    There is a pattern here, and it goes back further than 2011. You'll find the same trends in 2005 and 2007 when the Twins were not competetive - the team goes in the tank. But you have to look at the other side, too. When the team has been good and smelled a possible postseason, they have been very, very good. Check out the streaks that some of those Twins teams went on in the second half. It's impressive. Personally, I am OK with putting some of that at Gardy's feet, both the good and the bad. It's been a little too consistent to be just chance, IMHO.

    First - nice job Jesse. You're killing it lately. Of all the moves that Bill Smith messed up, I gotta say, this is the one that I probably went most ballistic over at the time it happened. D Young-Garza I understood, because I wanted that right-handed power bat. Santana I could forgive, because it was clear the offers the Twins wanted weren't there. Even trading away JJ Hardy was forgivable because I trusted the scouting department on Nishioka. (Oops.) But from the moment this contract was signed, I couldn't believe it. And I wasn't alone - the blogosphere hated it. And I liked Blackburn. But this deal never, ever, made any kind of sense.

    Quick questions: 1. In the heat map, is it from the view of the batter or the pitcher? It seems it must be the batter if he left side are pitches he can pull. Is that right? 2. In the spray chart, wouldn't the "new" one be like most MLB hitters? It's fairly common that the pull side is where most hits happen, right, since that's where the ball is hit the hardest? Thanks.

    A question for the more sabrmetric set - does age really matter much for pitchers? Does it matter much is a guy debuts in MLB as a 24-year-old or a 26-year-old if he's a pitcher? An studies on this?

    The Twins are wrapping up a stretch of 30 games which was the easiest stretch they'll get this year. They played all below .500 teams except for the Indians in that time. And they still didnt go on a hot streak, or not much of one. When was the last time they were within a half dozen games of .500? It hasn't been a dismal season, but they're still going to need to finish well to avoid a 90 loss season. And that seems about right to me - better than the reall ad teams, but not remotely a contender right now.

You can click into any of them and comment just like you would on a story (by hitting reply or scrolling down to the end of the story.) 5. HOWEVER, you can also start your own topic. In the upper left-hand corner you’ll see a blue box that says “+ Post New Thread”. If you click on it, it will open an area much like a blog,, but it’s put into the forum where a lot of people hang out. (About 40% of all our traffic is just in these forums.) Add a title, and your thoughts and click on “Submit New Thread.” You’ll then see your topic in that forum. 6. One final tip.     One thing that might be interesting to limit the bidding would be his position. The Dodgers have Adrian Gonzalez, so they likely aren't going to the mat. Tigers are full up too. Red Sox have Ortiz, but is Napoli only 1 year? I forget. Yankees have Texeira but DH is open unless someone like ARod needs to move there. Ankles have Pujols but could DH. Tex and TOR seem likely to be aggressive. I will say this - a few years ago, the Twins decided that International players were a market inefficiency and that they would be aggressive. I don't know if that has changed w Ryan, but it could still be there, hidden.

    I think there is almost no chance that Gardenhire is fired this year. I'm not sure the record is that important - Ryan knows what he stuck Gardy and his staff with this year. But he didn't implode, nor did the team. I've always thought the attention towards Gardy possibly being dismissed was overstated. Ryan has shown he has plenty of patience if he believes in someone.

    Well, I don't think this is outlandish or cynical. I'm not even sure that I necessarily disagree with it. I do feel like Diamond and Worley are better than we've seen. I haven't broke down the list, but I would like to see the Twins go after one top of the rotation arm. That would provide a solid base and let the rest sort out who should be the middle of the rotation arms, but leave room for May or Meyer too. But I got to say - I think the chances of that happening are slim. There certainly is no precedent for that kind of move.

    I've been wondering if the optimism surrounding Santana was misplaced. This helps me be a lot more optimistic.

    I don't know how old you guys are, but these down seasons aren't exactly a rarity to this franchise. Most of the 70s and early 80s were tough. The 90s, after 1992, were brutal. At that time, the only choice when you had a bad team was to basically tune them out. There really wasn't a way to look to the future, because it wasn't like there was any coverage of the minor leagues. As tough as it has been, it's a hell of a lot better than it used to be.

    Really interesting analysis. It's very heartening to see these trends appear when you look further into the numbers. I'll admit - prior to reading this, I didn't have a lot of hope for Santana.

    In terms of pure money, I think BlairPaul's are more likely. I'd like an additional option year if I was the Twins, either the $6M year or one more at the end. But that seems to be a middle ground. From Cot's, here was Longoria's contract for comparison: But to me, the more interesting question is how early the Twins should commit guaranteed money to a 20yo kid who recently told his manager that he would do whatever the hell he wanted. Are you hurting Sano's development by giving him too much too soon if he has that kind of attitude? From what little I know about him, I don't think I'd commit that much money that soon. The kid already has $3M in his pockets and has been a prodigy since he was in his early teens. I want him at least a little hungry.
