  1. The problem with this argument is that there was no way money wasn't going to be spent on 1B/DH this offseason. We have one guy on the 25 man that can fill one of those roles, and it's pretty obvious from this thread that not everyone is confident he can fill one of them well. Money was going to be spent at 1B/DH. I'm guessing they were planning on spending a lot more until Cron fell into their lap. As I said, this is a great pickup (assuming of course those funds saved are allocated elsewhere).
  2. Possibly. The gap between those two for 2018 wasn't that much (roughly 50 points in OPS)… and Cruz is a DH only, 38, requires a multi-year commitment, and trending in the wrong direction. Cron is 28, plays 1B with slightly above average defense, requires no commitment if he's cut and is year to year if not, and is trending in the right direction. I don't think the odds of this happening are as high as one might think. If a move like this frees up some cash to be spent elsewhere, without costing a prospect, then I think this was a really smart move. I was a Cruz guy, but I also would have traded a guy like Slegers or Stewart to get someone like Cron. I said as much in several threads. The league undervalues those guys right now, and as it happens, we need a couple. We needed a 1B and a DH. I agree with Brian that Austin should get the shot (he looked the part), but that still leaves an opening and Cron can fit that nicely. Only real thing I hope to see is some sort of move that brings in a decent LH bat that can play some 1B along with other positions. Cron hits righties OK, but both Cron and Austin are far superior against lefties.
  3. I don't know. We needed a DH. He had an .816 OPS this season and hit 30 home runs. The BA is a bit lower than one would like, but for the price and his age, he may be a bargain. There are a lot of worse pickups out there.
  4. Molitor had a bad tendency to rely on one or two arms. Reed was one, and he was effective for a while. Once Hildy got hot, he was the guy... until he got cold. I think the Twins need to get an arm for the pen, but I'm really hoping Rocco is smart enough to make sure he's not overusing one or two guys.
  5. I suspect AZ wants prospects though too. I think taking Grienke and Goldschmidt would do it... but I think we're still chipping in some guys. I'd add that if the team is sold on Rooker/Weil, then perhaps 1 year of Goldschmidt is the right answer.
  6. I doubt they get that much... He's on a 1 year deal. He's definitely a pretty nice upgrade at 1B, but he's a 1B/DH type. My guess would be one of our AAA pitchers and a lotto type in the low minors.
  7. This is the kind of thing that I'm glad we are starting to see. May end up being nothing, but if the Twins are pretty convinced Anderson won't be that pen guy we want, then get something for him.
  8. perhaps... but it wasn't like that one surprised the pundits. Most mocks had him going in the top 10.
  9. First thing I thought of when I read this piece was the material you could use for the whine line...
  10. I like the outside the box mentality. The team needed to take some more risks. The flip side is that they are taking more risks and some may backfire... who knows. But given the risk averse nature of the org, this is a welcome sight.
  11. Honestly, Donaldson AND Cruz makes a ton of sense. That means one of Sano, Cruz, Donaldson, and Austin are on the bench every day giving Rocco some options with platoons and what not. It also gives felxibility during the inevitable 15 day DL stint and adds some serious punch to lineup that was lacking it last year. I think a little protection for Sano, Buxton, Rosario, and Kepler can go a long way too.
  12. Brian said it well... but yeah, both. There's an open opportunity with Cleveland likely considering the rebuild route. Winning the division could be very easy. If they go all in and spend 50M, they should have a contender if Sano and Buxton regress positively and could be a deep contender if one or both really puts it together. It won't take a lot of players for a legit team. Donaldson or possibly Cruz, Gonzalez, a 2B and a solid RP. They have excess AAA pitching they can use to acquire some of that too or perhaps they use some of that excess pitching and excess salary to offload an Odorizzi for a Grienke. I think spending some money is a smart move too, especially if Cleveland throws in the towel.
  13. yeah, this is an area where I think they should spend big for at least one person. If the guy can play some 3rd, even better. I really think a guy like Donaldson makes a ton of sense here. He wont' be cheap though. If they want to go cheaper, a 1 year stop gap at 2nd or CF makes a ton of sense. That's where I would bargain shop. They can revisit 2B next season depending on how Gordon, Arraez, Lewis, and Javier do. At CF, that would force Buxton to earn a role with the team. I'm not sure if Marwin Gonazalez will qualify as cheap, but I'd probably go hard after him in addition to whatever else they do. He can play all over the diamond, making it easier to adjust when things (inevitably) go wrong.
  14. With the exception of LoMo, most of the guys they spent money on lived up to their expectations. It was Sano, Buxton, Santana, Dozier, and Polanco that sunk the team.
  15. For what it's worth, I had the privilege at being at the lowest attended game in Ray's history against the Twins in 2017 less than a week before Irma hit.
  16. Consider his play before the injuries was poor, I'm not so certain you can simply blame it on them. I think Twins fans shouldn't give up on the guy, but I think there's very real reason for concern. He's shown in 3 years that he cannot hit MLB pitching with any kind of consistency minus a 2 month window in 2017. I know we all want to see the 2nd half of 2017 Byron. That would be huge for this team. But committing 50M? I'm not so certain. Planning on him for 2019? I'm even less certain.
  17. Buxton's floor is a repeat of 2018. There's nothing about that which screams solid regular.
  18. I don't think anyone has given up on Buxton just yet (and fortunately, I don't think the Twins can afford to give up on him)... I'm not, however, certain that handing him a multi-year deal is wise (unless it's incredibly team friendly). I'm also not convinced he should be starting 2019 in the majors, and I don't think handing him a job in 2019 is wise either. Likewise, I think it would be very wise to have a contingency plan in place here. I'm far more worried about Buxton's future than Sano's right now.
  19. At that point, you can let your "starter" stay out another inning or two.
  20. There are plenty of guys that did well in their debuts that went on to not have a MLB career. And there are plenty of guys who did poorly in the MLB debut that went on to have a good career. Not trashing Stewart per se, but I think we need more than a 30 IP sample size to come to any reasonable conclusion on any of them.
  21. Extending Buxton... that's a bit of a risk. I think you're right though in that we need to lock up some of the core guys. Rosario should be on the list. After this season, I'm not sure what to think of Buxton and Sano. Guess you have to be a big believer in them both to do it. Not sure I'm there yet. Love the plan.
  22. I just threw said "something" at my monitor... now I have a broken glass, a broken monitor, and scotch all over my desk.
