    Color me concerned when it comes to this offense--17th in wRC+, 22nd in OBP, 7th worst in k-rate, 19th in bb rate, 11th worst in soft contact, 4th worst in going oppo, 3rd worst in called/swinging strike rate, 3rd worst in contact rate. There will be days like Sunday when it clicks, and the Twins will look like world-beaters. But too often the Twins are going to fail to make contact, not get on base, hit harmless grounders/flyouts, and go down meekly, like they did the last two days.

    No evidence for it, but it feels like the Twins saw this game as a likely L, so decided to not really play all out to win. If true, that speaks somewhat to the Twins attempting to use strategy. Whether I agree with that strategy is another thing.

    CC can get a day off tomorrow--when there's, you know, a day off. Starting Friday, the Twins have 10 games in 10 days, so sit him for a game in that stretch. Go look at the bullpen chart from last night's game recap--the Twins have 10 relievers, but only 4 of them (Rodriguez, Jax, Duran, and Duffey didn't pitch last night). You have to think both Thielbar and Smith are completely out, as they've pitched two days in a row. So Rocco left himself in a bad spot if Paddack had a short start, got injured, or the game goes to extras, all because he pitched 4 guys (all of whom are probably in the top half of his 10 man bullpen) in a game the Twins had pretty well in hand. That then cascaded into last night's 7 reliever fiasco.

    Polanco has not made an error today. But I do think it's weird to sit your $35M shortstop who is probably gone at years end after only 5 games. As another poster pointed out, you could have DH'd either Correa or Buxton yesterday, and then you could have both of them in the lineup both days.

    That's exactly the point I was making--Baldelli did not do that. Urshela is the primary 3B, and has a career 3.6 UZR/150 in over 3200 innings. Paddack is the starting pitcher--where exactly do you think Baldelli should have had him play defense today if not at pitcher?

    Shouldn't the pattern be -1 run in the 4th? I look forward to the Twins batting with the game tied 0-0 in the bottom of the 5th.

    I mean, I'm not a Baldelli guy, but he didn't make the errors, nor were the errors made because he asked a player to play out of position.

    I'm saying if David Popkins was ready to be an MLB hitting coach in 2022, he probably would have been coaching somewhere other than A ball. Wes feels like an exception at this point, and perhaps was still in college because he didn't want to be a pitching coach in the minors, and no one was willing to hire him straight to the bigs (since he was the first college pitching coach to ever go straight to MLB from college).

    Yup. Joe Smith being able to throw more than 3 pitches would have been nice, but that's a direct consequence of Rocco using Smith in the 8th inning on Monday. It should have been obvious that Monday would have been the time to use Winder, especially with a 4-0 lead against a not great offense.

    In 2019 and 2020, yes it did. In 2021, not so much.

    My biggest frustration with Rocco is he seems totally incapable of grasping long-term strategy. I feel like he's not very good at understanding how the decisions he makes in the moment have ripple effects beyond the current game, for example, using 7 relievers to pitch 5 innings yesterday, the day after using 4 relievers to cover 4 innings while holding a 4 run lead, and with an early game today.

    It's also worrisome that 5 games in a row is apparently Rocco's limit for Correa before he needs a day off, especially given the off day tomorrow.

    I'm guessing it might have something to do with hiring a guy from A ball to be your MLB hitting coach. Even if he goes on to be great, there has to be just a massive learning curve going from A to MLB, and in a different organization, all while in the middle of a lockout, to boot.

    The Twins don't have a game tomorrow; beyond that, why would a first start with a new organization be something that requires a week+ to prepare for? If the Twins acquire a starter at the deadline on July 31, do they need to wait until at least August 7 to let him pitch? Again, the Dodgers have seen him 6 times in the last 3 years. They only saw him once all of last year. If Paddack is that easy to figure out, then he's going to be out of the league very quickly. Also, the Twins are playing Boston at 2PM on Friday--forecast is for a high of 66. That is indeed a lot better, but it's also not like Boston has a bad lineup either. If Paddack is going to be anything more than a 5th starter, he has to be able to pitch against good teams who have seen him before. If he can't do that, it was a waste of resources to acquire him.

    Everyone is aware of what Buxton can do now, and there's going to be some adjustments. Buck is gonna have to adjust too.

    At a certain point, pitchers have to be able to get results against teams that have seen them before. If Paddack is here for 3 years, he's going to see the Central teams 10-12 times each. If indeed Paddack shouldn't be started against a team that's seen him only 6 times from 2019-2021, then trading for him was a massive mistake.

    Saying I don't ascribe to the thinking that rookies are much more likely to start the season cold, does not mean I think they are more likely to start hot. It means I don't agree with you. As I am not providing an assertion one way or the other, no data need be presented. The very fact that I'm not presenting data is the very reason I am, in fact, not making an assertion. The Mariners are trying to win this year, and included J-Rod and Brash on their opening day lineup. Houston declined to re-sign Correa in favor of Pena. Tampa Bay constantly starts the year with rookies on their roster. A number of other teams that are trying to win might not include rookies for a number of other reasons, for example they have established starters at almost every position (that's probably part of why they expect to win), or maybe they gutted their farm system to trade for stars, or perhaps they're keeping prospects down in order to get an extra year of control. Yet again, you are claiming to know the beliefs and motivations of other people, while providing no data to back up your assertions. It's fine if you want to do that, but it's silly to think you aren't going to get questioned on it.

    I don't have any data--but I'm not the one making the assertion--you are. The burden of proof is therefore on you. You said the Twins shouldn't have too many rookies in the lineup at the same time, because they're "almost guaranteed" (your words, not mine) to start slow, but then you never defended that. Even in this post I'm responding to, you're throwing out more suppositions and speculation. I would suggest not doing that if you're trying to argue a point.

    This is what has gotten Rocco in trouble in the past. Unless your pen is 6-7 guys deep, you can't treat 4 run leads in the 6th and 7th like it's a close game. At some point, you have to trust the last 3 guys in your pen to be able to get 9 outs while giving up 3 or fewer runs (which of course also assumes that the offense that scored 4+ runs in 5 or 6 innings doesn't tack on). If you absolutely refuse to do that, then there's no point to have those guys there.
