their free agents too.
  23. I'd only look for a middle infielder if he's an annual all-star. Otherwise, roll the dice on some form of Escobar/Santana/Polanco being at least league average and, fingers crossed, maturing and getting better.
  24. I'd gamble on an A/AA prospect for him but that's about it. He's never done a whole lot at the MLB level but in a 50/50 time split would be an upgrade from most of the free agent options. Way more intrigued about Storen.
  25. He was a very good player for a time, but was also a bench player for half of his contract that he signed after hitting the free agent market. When he fell, he fell hard.
