  1. The only unwritten rule that counts is, if you are going to move a guy off the plate, or actually intend to plunk him for some perceived indiscretion, nothing above the waist! EVER.
  2. That is seven names that will strike fear into baseball fans, sadly they will mostly be Twins fans. Santana and Nolasco will get 40% of the starts. Then which Hughes will appear? The bad Hughes gets you to 60% of mostly hopelessness! Whoever thought we would look at Santana's exclusion from the playoffs as a good thing!
  3. TR is going to have to change his stripes drastically for any of the above to happen. There's about 6 days left in Aug, and play off rosters have to be set by then. It normally takes him a week to put a guy with a broken leg (let's wait and let the swelling go down first) on the DL!
  4. I think some of the angst for guys like Robinson, and in my case Hunter, is beyond their control. They are there and blocking better talent, so some frustration gets directed their way. As for Arcia, I have always been a fan of his. I think when he got injured, did well in Rochester, and was not called back he was getting jerked around by the FO. There is more their than we know about. It's probably time for him to be moved, since Kepler can fill all 3 OF spots, and 1B. But Oswaldo didn't just forget how to hit. He's only 24, and we will be watching him hit bombs on ESPN for years, likely in someone else's uniform.
  5. May could pitch in next years pen, until a Burdi or Jay comes up. That moves May to the rotation, and by then it will be time to move Milone out or jettison Ricky. By the way, Milone will be back, a little Burdi told me.
  6. Your point on the sales job is excellent. Too often we forget that these are not impartial announcers, they are arms of the teams sales dept. Accentuate the positives, and gloss over the negatives is their real job. Entertain when the game gets negatively out of hand, and gloat when it gets positively out of hand. And if you are a radio guy, mention a sponsor a minimum of three times an inning!
  7. You didn't have to apologize, the guest of honor at the funeral home was probably already dead when he got there. VodkaDave should be a St. Petersburg fan. I hear Vodka is the drink of choice. They even have a Family Plan. Two adults, two children : Four shots of Vodka and four slices of black bread, and a shirtless Vladimir Putin Bobblehead, all for 14,225 rubles.
  8. According to this Santana is not eligible to pitch a 163. http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2015/07/04/twinsights-ervin-santana-has-no-regrets-after-80-game-drug-suspension/
  9. Is anyone really surprised by this seeming contradiction. Ryan is not noted for aggressive decisions. I believe that's why he is so fond of mediocre veterans. While they won't get any better, they're track record is established and they won't get any worse. It's kind of like buying a Dodge Caravan. While it won't turn any heads, the odds are you won't have to get towed either!
  10. But is all seriousness they likely take a mathematical analytical view of it, which does not account for "winning ugly". And they take a long view, not the view of the last 4 games played against a team in a slumber, or the previous against a team against which all hope is lost. (At least for the Twins) When presented with the scenario that the Twins would win a game in the bottom of the 12th on two 2 base ground ball errors, Mr. Spock said to Kirk, "not logical, Captain"! (Little known fact, Spock was a huge Twins fan!)
  11. If it's "grounded in reality" what's it doing in a TD post? :)
  12. To a point I concur. And the reason is, the only thing that drives TR to movement is abject failure. It took 4 90 lose seasons to move a manager, a bullpen that was ludicrous (and some injuries) to force change, and in all likelihood an injury to bring Buxton back. The only flaw in your argument is that we are already considered successful by management as the bar was pretty low. As for the Suzuki and Hunter fans, fear not! Your jerseys will still be in vogue next year!
  13. The pick that Mauer made to end the game the other night on that god awful through by EE, was not easy. He made it look like he was picking up one of the twins. Mauer may not be a prototypical bat at first base, but his defense there is so far down the list of things the Twins need to address in the off season, Ryan would have to look down those little reading glasses of his to see it.
  14. The problem isn't how many games back, currently 2.0 per the Trib, it's that there are 4 teams in front of them. Angels, Baltimore, Texas and Tampa Bay. That means if you're going to play mediocre baseball, like 83.5 baseball, you need all 4 to also play mediocre baseball. One sneaky team going out on a hot streak, and you are toast. It doesn't mean the Twins can't/won't win the WC, it just makes the odds infinitesimally smaller!
  15. Assuming you are in the basement, have you went upstairs to check if your wife is even there? I would swear I saw her with a Nigerian Prince at Wal Mart yesterday!
  16. Will you take a personal check?
  17. Which in a nutshell is what the Twins choice was this year. They could lose with veterans, or they could lose while giving acclimation time to rookies. The month of May seems to have caused them to be somewhere in between!
  18. Well written article, but if you want any responses you should throw in something about Mauer going back to catching! All sarcasm aside, my contention all along is that this season should have been a year long try out camp. But instead we spent a lot of it playing pretender. That's the puzzle that is Terry Ryan. He seems to understand that this was not a playoff team, see the trade deadline. Then he doesn't, see Torri Hunter and your comments on the pen. Would Buxton assuredly, or even Hicks be up without injuries to Shafer, and in Buxtons case, Hicks? To touch on Dozier, and the following will be more unpopular than snow in June, should we look at trading him for a catcher? He is a good ball player, which you will have to trade to get a good catcher. But I really do not see him keeping his power numbers. Mostly because his power in not natural, there won't be any opposite field HR's. Polanco seems a offensive second baseman, not a SS. So we have some replacement options there, but not behind the plate.
  19. I think it's tricky how they let you drive into those tunnels in Baltimore, and then when you get out on the other end, they tell you that you have to pay! If I had known that I would have used the bridge instead!
  20. The family situation is exactly why I asked. I have wondered about it for awhile. I am of mixed thoughts. I understand the philosophy of a happy bench guy, but we may have a few too many. As far as if they are keeping him because he needs insurance, that's a tough one. Very very tough. If that would be the case, and Ryan has the compassion and balls to keep him the last few months for that reason, he gets a pass from me. The playing time issue I would still argue, the roster spot I would not.
  21. Interesting tale of the Twins/Yankees heated rivalry from Joe Posnanski. I would suggest you either read it at least two hours after you eat, to allow your food to properly settle, or else with a good bottle of something in excess of 80 Proof. http://joeposnanski.com/the-yankees-twins-follies/
  22. Playing time from Hicks and Rosario? You obviously meant playing time from Hunter?
  23. If Robinson were demoted to Rochester, does his salary and benefits, (I assume MLB has health insurance benefits go with him)?
  24. Bringing up Buxton would require removing a bench player. Robinson, Nunez, or Escobar. We don't move bench players. Only pitchers and catchers!
