  1. I remember those debates.. though I think that may have had more to do with who was being played in front of Buscher.
  2. I think they need to do a bit more here. Getting a Grandall and Cruz would be very beneficial. I also think trading some of their AAA pitching for ML help makes sense too. I don't think they were that far away from being a solid team. If Sano and Buxton do anything similar to their 2017 numbers, we're going to be wishing the FO tried a bit harder.
  3. Not sure I can get behind you here Tom. I think you can still target some 1 year options that are tradeable if things go south and some multi-year options at areas of weakness that make sense. If Buxton and Sano do something similar to 2017, we would have been a playoff contender this year, and finding an upgrade at DH and 2B this offseason shouldnt' be too hard to do. I'm only trading those guys if I'm convinced they will regress. I think this is more a reload scenario, and you can reload with an eye on 2020 if needed.
  4. I would add Weil personally, though if they can get away with not adding him, that's great. I suppose with him being a 1B/DH type, he's likely to not be selected. I also think they should be looking at trading some guys like Stewart, Slegers, Littell, or Gonsalves. They won't be able to keep all of them, and flipping one of them for some help elsewhere or prospects makes sense. They need a 2B and could use a flex player. Not sure you'd get an allstar, but I'd like to believe one or two of those guys could net a decent ML piece.
  5. Motivator Good strategist (in game management as well as using analytics)Good bull pen management. Good at player development. It's a young team, that has to come into play. This guy is the field general. He's got to have a lot of those traits.
  6. Like this idea. Kind of curious what the market for Cutch will be this offseason. .792 OPS out of a RF is hardly going to have teams lining up to give him a big deal. I think Cruz, Cutch, and Escobar would be a pretty nice FA move by the Twins. Would really add some flexibility to the team as well as improving on what was a pretty bad offense. I'd add that then they could option Buxton to start the year and call him up once he's earned it.
  7. It's too soon to give up on him. After his start in 2018, there was an article talking about how the best of Kepler is still yet to come. The approach and peripherals all seem to be there, and he can be pretty good in something that's a bit more than a hot week. I think we are souring on him a bit too fast. In my opinion, he deserves patience for 2019 and probably 2020. His platoon splits are also odd. It would be one thing if one side consistently beats him down, but that's not the case. He's still learning. Side note, but if Buxton's absense suddely improved Kepler's value, then I stand by my assumption that defensive metrics remain trash. Kepler suddenly doesn't become a better OF simply b/c Buxton is in AAA/DL.
  8. They need a bat there. The team's failing this year was mostly on offense, a year prior to being one of the better offensive teams in baseball. I have no problems plugging Austin in and seeing if he can drop that K rate over time, but I think the team needs a big bopper. I'm on record saynig to get Nelson Cruz. I still would. I'd probably go out and get Escobar too, which between him, Garver, and Cave, could probably give Austin days off against tough righties. I'd still want another 2B and CF though.
  9. Wonder what it would take. Do you think they'd do a straight up trade for Pineda or perhaps one of our young AAA guys?
  10. If I remember right, Polanco graded out around average last year at SS. So perhaps there's some rust in that 80 game sample size? I don't know. I'm not one to trust defensive metrics anyways, and I know I'm not the only one there. That said, they need someone. Gordon isn't ready, and I think it would be foolish to hand him the reigns next season. So either they get someone on a 2 year deal or go big for one who will remain nameless. I suppose they could let Escobar start and move him back into that role, though I think at this point I consider signing Escobar into a super utility role and getting someone else that play 2b/ss.
  11. I'm really curious if the Twins plan on trading some of that depth this offseason. They honestly have too much AAA SPs right now and not enough slots to go around. Makes sense to trade some of them before they are out of options.
  12. I really don't have problems with any of these guys. Both have spent plenty of time outside the org.
  13. Problem with the DR is that both things like this (as well as Sano paying the guy off) are quite possible. It's sadly much more common than we would like to admit in central America. The police are not paid well. That said, the one thing that sticks out to me is that the guy with the broken leg knew Sano. I thought the report said they grew up together. To me, that changes a lot of the dynamics of the situation. I suppose people will believe what they want to believe, but absent any additional information, this looks like an unfortunate accident.
  14. yeah, there's some impressive "telephone" theatrics here if the update report is true. I'm not quite sure how it can go from an accident like that to gunshots and violence. Heck, it wasn't even Randy Moss/meter maid bad. Just an accident.
  15. Fortunately, this sounds like a genuine accident. Not nearly as nefarious as it was first implied. Though goodness, driving without an ID and license plate? Sano needs to start making some better choices.
  16. guessing that means we shouldnt' plan on Sano doing anything next season.
  17. I'd be fine with Nelson Cruz for DH... He may be aging, but he's aged quite well.
  18. yeah, the guy is a Twins fan... But that said, I do know I'll be pleased. You all do a great job on the handbook.
  19. I'm guessing 27 is still the make or break year, even though some guys break out after that.
  20. any chance you could get John Sickles to write up a guest piece on the minor league system to go with Seth's analysis?
  21. He found an out. He's training for the Olympics under some sort of military/athlete program and essentially is using his service time in the minors.
  22. this, I wouldn't write off Kepler just yet. The approach is legit. The results so far have not been. He doesn't seem to make enough good contact. I suspect if he continues on this path, the results will follow... perhaps he should spend some time with AK's dad... and Kepler has shown enough flashes to indicate that he could be much better than a complimentary piece.
  23. To borrow from RiverBrian, the key here is flexibility. I do think the team can compete if Buxton and Sano don't do well... as long as we aren't talking historically bad and a manager that keeps playing them... but I think flexibility is the answer. A guy like Escobar can effectively mitigate against a Sano disaster (assuming the get a 2B as well), and I think Kepler and Cave can to an extent mitigate against a Buxton disaster to some extent (though personally, I'm firmly in the start Buxton in AAA and get a guy on a 1 year make good deal to man an OF position).
  24. I believe Sano is out of options, so there's no starting him in AAA. Buxton, on the other hand, has one... and I'd probably start him in AAA. I agree that signing Escobar makes a ton of sense. Only real issue is that we would need 2B insurance if Escobar takes over for Sano.
