  1. Nick, You and I have different opinions on what constitutes no risk.
  2. I think they'd be smart to get a guy on a 2-3 year deal. Big mistake they made last year pouncing on that was apparently the one year deals that brought in some salty players.
  3. I think you're right about that. Wouldn't be surprised if we saw one more RP signing that pushed us mildly north of that number... That said, I have a right to not like that. Given Cleveland taking a step back, there's no reason not to have gone out and fix the pen at least. I can understand being hesitant in the SP market given our situation, but giving Rocco a few good options in the back of the pen should have been a priority.
  4. I think Holland would make some sense here too for what it's worth. I'm not sure going after a starter makes sense, but they could still pick up a pretty good relief arm.
  5. yeah, I'd extend Rosie and woudlnt' think twice about it. I'd consider Kepler as well if the team really believes in him. He could be a bargain this time next year if they do, and both contracts should be tradeable should AK force his way into MN.
  6. for what it's worth, a large portion of the development guys have been replaced.
  7. This is somewhat misleading. They have arbitration rights that they will most certainly exercise to a number of contracts past that date.
  8. To be fair, we don't know what was addressed 3 years ago. I doubt the development people simply ignored them. Whether they targeted the right things is certainly fair to ask... On the flip side, most of these guys are gone now... so I think we have to cut the new guys some slack in that they get what they've inherited.... Also, we forget that Gonsalves was a 4th round pick. There are definitely reasons for his fall to that outside of issues such as potential, but those picks generally indicate that there are more question marks needing addressing and that he is less of a sure thing. I don't have too much of an issue with the Twins measured approach with him. He got results, but we all saw the BB peripheral in particular and knew full well that patient ML hitters will exploit that... and it reared it's ugly head at the ML level. I suspect he will spend some time in Minnesota this summer... and yes, I hope the FO has some good plans to fix him.
  9. I know the sentiment here is negative, but A LOT went wrong last year.... I think 84 is a reasonable target with some regression to the mean with Sano and Buxton in particular. They've upgraded Dozier for Schoope, upgraded Morrison for Cruz, and upgraded some of the weaker slots in the pen with Parker. If I were a betting man, I'd wager on the over for this one, especially if they go out and get another RP.
  10. I think this is more reputation based and the fact that defensive stats penalize him when Buxton is on the field. He's got + range, though he does make the occasional bone headed throw... His bat has more than made up for it. You're right though, if Kirilloff progresses similarly in 2019 than he did in 2018, I don't see a scenario where he's not the starting RF in 2020. And that means Rosario, Cave, or Kepler is traded/non-tendered. If all are doing well, someone will get a nice return, as all of them can play CF.
  11. It sounds like the new analytic is figuring out the correlation on which FA pitchers are more likely to live up to those contracts and target them...
  12. I think you can safely slot one of those names into the 7th spot. I don't think Romero should be on your list either. He's a starter, and probably the first guy called up when the inevitable injury happens. With that in mind, I'd say that Moya gets Romero's spot and Hildy moves into the 7th spot. Definitely would like one more FA signing for that 1st spot. That would mean we went north with a much better pen in 2019 than 2018. It will be interesting to see who closes.
  13. Impatience... if you want my honest opinion... that and over value of relievers. I get that RPs are being seen as more important, but you still don't move a starter that is likely going to be much better than average into that role. You move a failed starter into that role.
  14. While I don't necessarily disagree with your premise, it seems as though a very large percentage of professional athletes have this very problem... He was handed that check at 18. Hopefully, he got some smart and honest people around him to help him manage that. Then again, teenagers aren't known to be the best decision makers. How many of us can raise our hands and say we were great at that when we were that age? Besides, the issue in question is guaranteeing more millions vs taking the risk of potentially not making many more millions due to injury/ineffectiveness. Whether he's been smart with his money or not, he probably wants more of it, just like any of us would. I've got to agree with Nick on this. If the money is right, hard feelings aside, he'd be wise to sign. I'm not 100% sure the team will offer him an extension, and given his value right now, I doubt the money will be right... but if it is, he will sign.
  15. Possibly... but given his injury history, that may not necessarily be the wisest choice.
  16. both of these guys would be wise to say no... not saying I wouldn't ask, but they will so no. Now if they have their breakout seasons, that may be different.
  17. Yeah, I'm a bit perplexed why people justify Hrbek in 1982 as a reason to rush guys. It was a completely different era back then. Both pitching and hitting have evolved significantly.
  18. When healthy, he's been lights out while being very young for his league. I haven't seen him pitch, but I have a tough time believing he couldn't be a very good major league pitcher. He's one of the guys I expect to see in the rotation at some point this year, and I think he's one of those guys who may stay when he gets there.
  19. I'd prefer they be cutting their teeth at the ML level when they've actually been setup to succeed. Rooker, Kirilloff, and Lewis are all great prospects. But they also all have stuff to learn in the minors and there's no value in setting them up to fail at the ML level while their service time continues to count. Buxton had (up until 2018) just under 500 at bats in AA and AAA along with some putrid numbers in MLB... I don't care what his OPS was. He wasn't ready, and I'm not sure he's ready now. You're right that the Twins need to have a plan... and I think they do.
  20. I'm confused about this. The ownership just out bid a WS contender and another potential playoff team for one of the best pure bats on the market and you'd rather them not and push towards a rebuild?
  21. So what exactly? Give them a scholarship? Have we not learned anything from Buxton's success in the majors?
  22. I have a real tough time believing this is true. The 2018 payroll would be your best example of this, and it was still a below average payroll for a team that has the resources to spend more. None of the guys you bring up are even ready for the bigs. Rooker is the closest, and will likely be forcing the issue at some point in 2019, but that doesn't mean hand him the spot. As others have noted, that destroys depth. Let Rooker earn it (same with Lewis and AK for that matter). We don't need a repeat of Hicks, Buxton, Gomez, etc.
  23. This move might affect their draft order. On the flip side, it's a move where they can get a prospect if it doesn't move the needle enough. There's a good solid core of young players here now. You have to put talent around them. Expecting them all to do well immediately is a recipe for a never ending rebuild. This was a great move for a team in their spot. They get a guy that can help, and if the 2019 follows a similar path to 2018, they can flip him and get some talent for him.
