  1. It’s also about insurability on the long, pricy contract. I think that is more the issue. There is a known, surgically repaired injury that projections don’t think kindly of. I don’t think it’s anything that hampers his play right now and there is no knowing how it will progress. I think a contract of 8-10yrs is still doable, front load the first half, so you are paying for what you get; incentivize the back half to cover your risk. If Correa thinks anyone is going to give him guaranteed money to the end, I think he may be looking at a career of 1-yr, make it good, contracts
  2. You don’t know this. That is your speculation. Donaldson came here because, lo and behold, we offered the most. We don’t know and cannot know for certain what FAs will do when we don’t offer competitive contracts. Just because you have a low opinion of players wanting to play in Minnesota doesn’t make it true
  3. I think it’s autocorrect more than anything? Not sure why autocorrect didn’t catch ‘misspell’, though ??
  4. Short term vs long term risk is I think what we are seeing, not that the Twins were remiss in anything when they signed him last year. Maybe the significantly less offer did take this into consideration. And someone else pointed out in the other thread that insuring him for long term because of the leg could be a factor. At what year does insurance draw the line? I’m not so certain this issue is that something is wrong right now but that doctors and insurance companies are concerned with how his repaired leg will hold up in the latter parts of a 10-13 yr contract. If he wants a 10 yr deal at this point I think it will be for less money and one that is seriously front loaded and/or incentive based
  5. I’ll grant it’s not good but your comment said ‘worst’ and you’ve proven otherwise
  6. This is also being discussed in this thread here: https://twinsdaily.com/forums/topic/60114-rumor-mets-have-concerns-with-correa-physical/?_rid=7
  7. ‘But what about …?’ is not a discussion point that furthers the discussion at hand. It’s a non-rebuttal that is actually a detractor from the discussion and ends up being a threadjack.

  8. I’m saying that the two are highly different situations. Correa didn’t come up through our system and wanted to stay like Bux; so the FO constructed a deal for Buxton that is based entirely on Buxton remaining on the field. He gets paid more when he plays more. It is hugely incentive based. As I said, if he weren’t a risk, he’d be making Judge money up front, free and clear. He’s not. Not even close. And whatever Correa’s medical issue is, I’m sure it’s not identical. I don’t know what it is so I don’t know what kind of deal is or isn’t appropriate for his set of circumstances. You are trying to make them comparable, and they aren’t, imo. And I’m not saying just go out and sign Correa now for whatever … I’m curious what the issue is and what the risk is and what it would take because I think he can still be valuable, I just don’t know what the issue is, as I said, so don’t know what an appropriate deal would be. And Correa was on the field a lot more than Buxton last season. Just not comparable.
  9. Or that something happened last year that makes them wary … or something that has recently been reaggravated.
  10. The Buxton deal was a huge discount. If Buxton had a strong bill of health with no history, he’d be getting Judge money. What about, what about …
  11. I would take him with that deal here, too
  12. Way to ‘whatabout’ the situation. Let’s stop that right now and judge Bauer on his own merits, and lack thereof. This thread isn’t about anyone else but him.
  13. No way. If our FO hands out a contract to Bauer, I never watch another Twins game. That would be a horrible signing and Bauer needs to just go away. For those that think signing a contract with a cheater is bad, this would be a thousand times worse. Just no, I can forgive a lot, but this I couldn’t and wouldn’t.
  14. Don’t … just trying to cut down on all the threads that start out ‘Rumors’ that are no longer rumors. Although, the ‘Correa to SF’ threads certainly turned out that way ?
  15. Glad you are getting things out in here, but please don’t use the rumor function for things that aren’t rumors. Signings, releases, other teams’ news … not a rumor. But thanks for being a good poster! ?
  16. Someone else said it … they are putting a lot of eggs in the ‘remain healthier, rookies stepping up and 2nd years taking steps forward’ basket. If all that happens, we may end up with a better record and even a playoff spot, BUT … that’s an awful lotta eggs in one basket and it still doesn’t make us a better team. And no trade for a significant player is not going to involve the future sustainability as you said. The FO has put us in an untenable corner by not using FA along with development and trades. We can’t keep relying on the future to get us through. I see so many advocate for prospects being the answer, and then complain when they aren’t. Prospects and young players eventually gave us 87 … how long ago was that now?
  17. This is the bottom line for me. Whether or not we got Correa, are we improved with the moves made? No, we are not.
  18. I also wonder if trading Urshela was thinking they would get Correa
  19. Instead of focussing solely on Correa they could have worked to sign one of the other SS instead.
  20. I don’t think they had the choice. It was part of the deal. Maybe the answer was to never have signed him to begin with. Hindsight is always 20-20
  21. Then why would big free agents ever sign with New York or California teams? Seriously. And they only pay taxes for games played in those states. It’s not like their entire salaries are taxed at the NY or CA rate unless they already live there. And with the money they make, they still are left with a huge amount of expendable income, comparably speaking. I live in a high tax area, and I do so willingly because of the life I have there. It’s just not a factor … and I’m not making huge amounts of money, either
  22. That would be great info to share! Thanks! But also ask if where they sign, do taxes matter to them? If you could, for me? I’d be curious as my stance has always been I don’t think it matters, at least not to the big earners.
  23. If a salary cap becomes a thing, then so must setting a floor that owners cannot go under without strict financial penalties. I mean, payrolls running the difference from $60mil - $400mil … that’s huge. But what should be the cap, what should be the floor, and what should be the penalties?
  24. When I lived out of the country for partial years, paid taxes on what I earned there. When I filed my U.S. taxes, they figured out the taxes owed on the whole year earnings, both within and outside the U.S., then deducted what I already paid to the foreign entity. When it was entire years, I still had to file, but but paid no U.S. taxes, but with proof of my foreign residency and paid taxes on my earnings there. But, that’s not a state to state thing. It wouldn’t seem right, if living in another state, then they pay income tax, again, on their total earnings, so at some point an adjustment would need to be made? I’m not sure how that works. It’s complicated. But all that aside, income tax rates from state to state is NOT A FACTOR in where a player signs. It’s just not, so I wish people would stop saying that.
  25. Also, didn’t someone say in a previous thread, that where they reside during the off-season, where they call home, they get a credit for taxes paid elsewhere when they file?
