No doubt our need this off-season is starting pitching, starting pitching, and starting pitching in that order. Fortunately, we have all kinds of money, vets to trade, and the most valuable commodity in all of baseball, which is young starting pitching. I would look for our new GM to package Gonsalves and one of out IFA starting pitchers for an established starting pitcher. I would guess our scouts are out looking as we speak.
Our woes this season, have nothing to do with catching. If you listen to our pitching staff, you will hear they like throwing to Suzuki. I have never heard of a credible source, that judges a catcher solely on the pitching staffs ERA.
What Rob Antony said Sunday was, Mejia was at 127 innings and they were originally thinking about capping him at 130, but would give him one more start.
There is absolutely no reason to wait. BA shows we have 6 starting pitchers in our top 10 prospects and you can add Mejia and Thorpe. Trader Rob at the deadline showed it's all about winning now when he traded for 4 pitchers, all at AAA or above. It's time to open up the farm system and trade for established pitching.
Santana, Dozier, Kepler, Polanco, and Buxton should be untouchable. Vargas, Park, Palka, or A.B. Walker III in some mix, can do a reasonable job of filling the Brooks Sano hole. Time to win.
Plan B, trade Gonsalves and one of our IFA starting pitchers for an established starting pitcher. Plan A, include Brooks Sano with Plan B and get 2 established starting pitchers. Note, this will most likely need to be a 3 team deal. We can't get to where we need to be next season by just trading board scapegoats. Time to open up the farm system.
The Sano experiment at 3B has failed, and he will get most of his PA's at DH the rest of this season. When we see him at 3rd, it will be more geared toward face saving and/or keeping him engaged. They will hang on to Vargas until the new GM decides if Sano will be included among the board favorites traded for established starting pitching this off-season. Strong possibility Vargas plays for the Bad News Bears next season.
Brooks Sano is 20-25 errors waiting to happen at 3B. They never had any intention of moving Plouffe last off season. I can see giving Brooks until the end of the season to audition, but keep Nunez as an insurance policy if you move Plouffe.
Park was a classic low risk/high reward move. It was reported here, 16 teams bid on Park. Antony advised 2 teams were very close to our winning bid. He signed a team friendly contract, and after this season he still has 2 options left. He's a capable 1B, so he can play in the AL and NL. Park can be flipped at anytime.
TR didn't overpay for Nolasco and Santana. They both had other suitors. Remember, in free agency you pay market price, right? Also, I just listened to Rob Antony on Inside Twins. If the deal is favorable, they will make it. But there is no gun to their head to shed anyone.
I agree with your starting rotation. The more I think of it, May is probably better than anyone we can trade for without moving our AA arms. IMHO we can contend with those 5.
I wasn't real clear about it, but I was including the 4 he already has. 15 starts is roughly half a season. Gibson had 8 in 2013, and May had 8 in 2014. Another member and I discussed the need to let young pitchers work thru their troubles. I would give Berrios the ball every 5 days come hell or high water for the rest of the season. He should be ready for center stage day one of 2017.
I agree. These are the only 3 additional players our favorite team needs ready by day one of 2017. Any additional are pie in the sky, although I'm hoping we get a 4th in a deadline trade.
