    I can’t remeber a more encouraging opener, truly. I was waiting for the lineup to stony themselves into a boring, frustrating loss, but they did what they needed to back their starter up. I’m super happy for La Makkkkkkkkkkina, and cautiously optimistic that we may be able to close the book on one of the uglier chapters of Twins Baseball. Hope springs eternal, until it doesn’t, I suppose. Nonetheless, go Twins.

    The ‘eight digit’ contracts are a problem. No doubt about that. However, in my casual observation of the NHL this year, one thing stands out is a seemingly unprecedented glut of 20-23 year old talent. Right now 5 of the top 10 scorers are in that age range, and most of this year’s all-stars, I’d never even heard of. So, for this GM to lop off failed projects to get younger and cheaper might end up looking like a genius move when free agency explodes in a few years. I mean, there’s definitely a lockout on the horizon. But, best to be in a good position to capitalize when the dust settles.

    Greenway’s a lot of fun. Troumbly and Lawson are some pretty serious gamebreakers. Not sure how Mahtomedi earned a 1st seed, really. They’ve got very little finishing.

    Not to pile on New Ulm, but white numbers on white backs? These uniforms are awful. And Olde English typeface? Earth to New Ulm: you are neither olde nor English.

    I’m in LA but the 45 live stream is pretty good, so I plan on tuning in this year! I’ve seen all the A quarters so far. EGF is scary as hell and I’m not too sure what New Ulm is doing here, but who cares! This is probably my second, if not first, favorite sports tournament.

    Upon further review, Fiala is giving off major James Sheppard vibes so far. I think Donato will do well, but so far this year, it’s basically Coyle/Nino/Granny for cap space and Donato. Might still work out, I guess, but I’m less enthused than before.

    I always used to think Iglesias was destined for really good-ness. But, right when he started making a name for himself, guys like Correa, Lindor, Seaver, etc, kind of changed the way we think about shortstops.

    I sorta find myself thinking that this Fenton fella may be a genius. The Nino trade is still weird. BUT, the team got younger and cheaper just by giving up two (mostly) failed projects. If one of: a) Fiala and/or Donato become real valuable goal scorer(s), or he can turn this into money spent on a ‘star’ caliber FA; well, then I think he has low key had a real strong first season already.

    Schoop is for sure a better signing than Kinsler. Age alone would be one reason. Another entirely is that if you’re trying to cultivate young talent, Kinsler really doesn’t seem like a guy you want around. Remember his whole ‘playing the right way’ bit from the WBC a year or so ago? Fun does not seem like a priority for him. Discounting that as a hot take, though, he will be 37 at some point next season. Call this an unfair generalization if you must, but old people are no good at everything.

    Unfair? I guess not. But, it’s a pretty raw deal, and the fact is that millennial players/people in general don’t handle stuff like this the way someone may have ten years ago.

    I could not possibly disagree more with the initial post. He pretty surely lost time and money by not getting a month of baseball with a team that wasn’t playing for anything. Like, what are you talking about?

    I think Mauer was a star in the sort of murky, kinda nebulous post-roids, pre-body builder, millennial power stroke era. It doesn’t seem like a long time ago, but I don’t think physical training was nearly the same ten years ago. Players are way more under the microscope now for better or worse.

    Um...Matt Kemp was an all star last season. Better numbers than almost any Twin in 2018. Probably not gonna be a salary dump candidate.
