    When you aim low, you remain a mediocre team. It's really as simple as that. What are those bargain bin arms going to do for this team? Help them win 82 games instead of 78?

    They're trying to shed some salary since they're about to acquire Cano and Diaz from Seattle. No one in the Twins' organization is off the table for 3 years of Thor.

    I think whoever invests in Eovaldi long term will get a lemon. He made a heroic effort in the playoffs showing he can start and come out of the bullpen. However, there's no way that kind of usage is sustainable over the course of 162 games. Durability has always been in question with him.

    Did people forget that Rogers was a starter at one point and couldn't separate himself from the crowd of worse starting pitching options than we have today? He tops out at 91-92 in the pen. If he goes back to starting he'll go back to being an 88-90 MPH pitcher to conserve energy. This is a bad idea.

    Sounds like a better Sunday afternoon lineup than we've seen the last 3 years.

    I echo several others in here to keep May in the bullpen. It doesn't seem like the best use of his talent to have him as a primary pitcher. I'm going to cringe every time this opener concept is discussed. I accept that this isn't going away until they give it the ol' college try. Since it's here, use it to get rookie pitchers comfortable in the big leagues. May has been there and done that. He shouldn't need an opener before pitching 4-5 innings.

    Love your post. When it comes to Harper and Machado's contracts, I think they're going to include multiple out-years throughout the duration of the contract. My guess is the first player opt-out is 2-3 years into the contract. Perhaps at the end of the 2021 season when the CBA expires... The second opt-out 5-6 years into the contract. So there's a chance the team signing him now has to pay the final years if they opt out!

    Once upon a time on this very website there were 10+ pages of "wtf!" comments when they left Zach Jones unprotected in the Rule 5 draft. Remember Zach Jones? He was supposed to be good I think.

    Sonny Gray... Meh. MadBum... Hell yes. I am very curious what SF wants for him. Dude is a work horse and a unicorn in today's MLB.

    It does effect any other FA signing they make. $5 million of the offseason budget is tied to this player. It's not guaranteed, but you best believe it's being counted right now in the payroll. Instead of signing Andrew Miller for $12 million, they may resort to another reliever for $7 million because the other $5 million is tied to Cron. There is a ripple effect with every acquisition.

    Agreed. I don't think they needed to acquire a 1B at all. Especially someone who's out of options. It's one of the easiest spots on the field to fill. Why is it necessary to dedicate 2 players (both out of options) to the easiest spot on the field to fill? We're living in a world of 3 man benches. If both make the team, they're settling for a 2 man bench on days when Austin or Cron need a day off in the field. It's a poor use of limited roster spots.

    Wait.... How many HRs and RBI did Cron have last year? I have a hard time finding that out on this page.

    I will be thrilled and praise the FO the minute they acquire someone who's significantly better than what's already on roster.

    Cron established himself last year. That's it. Before that he was on the shuttle just like Austin. Who's to say Austin wouldn't be in CJ Cron's shoes in 2019 as a 28 year old established MLB player? If both players are in the lineup, boy, there goes your flexibility. You're stuck with 2 bench players on days when Cron needs a day off at 1B. I very much prefer a DH option that can play somewhere else besides 1B.

    Right, but how are they going to determine who's the better player in 2 weeks of spring training? They have to release him within the first 16 days of ST in order to pay him 30 days termination salary (~$500k) if they cut him anytime after the 16th day through the end of ST they will pay him 45 days termination pay (~$750k) Since Austin and Cron are mostly redundant I don't see the point in picking him up in the first place.

    I don't know if it's wrong to project Austin and Cron producing similar numbers in a scenario where they each have 500 ABs... Also, admittedly I'm still a little jaded from the past regime's handling of players without options remaining. Mainly, they stuck like glue, roster construction be damned. I haven't paid as close attention to how Falvine handles players without options. If there's redundancy, I want a quick resolution.

    Couldn't this have been said about Cron before he received 500 at-bats last season?

    Hey now, the money adds up! If they release him in ST they still have to pay him ~$500k for him to go away. That's a lot of dome dogs.

    I think you laid out the Crons very well. Which is why this move is puzzling on the surface. I see redundancy with Austin already on roster, unless he was picked up to replace Austin entirely. This pick up doesn't jive with the pro-versatility movement around the league.

    Impossible to say until the Twins use the theoretical "savings" to sign another player. If they're swimming in the kiddie pool for 1B/DH I look forward to them diving in the deep end for pitching.

    If Cron or Austin takes up one of the three possible bench spots.... Well, maybe TR was on to something with Park, Mauer, and Vargas on the same roster in 2016.
