    I read the same push back when they announced Cron, Schoop, and Parker signed contracts with the Twins. When you add it all up, the team is losing roster flexibility with each move. This is another player out of options on a MLB deal. Someone with options on the 40 man is going to lose their spot because of this move. Every move has a ripple effect.

    I'm going to save this an example A when my future wife asks me why I'm so obsessed to make Vanimal Jr. a left handed player. A guy who hasn't been good in 3 years still gets a $3.5 million contract because he's a breathing left handed pitcher. Unreal.

    There needs to be a balance for sure. TD member gunnarthor took the time to calculate how players were acquired on recent playoff teams, and the Twins. The playoff teams had a pretty even split 33% draft, 33% free agents, 33% IFA/Trades. The Twins rely on draft picks for over 50% of their MLB roster. It's simply not healthy to rely that much on draft and development.

    How does that sample compare to the other options that were available this winter and the Twins declined offering them a contract? As I said, Allen wasn't my favorite choice to sign this winter. He was simply one on a list of 12 relievers that I was more than happy to sign. The only reason Allen became a focal point is because he is one of the last free agents remaining that would appear to be an upgrade for the Twins.

    In a vacuum yes I agree. I'm not totally fine with the Twins not signing any of the other 13-14 quality relievers available this winter.

    I didn't know Reusse has a podcast, so the news he leaked that Falvine came into the offseason with the intent to have a payroll of less than $100 million is surprising, to me. And frankly, pretty insulting. My takeaway from Aaron Gleeman's charts earlier in the off-season is the Twins are spending at the exact same level as they were when they were in the Metrodome. That's not how they pitched it to the fans when they were lobbying to get Minnesotans to pay for Target Field. That is also pretty insulting. Is a smart baseball decision simply finding people on 'bargain' contracts? That seems to be the only positive things I've been reading this offseason. Schoop, Cron, Parker, etc. were bargain finds. For me, a smart baseball decision can also mean making a bid for someone like Machado. Especially on a team with players that could be a core, but haven't come all the way together yet. He would be the best player on this team, and still be young enough to be on a core for 3-4 years.

    Yep. They are set up to win 77-85 games depending on luck and health. Same range they've been in over the last 3 years. If they elect to head into the season status quo it's going to make my decision to renew MLB.tv subscription pretty easy. Hard pass.

    What's your definition of competitive? I think this team is set up to win anywhere from 77-85 games, depending on luck and health. Another reliever or 2 will go a long way toward being competitive for the playoffs.

    The last time the Braves had a payroll above 14th in the league was 2008, when they had the 10th highest payroll in baseball. They're a mid market team.

    Couldn't tell ya. Projections are just that until they sign the contract. From the surface level view Otto is projected too high, Brach too low.

    I agree with mostly all of this. I also don't want to rely on the young players to step up right away and also convert Romero to the bullpen just because they don't have better options. I also agree there is depth to make trades, a drum I've been beating all winter. However, there doesn't seem to be any urgency from Falvine to trade from their riches in the minors. I don't doubt that there are bargains to be found in FA, and some top money players won't live up to their contract. As a fan I can't confidently say player X is going to have his best season ever. Maybe the Twins do. What you do get for a higher price tag is a player with a better track record, a small variance between their best and worst seasons, and better odds they will produce good results. Take Oliver Perez for example. Near the top of the list in your sample, right? The discrepancy in ERA in just 2 seasons is over 3 runs. Is he a 1.39 ERA pitcher like 2018 or a 4.64 ERA pitcher like 2017? Those are the difficult decisions Falvey has to make when he's shopping in the bargain bin.

    There's really only 2 ways to go about this. Either spend only money to fix this unit, or trade prospects in July. Since there's no ambition to trade prospects, I don't see any other way to improve the bullpen. I don't think there are enough internal options who will be good enough for the MLB team in 2019.

    You hit the nail on the head. The only way the Twins are in the gambling zone in July is if lightning strikes and luck is on their side. They certainly aren't setting themselves up for 'sustained success' right now. I'm so tired of wait and hope... It's time they prove they want to win before I take them seriously again.

    Bandersnatch is totally worth your time! Black mirror always operates at a high level and this is more of the same. Everyone I know that went to Watson and Holmes had the same review... That's really too bad. I guess the comedy duo was due for a dud. Most everything they appear in is gold.

    Tonight I'm going to watch Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. Really looking forward to choosing my own path for how the movie goes. Has anyone watched this yet?

    His 30 day negotiation window closes on Jan 3rd so we'll see how hard they kicked those tires.

    I concur with you on your assessment. Teams can try to move players around the field to create 'flexibility' but there's always a cost. It's reasonable to expect he won't be as good defensively in the OF as he is at 1B. And he wasn't particularly good at 1B to begin with. So to recoup some lost value playing out of position, he needs to be really good with the bat to make up for it. He's not particularly good with the bat either. If he clears waivers and sent back to AAA they can play him at catcher for all I care. I don't want to see this experiment at the MLB level.

    I'd prefer having him start since it's so damn difficult to find it and he showed the ability to do so last season. Mejia could be a decent multi inning bullpen arm.

    I hope Cruz takes Sano under his wings and has a heart to heart with him about what it takes to have a long MLB career. It's up to Sano, obviously, but it's nice to have a fellow DR player on the team to look up to.
