  1. Matt Belisle serves up 3K in the 9th after Bartolo deals seven scoreless. Hah! A little bit surreal.
  2. We could've used Buxton's lifetime slash line and his lifetime bunting record and it would come out the same. Combine Buxton's bunting stats with their knowledge of his bunting ability, I would say I sure hope they don't ignore the stats they have. Agree on the Dozier comment!
  3. Rosario, a fast runner on second and nobody out. Buxton in 2017 w/runners in scoring position: .180/.286/.197, 41% K Rate, 73 PA Buxton in 2017 when bunting: .583 BA, 4 Sacs, 16 PA Maybe Pickler showed Molitor the stats.
  4. It doesn't matter that a couple of non-prospects had a good July. What matters is that the prospects are all making progress. And they are. It isn't just the college ballplayers that are having a good start, it's the teenagers as well. Seth could've moved Badoo, Lewis and Javier ahead of Park on the list. What would "not bode well" is if these guys were scuffling at their respective levels. RE: Prospects being 2-2.5 years younger than league average... The average age in Appy is 20.3. The teenagers are doing fine. MWL - Average age is 21.2. There are only three teenage hitters in the top 50. Palacios is 20 and was ranked 11th before moving up to FTM. Diaz, Blankenhorn and Whitefield are all 20 and only slightly above average. Maybe that doesn't bode well but I'm at least going to give the softball player some credit. (16 teams in the league means only 1 out of 5 teams has a teenager in the top 50) FSL - Average age is 22.8. There are only three hitters 20 or younger in the top 50 (WRC+, 50 PA). Definitely a lack of Twins hitting prospects except for Palacios. Rooker is scuffling but he's entering his 2nd month of pro ball.(12 teams, only 1 out of 4 teams have a "prospect") Southern - Average age is 24.1. There are 5 hitters 21 or younger in the top 50, including Gordon. Another 5 are 22. Wade is 23 years old and in the top 50. He's in his 2nd full season of pro ball. I consider him a "prospect" but he's no sure bet. (10 teams, 10 players 22 or younger on the list) As I said, I think the players that are in the system "look pretty good" considering how few players actually meet your 2-2.5 year threshold for prospects.
  5. I'm happy that Garver had a good month in AAA. Hard to be upset that the Twins have a catcher ready to move to MLB. That's how prospects are supposed to progress. I'm also not concerned that a couple of non-prospects had great months. Congratulations to Park and Rodriguez - they deserve their rankings because they raked. All of the healthy MLB Top 30 hitting prospects are showing progress except for Rortvedt, who's a 19 year-old catcher in a league where the average player is 21. You could argue that Blankenhorn has some work to do but he's shown some power and patience. Palacios could've been on the HM list this month after advancing to A+. The young prospects are showing promise. The list shows Badoo, Miranda, Javier and Lewis all doing well as teenagers. Gore and Rooker have moved up after less than 100 AB and Bechtold should follow if there is room at Cedar Rapids. I think this group's performance bodes well for the Twins. We'd all like the Twins to have a couple more hitters at AA and AAA who are top-100 prospects. But the stats for the players who are in the organization look pretty good.
  6. Might be time for Bechtold to move up - he's hitting .365/.443/.568. Cedar Rapids already has Blankenhorn and Cabbage. Maybe to Fort Myers? Any opinions from those who have seen him play?
  7. Best wishes to Brandon Kintzler... Thanks for the saves!
  8. They might be more interested in Escobar to fill in at 2B and SS.
  9. My guess is that he's AAA insurance for a Garver callup. There is an outside chance the Twins are putting together another trade that involves Garver but I'd be surprised if that happened.
  10. Whitefield is pretty good for a softball player. Seriously, he looks really athletic and his stats are solid. A dark-horse prospect?
  11. Good comments. I was looking at the Twins likelihood of winning v. the White Sox. The Twins are later in the cycle and we know 7 of them can compete in the majors. Maybe most of Chicago's prospects will become starters in the minimum amount of time. It usually doesn't happen so smoothly, especially for pitchers. Only time will tell.
  12. The White Sox are 11 games under .500 and headed south. They are doing what they need to rebuild. They will be strong about the time the Twins core group is eligible for free agency. (Maybe earlier, depending on who they get for Robertson and Frazier) The Twins have five position players age 25 and under and are headed up. Two Twins starters are here to stay and are 23 and 24. There should be at least two more new relievers up later this year. Granite and Garver give the Twins some depth. They also have enough farm talent and available cash to acquire players and compete for the next four years. I'd rather be the Twins than the White Sox. Of course, we could trade our MLB talent and build for 2021...
  13. The top two prospects in the trade have serious potential. Still, I'm surprised the Cubs didn't have to add a third prospect from their top 30. I would've traded the four Seth mentioned for Quintana.
  14. Nice to see a big debate about going after a very good/excellent SP with top prospects. The team is finally getting better. Gordon has to be on the table to get the talent and control the Twins need in a SP. The bigger question is: Are the Twins willing to include Kepler and Gordon (+ others) in a trade to get one of the top four mentioned? I'd say yes to Archer, who is under control through 2021. I've been assuming in previous TD posts that the Twins won't go that big - but I'd like to see them try.
  15. I agree with you Mike. I think Granite will spend more time in the minors. IMHO, the only way he stays all year is because of injury or trade. I just didn't want to stir the pot too much.
  16. Agreed. I was responding more to the idea that Rosario can be traded because he is blocking Granite. I'd be ok with moving Polanco or Gordon and other prospects if the Twins go after a Sonny Gray-type. Gotta give up something to get a talented SP. Esco can handle SS if Polanco is traded. But if the Twins trade Rosario mid-season they would be left with a rookie LF and no depth to cover injuries. If they have to add Rosario to get a deal done, so be it. But there is a good chance it would be a step back for the rest of this season. I'd rather give up Polanco/MiLB prospects or wait until the end of the season to make a big trade for a SP. The Twins will have a better idea about Granite after a few months in the majors.
  17. There is room for all five, at least for this season. There is no other depth at AAA if someone gets injured. All of the top teams have depth. They're giving Garver some time in the OF at AAA but he's not a full-time solution. In the meantime, Rosario has been very good since May 1 - .295/.338/.497. His K Rate has been down all season (19%). He still hasn't reached his peak, IMO. Granite is a superior fielder but we won't know if he can hit MLB pitching for a while (months, not weeks). If they do make a deadline trade, I'd rather see Grossman go than Rosario. Grossman has value as a bat for a contender and Vargas can hold down DH with Garver as a second option.
  18. I wouldn't trade prospects at the deadline for a short-term pitcher even if the Twins stay in the race. The premium will be too high. I'd continue to keep an eye out for veteran SP/RP that might be salvaged. There are a few players that could be traded if the Twins fall back. Utility players are usually in demand so Escobar could bring back extra mid-season value. Same with professional hitters. I could see Grossman traded at a premium as well. Grossman and Escobar are under 30 years old and relatively cheap. They could help the Twins if they make a serious run next year. I'd only trade them if we get near-ready pitching in return. Gimenez might have value if a contender loses a C to injury. He's kind of a favorite of mine but Garver is ready to step up. Santana and Kintzler are in demand but the Twins are already short on pitching. I think the Twins can contend next year so I'd only trade them this mid-season at a very high premium. Sign Kintzler for two years, if necessary. Bigger trades can be made in the offseason. The Twins may have to trade a young OF, Gordon and/or some of the very young prospects to get a controllable SP. Or maybe they could open the Pohlad pocketbook and sign FA Tyler Chatwood (28 years old).
  19. Three players reached base by K/WP for three different Twins affiliates and they all contributed to runs? Must be a new strategy decreed by Falvine.
  20. Gonsalves needs to be on the list. He's struck out 30% of all batters he's faced in AA, his BB/9 are less than 2 this year and his career MiLB ERA is 2.19. He's making AA look easy and he's still just 22 years old. But as long as he doesn't throw 97 mph, he won't be ranked.
  21. The Twins should bring up one of the AA prospects only if there is an injury, a trade, or they fall out of the running for a playoff spot. That means we should see at least one of them soon, since any of these three scenarios could happen in the next few weeks.
  22. Zack Granite has been incredible but Mitch Garver has been very good too. He's walking a lot and has improved his power. His slash is now at .276/.389/.488. Like Granite, it looks like he's ready for a call to the Twins if someone gets hurt or the team starts to slide in the standings.
  23. If Garver is going to replace Gimenez, he should have at least four relief appearances instead of four starts in LF.
  24. He also might be called up if the Twins fall out of contention and trades are made. Grossman and Escobar should be in demand as specialty pieces on a contending team.
  25. Here's a scouting report for Rooker from John Sickels: "Performance-wise, there’s nothing not to like here: his numbers are outstanding and the SEC is the premier circuit in college baseball. Lest you think the gaudy numbers are a result of the metal bat, Rooker has also hit very well with wooden bats in college summer ball, hitting .360/.413/.604 in the 2015 New England Collegiate League and .305/.335/.426 in the 2016 Cape Cod League. Wherever he goes, he hits."
