  1. Both have/had rock solid stats in the minors. Similar high 80's fastball and secondary pitches. Both refused to be called up by the Twins. Turns out that Slama was a career minor leaguer. Could it be the same for Atcher?
  2. To be fair May is handled much differently as a rookie compared to a vet like Pelfrey. They're still watching his innings carefully and on a firm 100 pitch limit per outing. Pelfrey can pitch 150 for all I care if he's pitching well.
  3. I thought so, but apparently he's stuck in long relief duty. Ugh.
  4. Pelf was cruising, but it shows that there is no confidence in the bullpen..
  5. Come on Pelf let's get out of this jam!
  6. Realistically the Twins need a guy like him in the bullpen for the next 3 months. The real question is can he be an upgrade over our current options? I believe he could. If Pelfrey's value is a low level flyer prospect, I have to imagine Benoit's is similar: even potentially a PTBNL & pick up the check for 2015. It would be nice to have a veteran with some playoff experience if they were able to clinch a spot. 22 1/3 IP - 2.82 ERA - 0.985 WHIP - 2.0 BB/9 - 10.9 K/9 - last played in 2013 with Detroit FWII... I have no idea why any of the AAA pitchers haven't received a call up yet. The FO clearly has trust issues/ inside knowledge that we don't know about. It seems like they're set on trying to find someone outside of the organization to fix the problem.
  7. Whoops, that's what happens when you Google "best free agent catchers 2014" thinking it was for the 2014 off season heading into this year.
  8. Not much the Twins could have done this last off-season to upgrade the catcher position, at least from a free agency standpoint. The best option was Brian McCann 5/85 and the Twins are never going to win a bidding war against the Yanks. Other options out there: Jarrod Saltalamachia? He was terrible this season for the Marlins and got a buyout. AJ Pierzynski? 37 years old oh boy... I hate that we're in this spot with so few options besides Suzuki. But the only option to make an upgrade was through trades. And who knows maybe some of the rookies making an impact this season would have been offered to get a catcher...
  9. It appears we are still a few years away from any internal candidate making an impact on the MLB roster, unless we're seeking Drew Butera like stats at the plate. I would call the Dodgers to find out their asking price for either Barnes or Farmer in their farm.
  10. We're in the infant stages of turning the team over to Sano / Buxton and the rest of the kids, and it's very exciting to watch. By this time next year could Sano or Buxton surpass Mauer as the face of the franchise? I believe so... To compare the call ups of our top prospects.... As others have mentioned, Sano looks very poised and confident at the plate. You can tell he's been playing professional baseball for years, even if it's his first week at the highest level. Buxton on the other hand, looked quite overmatched at the plate, swinging at junk pitches he shouldn't have. Both are still elite prospects, but Sano's a little more polished having 2 more years of pro baseball under his belt compared to Buxton.
  11. You think Willingham's knees have healed up for a comeback? There would be no grass uncovered in the OF if that was the case.
  12. Thanks for clearing up the options confusion. Wasn't sure if it counted as 2 options if he was called up and sent down throughout the year.
  13. If we bring him back up, is he out of options after that? I'd prefer to see him on whatever the date is in order to be added to the playoff roster. Let Sano get as many at bats as he can at the DH spot.
  14. As a fan I'm a little tired of the Tonkin experiment. If he hasn't stuck the previous 12 times he's been called up, what makes it different the next time he gets the call? I still have faith in Burdi making an impact at some point since he's only 22. The others like Jones and Reed are getting to that age 24-25 where you question how much longer are they considered prospects for the future.
  15. So if ROR gets the job done as a lefty in our bullpen, does that finally mean the end of Duensing? (crossing fingers that the answer is yes!)
  16. TR: "Hey Dougie, it's been a tough season for you guys, and I'm trying to keep in the playoff hunt. However, I think I have an offer that will help out both clubs." DM: "Fire away Terry, I'm getting desperate here. I may not even be back next year the way this season's been going." TR: "Alright, well we are very interested in Lucroy... and how about that Smith guy?" DM: "I don't know Terry, Lucroy is still young and affordable. What are you gonna offer in return?" TR: "Well, we were thinking Ar-" *Click - dial tone* TR: "Hmm, must have been cut off." *Tries redialing* "Now it's just his voice mail. Probably shouldn't have led off with Arcia...."
  17. Neftali Feliz was DFA'd over the weekend to make room for Matt Harrison on the Rangers' 40 man roster. If you recall, Feliz came into the majors as one of the hottest prospects in the game who could throw upper 90's gas consistently. However, after tearing his UCL in 2012, he's no longer the flame throwing closer that he once was. Instead of upper 90's heat, he's now throwing in the low 90's, with some control issues. This year's stats: 19 2/3 IP - 10 ER - 16/9 K/BB Ratio - 1.68 WHIP in MLB -- 11 IP - 9 ER - 11/4 K/BB Ratio - 1.73 WHIP in AAA He's owed the remainder of his $4.125 million salary this season, and due for arbitration next year. It would not take much to pry him away from Texas. Any interest in taking on Feliz to fix this bullpen?
  18. That's what they said that May is the new long reliever? Ugh.... The bullpen has become an embarrassment. It's far overdue to trim the fat with Duensing and Thompson. Bring up anyone with a pulse from the farm.
  19. While I'm frustrated that May was the one sent to the pen, at the end of the day he's still on the MLB roster. He's shown that he can strike people out and get out of jams. Something the Twins desperately need in the bullpen. On the other hand, Meyer did not get his fair chance to stick before he was sent down. Meanwhile we have unusable arms like Duensing and Thompson locked into the 25 man roster for... reasons. Trim the fat already and bring up some new arms from the farm.
  20. I think an important note in the original article is this: "While Molitor seems open to the 6 man idea, GM Terry Ryan seems less receptive to the idea and is leaning towards replacing a current member of the rotation." I believe TR is going to win this argument, and we'll be going back to debating who's the odd man out at SP.
  21. I get it, throw in your "Day game after a night game" cliché here, but that was a AAA lineup out there today. All of our "banked" wins in May are dwindling away...
  22. 3rd loss this season for May where he's given up 2 ER or less... get this guy some dang run support!!
  23. Feels like it's happened several times this year. Not sure how to look this up, but it feels like he has the worst run support out of all Twins starters.
  24. There's no hate on Milone in this thread. In fact, most every commenter feels he's earned the spot over May. I am offering up a different opinion. Borderline 5th starter? Yes, that is what we're talking about. Our rotation of Santana, Hughes, Pelf, and Gibson are locks. Which leaves spot #5 open for discussion - this discussion. Welcome to Twins Daily.
  25. I think we're a little too quick to cut the cord on May. He may have gotten hit around last outing, but he's also looked damn impressive with his ability to strike people out and get out of jams. I want him in the rotation for the forseeable future. My pick is Milone. He's pitched a couple of gems in a row and good for him to make this decision difficult. At the end of the day he's just a borderline 5th guy in the rotation with a questionable future on the club. IMO he should be the guy in Rochester waiting for the next injury, struggle on the MLB club.
