    Eh, Miranda needs to get it to the outfield...not blessed with good footspeed. I wonder if a month with a track coach...oh, well. It can work, by the way. I remember a guy in high school, below average footspeed. He actually did take track lessons one summer (rich daddy). Came to senior soccer season, suddenly he was the fastest guy on the team. He must have added 5 mph to his sprint speed.

    Uncle Festa did good today, very stingy. Enriquez did his job, and Alcala is bringing triple digits, topped out at 101 mph... I'm having a hard time maintaining my Minnesota gloomy mindset. These guys look pretty good!

    Ober, Lopez, then Festa, Matthews and Sim. That five makes a pretty good starting rotation. Swap in Varland from the pen for whoever falters, and you've got a pretty good staff. Bring up Andrew Morris for spot duty in the pen and the rotation, and you've got an even better staff. Frankly, I'm seeing the kind of problem you want. Enough serious talent to shuffle 'em around and still win games. All these guys are strike throwers, and stingy with walks. This is a playoff team. Not yet a Series team, but they should be able to squeak into the tournament, maybe even surprise somebody. I'm not seeing inevitable losing here. I'm wondering how good these guys can be.

    He must have great parents - they gave him a perfect set of names. He can go totally normal, Hi, I'm Dan Matthews. Or, he can be Danny, Dan'l, DZ, D-Zeb, Zeb, Zebbie, Zebulon, D'Zebulon, Zebulon the Conqueror, Admiral Zebulon of the Orion Invasion Force, D-Matt, Z-Matt... Best part is, none of them get picked on in 4th grade! This kid can't miss!

    Bring up Andrew Morris from AAA. He's young, healthy, and talented. You can rotate him in and out of the bullpen with Varland. You'll certainly get more innings from him than from Hill, and Morris will certainly be cheaper. After Joe Ryan went down, we should acknowledge that the Twins are a long shot to win a single playoff series, much less go further. Might as well continue to develop these talented farmhands. Festa and Matthews both look quite promising. Let's see if a third good young arm is waiting across the river. The downside is no worse than it looks right now, while the upside could be legendary.

    Another fan noticed, and I agreed: Festa's elbows-and-knees look is reminiscent of young Bert Blyleven. That's gotta be a good sign.

    Wow, Ober's command is razor-sharp today. Right now he looks like the Twins' best pitcher, and it's not even close.

    If "gravity defying" is synonymous with "elevated," then Topa's slider does not exactly inspire confidence, unless it's in hitters. An elevated slider can go an awfully long way in the wrong direction.

    My god, you're right. 19 year old Bert was a gangly young man, all elbows and knees. What a curveball...I think he got about 19 whiffs on curves in his first game. Maybe Bert can give Festa a few tips... ;-)

    I wanna call David Festa, "Elbows." He's so rangy and gangly, seems like his elbows stick out half a foot farther than average. When he pulls his hands in, he looks like a preying mantis. Elbows, knees, pointy shoes...How does he make a baseball go anywhere?? And yet, seems he does it with little problem. All those angles turn into pitches pretty much where he wants, plenty fast, spinning about right, etc. Gangly angles, lanky limbs and all, David Festa is getting it done.

    Gotta tell ya, this Twins squad is looking pretty solid. Festa looks like a very serviceable 4th or 5th starter, trending up. Thielbar is back in form. Jax is dominating.

    I see some serious talent, but...Whoa, look at Andrew Morris! That young man is built like an Olympian, did you notice? And did you see his self-confident strut after that last heater for a K to end the game? Dooods, Andrew Morris has the look of a future stud horse starting pitcher. He looks like he could handle major leaguer hitters right now. I wonder if Twins could stick him in the bullpen for the playoffs...

    Dang it, I changed 7k's to 9k's from my original prediction. Off by one run, too...

    Fearless prediction: Ober goes seven innings, nine K's, two earned runs. Twins win 7-2. The man is cruising.

    Ober is becoming what I hoped he'd be - an innings eating horse with a low ERA. In other words, an excellent MLB starting pitcher. He has found his place, ironed out his rough edges, figured out an optimal workout routine. Best of all, he shows calm confidence on the mound. He completely trusts his stuff, and it's working. He's spotting his heater really well, and he has refined his changeup, getting tons of whiffs. Hitters will of course try to lay off his change, but it's a hard assignment, as his arm action is the same as his fastball.

    Man, that pitch hit Miranda's head very, very hard. Yo MLB, keep making those helmets bigger. I don't care if they look silly at first, we'll get used to it.

    Miranda may be a better hitter, but on balance Santana is a better 1st baseman. Better glove for sure, knows exactly what to do on every play, so he's half a step ahead of Miranda defensively. At the plate, Santana may not bring quite the power Miranda does, but Santana is a switch hitter, and he has one ability Miranda can't match: Availability. Having a steady, capable 1st baseman helps the whole infield.
