  1. The Twins have several young pitchers in AAA and AA that should now get their cup of coffee rather than bringing up more guys (veteran or not) that can't break the 90 mph barrier without max effort. The team has rebounded from its late July / early August swoon. Let's keep in mind what caused that swoon in the first place: playing the best teams in the league, Astros and Dodgers, then getting pounded by Detroit because the pitching staff can barely hold them at bay for more than a few innings. This tells us that the Twins are definitely NOT ready to make a serious run at a ring. Knowing that, the team needs to keep that coffee urn full, and a stack of little plastic cups ready. Moar callups, moar tryouts!
  2. Garver must come up soon. The Twins desperately need to find more guys that can apply pressure in every way. Garver is about equal with Gimenez behind the plate. But with the bat, Garver applies more pressure than either Gimenez or Castro. I can see keeping an experienced vet like Castro as your first catcher, but his backup should be better with the bat than Gimenez.
  3. Okay, let's go with crafty veterans and upstart youth. You never know!
  4. I see your point, though both men might serve better as middle relievers, if the Twins can just find somebody else to close. I'm not saying bring Perkins back, either. Until Perk is throwing in the mid-90's, I don't see him being much better than Belisle. Chargois would have been my first pick, but he's gone for the year. Maybe John Curtiss or Randy Rosario. Point is, it's got to be somebody that can bring serious heat. Or a knuckleball.
  5. We are looking at Eddie Rosario's breakout. Too bad it didn't start in the first half.
  6. I believe that was a curve ball that Sano just golfed into the stands. Did he guess on that?
  7. It seemed odd, but I had a bad feeling around the 7th inning that the Tigers were getting ready to rally. They actually do have a very dangerous batting lineup, and that 4-run lead did not look safe. The problem with not having a legitimate closer is that really good hitters like Justin Upton can do their heroics much easier on low-90's stuff than on high-90's stuff. Kintzler survived because he had developed a cutter/2-seamer combo that he could spot reliably on the corners from 92 to 94 mph. Belisle doesn't have any special pitch, just a down-plane fastball going about 90 that he throws low in the zone. His curve also tends low, but it's not a hard break. Going forward, the team must find somebody other than Belisle to close. I nominate Busenitz, or get somebody up from AAA or AA.
  8. "Just throw it over the plate, kid. What's the worst that can happen?"
  9. I have a feeling Royce Lewis isn't going to spend a lot of time in the minor leagues.
  10. Either Pressly or Busenitz. I like the latter because he fires upper 90's heat on a downward plane to the lower corners, just what you want a closer to do. Both guys might succeed as a closer, but what we really need is a real closer, a guy that comes up through the minors as a closer.
  11. The Tigers are professional ballplayers. Possibly the Twins thought they were going to give up after the 7th inning. They did not. Good comeback for Detroit.
  12. Not much. Molitor appears to be making pretty logical moves these days. Comes down to starting pitchers not finishing enough innings. Eventually you are going to deplete the pen, as is happening right now. Can Belisle hold them off for one more inning? Drama!
  13. Can't throw the baseball there, Hildenberger.
  14. Twins are now over-using the bullpen. This will cost over the next few games.
  15. Good idea. Gee looked gassed. Or something. Maybe he ran out of ideas. I can relate.
  16. BTW, this game is NOT put away yet. Twins need moar goode defenze.
  17. Buxton needed a smaller keyhole on that pitch.
  18. D-d-dang, Sano fired that into the ground on purpose, didn't he? Three great defensive plays in a row. This is how good teams play.
  19. Dylan Gee is really impressing me. This doesn't look like a washed up pitcher at all.
  20. And then Eddie does the same thing. Good defense!! ...and don't think the pitchers don't notice how these guys are busting a gut to catch those balls. Huge boost for pitcher morale.
  21. Mauer! I was already cussing that one falling in a hole. Mauer actually found another gear for a few steps, then re-grabbed that ball. What an athlete.
  22. Mujica's best pitch is a sneaky 2-seamer that starts out of the zone, then bends arm-side about a foot. However, just like Kyle Gibson's 2-seamer, it's not actually very hard to hit because it sits up in the zone. Both guys want the hitter to give up on the pitch, but if they swing at it, they'll drill a line drive.
  23. Detroit is acting like the state of Michigan.
  24. Good snap by Joe. And then good swing by Sano. Okay, he can come off the bench now.
  25. Don't forget Molitor, and Molitor, and Molitor. He's been gone, fired, and executed in the public square several times this season. I myself condemned Belisle to an untimely demise. Even today I was calling for Sano to be benched!
