  1. Wow, when did Jorge Alcala learn how not to choke? Seems like a lot of dubious Twins pitchers have discovered their big boy game.
  2. Paddack looks like he's turned the corner from a talented thrower to a serious pitcher.
  3. You know things are going well when your relief pitcher loads the bases before he gets a strike one on a guy, and still he gets out of the inning clean. Bene fortuna for the Twinkies. Who sold what to the devil?
  4. If you don't want to play, take yourself out of the game. Don't sabotage Ross Dunn, a young pitcher struggling to make it in baseball. What Derek Bender did was pretty close to unforgivable. Time for him to consider doing something else for a living. I don't even care if he's got talent. Good riddance.
  5. Good article. Did the graphics for changeup and slider somehow get swapped? I like the knees and elbows look of Festa's delivery. That's where he gets his power.
  6. Wow, Wallner's throw from the right field fence to 2nd base was a strike at about 95 mph. That's exactly the throw I was talking about in a comment a couple days ago. Wallner belongs in right field, where a ball bouncing off the wall will give him a full shoulder turn into the throw. His arm isn't quite the cannon of Michael Cuddyer, but it'll catch most of the guys trying to stretch a single. Also, the 2nd baseman should have let the ball travel a little farther; then the play wouldn't have been so close. If and when Kepler finally goes, Wallner in RF will offer 85 percent of Kep's range, but with a much stronger arm, and a more dangerous bat.
  7. I've been relatively loyal to Trevor Larnach, giving up on him only about four times. Kind of the same deal with Matt Wallner, tho I'm still waiting for him to start gunning runners down trying to take that extra base. Where's that gun, Matt? Comes down to patience, I guess. A word that is alien to my fickle fan ears...
  8. I think the artic cold milk was 25 cents when I was a kid. I definitely drank enough to feel sick, but unlike Joe, I didn't immediately head for the Giant Slide. I think one of my brothers did barf on the Tilt o Whirl, but not from the milk. Might have been Proto Pups and a giant lemonade. Barfing at the Fair is almost as traditional as the Fair itself. Hey, what a good name for a coffee table book, "Barfing at the Fair." Lotsa big, glossy photos!
  9. That last big curve from Sim was just cheeky.
  10. So many things are rare that they happen all the time.
  11. I laughed so hard, now I'm winded.
  12. Rangers announcer: Twins don't have their closer tonight... Cole Sands: Bing, bang, boom. Chicken dinner, guvnah?
  13. Eh, Miranda needs to get it to the outfield...not blessed with good footspeed. I wonder if a month with a track coach...oh, well. It can work, by the way. I remember a guy in high school, below average footspeed. He actually did take track lessons one summer (rich daddy). Came to senior soccer season, suddenly he was the fastest guy on the team. He must have added 5 mph to his sprint speed.
  14. Uncle Festa did good today, very stingy. Enriquez did his job, and Alcala is bringing triple digits, topped out at 101 mph... I'm having a hard time maintaining my Minnesota gloomy mindset. These guys look pretty good!
  15. Ober, Lopez, then Festa, Matthews and Sim. That five makes a pretty good starting rotation. Swap in Varland from the pen for whoever falters, and you've got a pretty good staff. Bring up Andrew Morris for spot duty in the pen and the rotation, and you've got an even better staff. Frankly, I'm seeing the kind of problem you want. Enough serious talent to shuffle 'em around and still win games. All these guys are strike throwers, and stingy with walks. This is a playoff team. Not yet a Series team, but they should be able to squeak into the tournament, maybe even surprise somebody. I'm not seeing inevitable losing here. I'm wondering how good these guys can be.
  16. He must have great parents - they gave him a perfect set of names. He can go totally normal, Hi, I'm Dan Matthews. Or, he can be Danny, Dan'l, DZ, D-Zeb, Zeb, Zebbie, Zebulon, D'Zebulon, Zebulon the Conqueror, Admiral Zebulon of the Orion Invasion Force, D-Matt, Z-Matt... Best part is, none of them get picked on in 4th grade! This kid can't miss!
  17. Bring up Andrew Morris from AAA. He's young, healthy, and talented. You can rotate him in and out of the bullpen with Varland. You'll certainly get more innings from him than from Hill, and Morris will certainly be cheaper. After Joe Ryan went down, we should acknowledge that the Twins are a long shot to win a single playoff series, much less go further. Might as well continue to develop these talented farmhands. Festa and Matthews both look quite promising. Let's see if a third good young arm is waiting across the river. The downside is no worse than it looks right now, while the upside could be legendary.
  18. With a name like Zebby, ain't no need for a nickname. Don't change a thing, Zebby! I hereby add your name to my spelling dictionary!
  19. Chances are looking good...
  20. Another fan noticed, and I agreed: Festa's elbows-and-knees look is reminiscent of young Bert Blyleven. That's gotta be a good sign.
  21. Just got here. Has Zebby looked this solid the whole 5 innings?
