  1. My copy of the thread has only 8 players. I realize winning breeds confidence, but spotting them a CF might be overplaying our hand!
  2. The fact is Dozier is the biggest bat flipper on the team. But he does it with a grin!
  3. . I was not in favor of signing Suzuki from the very beginning. There might be no bigger Suzuki disliker (is that a word) than I! And your analysis that Mauer is still a superior catcher is likely very accurate. But the scenario where Mauer returns to catching, and meh, if he gets concussed again we can just collect the insurance, is at best unconscionable. One could hypothesize, and suggest if Mauer's health was of that import, he should just retire. Or the Twins should release him and pay his salary. Neither are going to happen. A deal is a deal. And a bad deal, is still a deal!
  4. I don't think the "losing streak" is the problem. The problem is the Twins are running out of losing teams to play, and are going to have to start playing with the big boys. You can squeak by with some overachieving #3 and 4 starters for awhile, with a great BP, and a decent offense. But the bull pen is not great and there is no offense. This offensive (and I use the word in both definitions) offense is the Rubics Cube of baseball. No matter where you move someone, you create another issue. But unlike the Rubics Cube, there is no definitive result.
  5. Polanco might have two problems. His arm strength and Dozier. Many look at him as a second baseman. Also, I want defense to be the determining factor at that position, not hitting. Both are great of course, but I don't want to appear greedy!
  6. Buxton is like a new car, motorcycle, boat, house, or job you have dreamed of having. From the day you acquired the "object", it's interest and intrigue have diminished. Familialarity does not have to breed contempt, it can just breed more familiarity! Buxton, like Mauer will never again have the value to the salivating Twins fan as he did before yesterday. His warts, and he will have some, will be exposed. The same instant media presence which adjudged him to be the second coming of a biblical icon, will be the same instant media which will point out his failures! (Instantly) Social medias effect on how we are viewed causes decisions and judgements to be short term based. Taking the long view is sadly a forgotten trait. Very sadly!
  7. First of all Mauer likely preceded much of the social media hype available now. And second if being the only catcher in history to win three batting titles, and the only AL one plus being an excellent defensive catcher is not making it, what is? Mauers biggest mistake was hitting all those home runs one year in the Dome Box. That fluke year made him a lot of money, but raised the bar to an unrealistic level for any catcher. For roughly ten years he was the gold standard for MLB catchers. That would make him a success!
  8. I remember Eddie Banes. But memory tells me his was based almost more on the need to sell tickets, and hype the team than ability for abilities sake. Anyone who thinks Buxton, or Sano, or Berrios, or any of the young guys is going to be a savior will be disappointed this year. This team has too many flaws, compounded with some very odd, and difficult roster decisions to make. They should just keep moving forward, filtering in prospects, making intelligent trades, and preparing for the future. If the playoffs fall into their lap, yippee! If not, so be it.
  9. Arcia is very young. In all likelihood the "mental aspect of hitting" light will go on some day. When it does, I hope it is here. Or he will join another in an increasingly long list of players who people preface the story with "former Twin"! Given a choice between Arcia, Vargas, and Plouffe, eventually it would be Arcia. He has elite power, and in the past has hit for average. As for Plouffe, he is a very respectable third baseman. Is Sano going to come up and play as well as Plouffe does now? NO! And neither did Plouffe at that age. But as one poster mentioned, Sano is likely a generational player. Sano is actually not Plouffes problem, Mauer is. In a normal situation Plouffe would move to first. But the Mauer problem appears unsolvable. You want more out of the DH spot than he now seems capable of. And I don't think it's coming back. I am a big Mauer fan, but the concussion and catching aging seems to have taken its toll. So unless something unforeseen happens it leaves Plouffe as the odd man out.
  10. I have wondered about this, and the consistent lack of power hitters in the orginisation. I know it sounds like a conspiracy theory, but it's such a team trademark. No team purposely coaches pitchers not to strike out hitters, but we very rarely have a SO style pitcher.
  11. One thought. As long as Plouffe and Mauer are here, where will Sano play. I doubt that they will DH him. I would love to see him up here, but he needs to play defense and they won't DH Plouffe and play Sano at third. Mauer is getting what, 23 mil with a no trade contract. He is not going anywhere. The Twins have some very big roster decisions to make. And their history of loyalty to veteran players does not make it any easier.
  12. I would go with the almost always successful "I wasn't parked there" defense!
  13. But you read it two hours earlier! (Please don't reply, this could go on forever.)
  14. Would George be there to congratulate Shafer?
  15. Actually I have found it works best when my wife and my GF don't speak to each other, or for that matter know each other.
  16. Is it possible that not not only the umpires biase against our lads, but also the radar guns. Whenever our boys are pitching the gun refuses to register over 93!
  17. I had no idea your standards were so high!
  18. Not true! You should have known about this two hours ago,
  19. I liked your point about The differences in Vargas' stats depending on his spot in the batting order. I am a firm believer that numbers will not necessarily replicate themselves in any spot in the order. It's why I would not move Dozier to 3or 4.
  20. I would not lead off with BB. The mistake with Hicks was maybe not bringing him up too early, but putting him at the top of the order. Order spots do things to players. Dozier has not excelled in the middle of the order. And Torii did not do that well in the 4 hole. It causes expectations they try and fill. Which makes them overextend themselves. No one out here in typing land will ever know if Mauer INSISTS on hitting 3, or if he keeps getting slotted there for a perceived lack of a better option. Either way, it has likely impacted his career negatively.
  21. Things have changed for the better. Gardy had grown stale to the players. Molitor has infused some energy. I still dislike the Hunter signing, but he has injected a little life in a staid bunch. But I still think it was a mistake long term. And I say long term because if you don't think the Twins will extend him, you have not been watching the Twins. I am a little puzzled about why the team (FO) thought they had a winner? Adding a 40 yr old OF and a middle aged, mid level pitcher does not exactly over haul a team with the recent record this one has had.
  22. You took the words right out of my IPad! Why exactly is he starting? This outfit is always trying to make a silk purse out of a sows ear. And NO, I am not comparing Lester to a hogs audio receptical attachment.
  23. Thanks Nick. It takes a lot of guts by the GM of a 4 year 90+ losing team, to admit that his "little engine that could", won't! That the team played with a golden horse shoe in its pocket for several weeks, played losing teams, and now it's regressing to the norm. SELL SELL SELL! Then, BUILD HUILD BUILD! If you invest in a 30 year old, mid level player, the fans will yawn. If you start bringing in talented youth, the fans will follow, and be patient.
  24. We can always sign a 30 yr old veteran, he can make a little run, and we can extend him for a few years! It's the Twins Way. So, the team which has been bleating for two years plus, over having the best or one of the best minor league pools of talent in all of baseball, would consider going out and buying some low control, mid level outfielder?
  25. Mike makes a valid point, but should have extended past the bench, to include the entire roster construction. It's an unmitigated mess. Long term contracts to average pitchers. No viable 3 or 4 hitter, no SS, sub par catcher, little power, low SOPIP. The only thing I can say is this is farther from a consistent winner than anyone maybe thinks. While I want an aggressive rebuild, I also accept the fact it is not going to make us a post season team. But you HAVE to start somewhere. Btw, as for Graham! Pitch em, or make a trade and send him to Rochester. You cannot just blow off a roster spot.
