Article: A Refreshing Shift in Twins Territory
diehardtwinsfan replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm not against adding a starter, but I think they will have to do it using the surplus of talent at AAA. We have way too many with the options clock ticking, at which point they will be worth a lot less. I'm not sure those guys on their own though will get the type of starter that we want though. -
Article: Across the Meadow: The Buxton Saga
diehardtwinsfan replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I normally side with the players in this type of situation, but I really cannot with Buxton... and this is why. If anything Buxton should have spent more time in the minors in 2016, 2017, and 2018. He didn't, and for the wrong reasons. He's now super 2 eligible because of it. It's not like Byron didn't get plenty of service time that he didn't deserve in the process. -
I think the choice to try again in 2013 wasn't necessarily a bad one. The 2012 team also dealt with a lot of injuries if I remember right, so taking another shot 1 year removed wasn't a bad decision. The bad decision (in my opinion) was choosing to not acquire talent when it was obvious that 2013 was bad. Instead, they extended Perkins and Suzuki. I'm not sure they were going to get much for Hammer since he was in the first year of his deal, but there really wasn't an excuse in my opinion for not flipping Suzuki and Perkins. Their other failure was not getting a bunch of the 1 year make good type deals that could be flipped for more talent if they didn't do well. Ryan was always dumpster diving. My other big beef is that you're making the assumption that once we commit to a rebuild, we should just bring up the prospects, whether they are ready or not. On that, I'm not going to agree with you. There's a pretty big learning curve between the low minors where our best prospects were and the majors, and the notable young ones that were brought up early clearly needed more seasoning. Hicks and Buxton are perfect examples. It's not as simple as saying sink or swim. You need to have a guy knows how to do more than tread water. That's what the minor leagues are for. In Hicks case, the Yankees have benefited from him figuring it out, and all we have to show for it is Gabriel Moya.

It will be interesting. I think number 4 should be number 1. They need to bring in a guy like Cruz to DH, and I wouldn't mind a guy that can play 1B/3B/DH on top of that to keep Austin, Sano, and the new guy fresh. I'd add that they need a 2B and more flexibility in the IF as well. They actually do have a surplus of young pitching, and not enough places to put them all.. esepcially if they go out and get someone. I think to some extent, they may have to trade some of it off. I'd consider Romero, Thrope, and Graterol practically untouchable (note, I'd send one of them off, but I'd better be getting someone really good) The other problem is the pen. Lots of options, and a manager that doesn't trust any of them. My biggest disappointment from this season is really not seeing any of those guys truly emerge, and the FO trading off the one guy that did. Don't get me wrong, I liked those prospects, but that trade is the only one that negatively impacted 2019, and we didn't see enough to make me think that the guys we have can step up.
-
I personally would argue that our mid 2000s pen started it (though to be fair, I don't think we figured that out)... we were constantly outperforming our pythag during that time.

Greinke is under contract, right? You'll have to eat some of his salary (don't care there), but you'll have to send someone(s) away. I'd be fine with that. We have too much pitching at the high levels, and they will have to go at some point, so if it meant sending over someone not named Thrope, Romero, or Graterol, I'd probably be good with it. On that note, I kind of wonder what the Realmuto sweepstakes will look like this offseason. I could see the Marlins dealing him since they seem to be deathly allergic to contracts.

I pretty much agree... except the part of penciling in Buxton there. I'm not sure I'm comfortable going north with Buxton at this point. Way too many seasons of not being able to hit. I'd like (if there is one) a 1 year make good deal from a CF with upside and plan on Buxton spending 2019 in the minors. I agree though on the rest of it. We need a DH, and as John mentioned, a middle of the order type. We need a 2B. I'm not ready to hand that to Gordon. One would hope we could bring Escobar in to fill that role till Gordon is ready and then move to a flex role at that point. As for pitching, yeah, I'm not too worried about that. Maybe an arm in the pen, but pitching wasn't our problem this year.

Buxton's Greatness Knows No Bounds
diehardtwinsfan commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
29 extra outs per season is great.. It doesn't make up for the outs he gives away at the plate. It won't take much improvement at the plate to turn him into a solid player, and a lot of improvement makes him a star. I hope he figures it out. -
I don't beleive Bob lives in FL anymore. That's unfortunate.

encouraged? Considering that everyone had written him off... If you want something that says that the new FO has changed development practices with Stewart, look at his progression. He actually started striking people out this year. Now that said, I'm not sure they should count on him. He's got 3 options, I'd plan on using one next year and see if he continue to improve. Either that, or perhaps he's trade bait at some point. He's showing that he's probably ready to be a serviceable back end starter with some upside. Perhaps someone with a blocked player at one of our needy positions might flip him to fill one of theirs?

Article: Learning Leadership from Chris Gimenez
diehardtwinsfan replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There's no desire to limit discussion. The desire is to eliminate the portrayal of unfounded speculation as fact as well as the tendency of some to disparage character. -

athletes have to deal with adversity too... that's essentially what Gimenez said in this piece. Judging by the fact that every FO makes signings based on this, I think we should give the Twins a bit of slack for acquiring Giminez… -
Article: Where Are The Twins Getting It Wrong?
diehardtwinsfan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Fair enough, but other than 2 months in 2017, Buxton has looked bad in general. He looked pretty bad in the minors too this season. I don't think his injury gives him a mulligan here, and even as he heated up in September, he was doing so with crappy peripherals. Lots of people can look good in a 40 AB sample size, which is what hot week in September was. I just find this juxtaposition interesting. The argument made on this site to call him up was due to a hot week. I don't think you can have this both ways. -

I don't get this take at all. For one, I doubt many Cleveland fans loved Kluber when the Indians got him. It takes time to develop players, and these guys have had all of two years to do it. Kluber was acquired by the Indians in 2010 after a break out season (look him up, he wasn't very good prior to 2010). He didn't start showing tangible results to look like the Kluber we know until 2013. I don't think anyone is saying Belisle is the next Kluber. The question at hand is whether not the guys the FO is getting right now might be. It will take a few more years to figure that one out, which is why I tend to agree with others that this new FO is a 5 year experiment. -

I think you'd need to find one instance of said player following up that season with a .383 OPS first. I mean seriously... There are players with higher OBPs than Buxton's OPS in the majors this year. You can point out service time manipulation, but at the same time, this isn't happening if Buxton's major league line is remotely competent. -

Van, I have to ask... You were one of the big proponents of getting rid of the last FO, if I remember right. You weren't a fan of scholarships either, if I remember right. Correct me if I'm wrong by the way... What exactly does one expect in this? Buxton isn't up because he didn't earn it. Why are we at TD so upset now because, quite frankly, he wasn't handed a scholarship. I certainly think the FO can learn a thing or two from the previous regime. That's precisely why you don't go in and fire everyone (which they didn't), but at the same time, we've been clamoring for them to make good business decisions. They did that. I'm not sure we can have it both ways when they suddenly drop the Minnesota nice aspect of things. -
Twins 2018 Short Season Pitcher Of The Year

Considering the Twins teams tend to skew those numbers, I'd be curious of the appy league numbers minus the Twins... there are what, six teams in that league or something like that?- 8 replies

They also created a bunch of new positions as well. Orgs don't turnover well when they fire everyone, and I'd argue that there was plenty of good talent in the org, it just wasn't used well. I think a radical shakeup is accurate. I wouldn't be surprised if there's more shaking up this offseason either. Like it or not, transforming a culture doesn't happen overnight. -
Article: Kirilloff's 2018 One for the Ages
diehardtwinsfan replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think people would rightfully be upset if AK and Rooker started next season at their same levels. Both should be up a level from where they finished 2018... Both are potential call up options to MN next year (though I think Rooker, Weil, and Raley will take precedence over AK) That said, I think it's pretty clear Buxton should have spent another year in AAA. At this point it's very easy to say that in hindsight. I'd argue he should be starting there in 2019. -

diehardtwinsfan replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I expect Gordon to get a cup of coffee at some point next year. Someone will need a few weeks on the DL. Rooker will probably force his way into the picture next year, especially if he doesn't get into his "new level/slow start" pattern that he's had at every other stop. I think AK and Lewis are a bit aggressive. Both would likely start in AA, though I think Lewis might start in A+... not sure. He wasn't quite as overpowering with the bat and will definitely need more minor league seasoning on his glove (though to be fair, he can do that at any level). I think the idea that all shoudl be up at some point next year though isn't wise. It has nothing to do with service time and everything to do with the tendency that fans have to ignore the very real learning curves at these levels. I think watching Buxton struggle in the majors should be a good reason for pause on rushing these guys. There's no harm in making them earn it, not to mention they are better setup to succeed if they do. It also ignores the fact that we'd have to toss aside someone like Kepler or not sign a 2B/SS to make that work. That would be punting on 2019 and quite possibly 2020.
